- One rare dialect less as the world’s last speaker of Bering dialect of Aleut language passes away. Vera Timoshenko, 93, died on her native Bering island off the Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Pacific. Vera Timoshenko spent all her lift in her native Nikolskoye village on Bering island, the largest in the Commander islands grouping with a population of 690 people – 333 of them are Aleuts. A ‘treasure trove of Aleut folklore, national songs, dances and history’, Vera was the last person to preserve Bering dialect of the language unique to her remote island. Until her last days, she stayed in close contact with Russian and foreign specialists to pass the knowledge of the Aleut language and culture. She translated novels and poems and tried her hardest to pass the language to her own children and other youngsters around her. But despite her efforts she was the last active speaker of the dialect.
- By all accounts, Ivan Safronov was set for a stellar career at the heart of Moscow’s political establishment. Aged 30, he’d left a prestigious journalistic role to become an aide to the head of Roscosmos, Russia’s answer to NASA. That changed dramatically in July last year, when he was arrested by agents from the FSB, the country’s top domestic security agency, and charged with treason. In a statement, officials said that he was suspected of passing state secrets to spooks from a NATO nation. On Tuesday last, a Moscow court extended his arrest, meaning he will languish behind bars until at least May, while prosecutors prepare the case against him. Safronov’s lawyer, Ivan Pavlov, revealed after his arrest that, in files shared by investigators, “the Czech Republic is the state that is mentioned as receiving classified information,” allegedly transferred over the internet. “Prosecutors believe that the US has become the ultimate recipient,” the advocate added. His client continues to maintain his innocence.

Douglass used two flight tracking websites, Flightradar24 and Flight Aware, to determine that the exact position of the plane was “over the northeast corner of New Mexico west of Clayton, New Mexico” at an altitude of 37,000 feet. Following a debrief with the flight crew, American Airlines confirmed that the radio transmission came from flight 2292. The FAA released a short statement: “A pilot reported seeing an object over New Mexico shortly after noon local time on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021. FAA air traffic controllers did not see any object in the area on their radarscopes.”

He attended to as many as 10,000 patients per week. Hundreds of women, including Faria’s daughter, alleged the healer regularly engaged in abuse ranging from groping to rape during private sessions.

- Asteroid Apophis – Mark your calendar: April 13, 2029. On that Friday the 13th eight years from now, asteroid 99942 Apophis, about 370 meters wide, will fly past Earth so close you can see it with your naked eye. No, it won’t hit, but you can be excused a frisson of dread watching it pass by. This weekend, Apophis made a “pre-flyby” of Earth about 16 million km away, the closest it will be before the big event in 2029. What might happen is pretty interesting. At such close range, Earth’s gravity could stretch the asteroid, change the way it spins, and trigger small avalanches. Radar observations during the hours of closest approach will be able to image the asteroid’s surface with few-meter resolution, potentially revealing the changes. Shining like a 3rd magnitude star, Apophis will be plainly visible to the naked eye from rural areas and an easy (albeit fast-moving) target for small telescopes. No one in recorded history has ever seen an asteroid in space so bright.
