- As tasty as it might look, you should refrain from licking the Sonoran desert toad, the National Park Service has warned. On Tuesday, the NPS used Facebook to warn passerby to use caution around the Sonoran desert toad, also known as the Colorado river toad. The amphibian is one of the largest toads found in north America, measuring up to 7 inches, according to the Facebook post. The toad’s call is a distinctive “low-pitched toot,” says the NPS. The toad’s toxins are particularly dangerous for other animals. But among humans, the toxins have been exploited towards other ends. When smoked, the toxins are a powerful psychedelic, according to the Oakland Zoo, also accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Smoking the Sonoran desert toad’s secretions causes euphoria and strong auditory hallucinations, says the Oakland Zoo. Possessing the toad’s poison, known as bufotenin, is illegal in California, according to the zoo.
- Former US president Donald Trump suggested on Monday he would mount a 2024 presidential run as soon as next week, saying at a political rally in Ohio on Monday he would make a “big announcement” on November 15th. “I’m going to be making a very big announcement on Tuesday, November 15th at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida,” Mr Trump told supporters at a rally for Republican US Senate candidate J.D. Vance ahead of the midterm elections. The former president declined to elaborate, saying he did not want to “detract very important, even critical election”.
- More than 25 countries at the COP27 climate talks launched a group they said would ensure they hold each other accountable for a pledge to end deforestation by 2030 and announced billions of dollars to finance their efforts.
- The Indian Parliamentarian from Rewa district in Madhya Pradesh state, Janardan Mishra, has raised many eyebrows with his unusual tips for water conservation. Speaking during a water conservation workshop, the politician stated that since water has become scarce in some places, efforts must be taken to prevent unnecessary usage. But he went on to add: “… Drink alcohol, chew tobacco, smoke weed or smell thinner and solution but understand the importance of water.” “Instead of lecturing people, use cloud seeding technology like Dubai to solve the water problem,” a Twitter user wrote.
- The last total lunar eclipse or the rare spectacle of the Beaver Blood Moon will be witnessed today by nighttime skywatchers from East Asia to North America. It will be visible to the naked eye in clear skies, weather permitting, as the Earth, moon and sun align to produce a total lunar eclipse for the last time until 2025.
- British businesses fear a gloomy Christmas, as almost half of households plan to cut festive spending due to the soaring cost of living and sales are already falling sharply in inflation-adjusted terms. UK grocery inflation hit 14.7% in October, another new record, and it is still too early to call the ceiling, market researcher Kantar said.
- A £25 million party boat which is set to sail up and down the River Thames with as many as 1,500 passengers is facing opposition from locals concerned about events on it going on into the early hours every night of the week. Luxury superyacht Oceandiva is set to host high-end conferences and soirées from Spring next year, and promises to be a ‘revolutionary’ net-zero events space. Owners Oceandiva London have submitted a planning application to operate the vessel Monday to Sunday between 11am and 2am the next day.
- A lengthy rock tunnel has been discovered beneath the ancient Taposiris Magna Temple located in the vicinity of Alexandria in Egypt. The tunnel, which runs for about 1,305 meters some 13 meters below the ground and which is about two meters high, was found by the Dominican-Egyptian archaeological mission of the University of San Domingo headed by Dr. Kathleen Martinez, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said in a statement. The design of the newly discovered tunnel appears to resemble that of the “Greece’s Jubilinos Tunnel,” the statement said. The tunnel is partially flooded with seawater, which seems to lend further credence to the theory that part of the foundation of the Taposiris Magna Temple is also underwater.
- Norwegian Princess Martha Louise, daughter of King Harald and fourth in line to the throne of Norway, has announced that she is going to distance herself from royal duties. Earlier this year, Martha Louise became engaged to a self-styled shaman and healer from United States named Durek Verrett, and the princess’ recent decision regarding her duties for the royal household appears to be related regarding her and her “fiance’s role”.
- On Monday, Twitter owner and CEO Elon Musk endorsed the GOP for the midterm election and urged American netizens to vote Republican. The US left-leaning mainstream press immediately accused Musk of being irresponsible, demonstrating political bias and influencing his 100 million-plus followers. Still, there is nothing new under the sun: previously, Silicon Valley giants routinely came under criticism from the GOP for silencing conservative voices, tagging and labeling the Republican president’s tweets. Just three weeks before the 2020 elections, Facebook’s* Mark Zuckerberg and Twitter’s Jack Dorsey had no scruples about limiting circulation or altogether banning the New York Post’s bombshell concerning an infamous laptop of Hunter Biden, the son of then-Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden.
- Sven Gunnar Brostrom, an archaeologist and petroglyph hunter, found the carvings which were hidden from the outside world under a blanket of earth and stone. He said finding petroglyphs like this is something one dreams about. Brostom believes this area was located at the shoreline during the Bronze Age wherein boats and canoes were the primary means of transportation. The petroglyphs of about 60 ships stand out as it dates back 3,000 years to the Bronze-Age. The rock carvings are unusually numerous and deep. There are about 100 figures carved on an arable hill south of the town of Enkoping. The carvings are believed to have been done at a time when the sea level reached here. Petroglyhs have been found in various civilizations from Egyptians and Mayans to the Vikings and Aborigines, throughout the world. Archaeologists regard this as a global phenomenon that spans thousands of years, divergent cultures and entire continents.
