  • Popular short-form video-sharing service TikTok quietly revised its privacy policy in the U.S., allowing it to automatically collect biometric information such as faceprints and voiceprints from the content its users post on the platform. The policy change, first spotted by TechCrunch, went into effect on June 2. TikTok users who reside in the European Economic Area (EEA), the U.K., Switzerland, and other geographies (excluding India) where the service operates are exempted from the changes.

  • Chris Smalling, a defender for Rome’s football club, and his wife Sam Cooke alleged in a recent Instagram “stories” post that they had seen a UFO. “We could have got it on camera when it was flying by us as it was clear to see, but we were both too gobsmacked to get our cameras out,” Cooke said in an Instagram post. She also added in another post she was one hundred percent sure the object was not a drone, as it was massive and very sophisticated, with “faint lights all around the edge”.

  • Finland’s National Police Board has criticised the Helsinki Police Department for an intelligence-gathering operation targeting the Roma (gypsy) minority. In its reprimand, the Police Board ruled the intelligence operation “problematic” and stated that such a focus on a particular societal segment is incompatible with normal policing.

  • Norwegian Institute of Public Health chief physician Preben Aavistland, one of the country’s best-known infection control experts, has sparked a national debate on whether the COVID-19 pandemic is over. “Well, there goes the pandemic”, Aavitsland tweeted, attaching a diagram of reduced hospital admissions. “Here in Norway, the pandemic is almost over. We can start preparing for an everyday life where the corona has very little place in our lives,” Aavitsland explained to Verdens Gang. Frode Forland, director of infection control at the National Institute of Public Health, ventured that Norway may return to normal life in the autumn. Mads Gilbert, the head of the emergency medicine department at the University Hospital of North Norway and professor of emergency medicine at the University of Tromsø, went so far as to accuse Aavitsland of “sabotaging” the government’s efforts.

  • The new book by Wall Street Journal reporter Michael Bender, slated for release on 10 August, is one of several seeking to offer a “postmortem” account of Donald Trump’s defeat in the presidential elections of 2020, with the author having interviewed over 150 people, including the 45th POTUS himself, as part of research for the volume. “Former Bill Clinton adviser Dick Morris, told Trump that Biden was too old and too prone to gaffes to be the nominee,” writes Bender. According to the book, at a meeting with top advisers in April 2020, Trump voiced the belief that Democratic Party officials would “realise [Biden is] old, and they’re going to give it to somebody else. They’re going to give it to Hillary, or they’re going to give it to Michelle Obama.” The author adds: “… Fox News anchor Sean Hannity expressed concern that Biden would collapse under a sustained attack from Trump.”

  • Top Facebook executive Nick Clegg has said the tech giant’s decision to uphold former US President Donald Trump’s suspension was “fair, transparent and proportionate”. In a speech to the Republican Party’s North Carolina State Convention on Saturday night, Trump said he was “not too interested” in having his Facebook account reinstated.

  • The Biden administration’s attempts to weaponise human rights against Russia may backfire on the White House, according to Dr. Paul Craig Roberts, an American economist and former assistant secretary of the Treasury for economic policy under President Ronald Reagan. “In mass violations of human rights, we have President Bill Clinton’s destruction of Serbia, George W. Bush’s destruction of Iraq, Barack Obama’s destruction of Libya and attempted destruction of Syria, Washington’s protection of Israel’s violation of Palestinians’ human rights, Washington’s bombings of Pakistan. The list goes on and on. Reformist governments in Latin America are overthrown,” he says.

  • Boanthropy is a mental disorder in which a person believes themselves to be a Bovine and attempts to live and behave accordingly. The most famous sufferer of this condition was King Nebuchadnezzar, the king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire from 605BC to 562BC. Some speculate that it is a manifestation of anxiety, depression and regression. In 1792 a vaccination for Smallpox was feared to induce this disease. ~

  • A bikini selling on Amazon’s website in Canada presumably depicting the flag of Karnataka provoked ire in the Indian state; it features the state emblem, complete with its red and yellow colours. The bikini was also available on Amazon in the United Kingdom, Japan and Mexico. The trim, two piece swimsuit, billed as “Women’s Flag of Karantaka, Original Design Slim Fit Tie Side Laces Triangle Chic Trimmer for Girls’ ” led to outrage among people in the state. Pro-Kannada organisations brought it to the notice of Kannada Culture Minister Aravind Limbavali, who swiftly announced that legal action will be taken against Amazon Canada.

  • More than 800 people have been arrested in Europe, North America and Australia as part of a massive law enforcement operation targeting gangsters who communicated using the AN0M device. AN0M allowed criminals to talk to each other on encrypted devices but it turns out the FBI had designed the device themselves and were listening in from the get-go. FBI Assistant Director Calvin Shivers told reporters at Europol’s HQ in The Netherlands: “FBI agents and local law enforcement officers were able to read the messages of underworld figures in 100 countries as they smuggled drugs, discussed arms deals and even mulled over contract killings”.

  • Lightning strikes killed 27 people and four passengers on a flight were hospitalised after severe turbulence during monsoon storms in eastern India, officials said on Tuesday (Jun 8). “Many of the 27 killed on Monday evening … in the state were farmers and working in the fields,” West Bengal disaster management minister Javed Ahmed Khan said. Nearly 2,900 people were killed by lightning in India in 2019 according to the National Crime Records Bureau – the most recent figures available. The monsoon is crucial to replenishing water supplies in South Asia, but also causes widespread death and destruction across the region each year.

  • An 80-year-old woman died after a former security guard at a Pakistani hospital posed as a doctor and performed surgery on her, police said on Monday (Jun 7). Shameema Begum died on Sunday, two weeks after Muhammad Waheed Butt attempted to treat her back wound at a public hospital in the eastern city of Lahore. “We can’t keep up with what every doctor and what everyone is doing at all times. It’s a large hospital,” explained an administrative official from Lahore’s Mayo Hospital, who did not want to be named. He said it was unclear what type of surgery the imposter had performed in the operating theatre, where a qualified technician was also present. Pakistan’s public hospitals, where patients are required to pay some money towards treatment, can often be inefficient and chaotic.

  • FBI Affidavit explaining how they ended up recovering ransomware bitcoins was released. The FBI watched the suspects try to launder the bitcoin through different addresses until the bitcoin landed on an exchange. From there, the FBI simply contacted the exchange and asked for the private key to the coins.

  • After an hour of websites and apps worldwide went dark, many are coming back online around 11:30 AM UTC. The core problem was an “issue” identified on the Fastly CDN (content delivery network) network. Popular websites such as Twitch, Pinterest, HBO Max, Hulu, Reddit, Spotify, which Fastly runs a content delivery network to push data around the internet, went down around 10 AM UTC. With so many websites relying on Fastly’s technology to act as a high-level website and application hosting service to serve millions of users, the internet breaks when their servers go down. There are many similarities between this outage and an issue with Cloudflare last year. The point here is to have the entire internet rely on a single point of failure like Fastly and Cloudflare could be something hackers may exploit.

  • Dr. Joss Reimer, medical lead for Manitoba’s Vaccine Implementation Task Force, says that new vaccine recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization on mixing mRNA vaccines will be a form of trial and error. “Well in some ways, during a pandemic everything we do is a big human experiment,” she said in an interview with CTV’s Question Period airing Sunday. “Because we’re all having to learn together at the same time, about what works the best.” On Tuesday, NACI changed its guidelines to allow for Canadians to mix and match AstraZeneca with either mRNA vaccine from Moderna or Pfizer. There was no current data on the interchangeability of mRNA vaccines. Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says NACI still recommends sticking with the same mRNA vaccine regime for both doses, but that you can mix if there are problems with availability.

  • Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei blamed President Joe Biden for the border crisis, saying that the change from Trump’s administration emboldened the human traffickers on the border, known as “coyotes.” He also called on Vice President Kamala Harris to introduce legislation to make being a coyote a federal crime. Giammattei said the change in government led to a change in message. “The message changed to ‘We are going to reunite families and we are going to reunite children,” the foreign leader told CBS News. “The very next day the coyotes here were organizing groups of children to take them to the United States.” “We asked the United States government to send more of a clear message to prevent more people from leaving,” Giammattei added. Giammattei said that he and Harris, who traveled to Guatemala on Monday, “are not on the same side of the coin. It is obvious.” “We are in agreement on the ‘what’” of the border crisis, “which is something. We are not in agreement on the ‘how.’”
