  • Shoshone land stretches from Death Valley in the Mojave Desert in eastern California to Yellowstone Park in Wyoming. But in 1951 the US started nuclear weapons testing on Western Shoshone territory, at the Nevada Proving Grounds (now known as the Nevada National Security Site). The Shoshone can now lay claim to be the most nuclear-bombed nation on the planet. Over a period of just over 40 years, there were 928 tests conducted there – around 100 in the atmosphere and more than 800 underground – resulting in nuclear fallout of around 620 kilotons, according to a 2009 study. In comparison, there were 13 kilotons of fallout when Hiroshima was bombed in 1945.

  • The image of a gray cube-shaped object on the Moon’s horizon was published by Our Space, a channel affiliated with the China National Space Administration (CNSA), early last month. The photo was taken by Chinese rover Yutu-2 when it was traversing the large Von Karman crater. It was reported at the time that it would take two to three months for the rover to reach the object. Yutu-2 landed on the Moon in 2019 as part of China’s Chang’e-4 mission. It is the first rover to explore the side of the Moon not visible from Earth.

  • Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov has ordered his government to find a way of extinguishing an apocalyptic -looking gas crater that has been burning in the Karakum desert for the past 50 years. The “feature” located near the village of Darvaza, some 270km from Turkmenistan’s capital of Ashgabat, is officially called ‘The Radiance of Karakum’, but the locals usually refer to it as ‘The Gates to Hell’. The 60-meter-wide pit is man-made, formed as the result of a ground collapse during gas exploration back in 1971. It was set on fire deliberately over fears that poisonous gas could threaten people and wildlife in the area. It was expected to burn out swiftly, but the crater is somehow still spewing flames to this day, providing for a scary phenomenon.

  • The sudden outbreak of violence in Kazakhstan has taken analysts and international observers by surprise. In the early hours of Thursday morning, the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which joins the armed forces of six former republics of the USSR, including Kazakhstan, announced that it would send a peacekeeping force to help maintain order as unrest spread across the vast Central Asian nation.

  • Wearing surgical or FFP2 masks is now mandatory for all Romanian residents older than five at both indoor and outdoor public spaces. The decision made by the National Council for Emergency Situations (CNSU) this week makes textile masks illegal in the Eastern European nation. Hefty fines of up to €500 ($567) have been introduced for those caught wearing the banned face coverings.

  • The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been ordered to hasten the publication of documents related to Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine by more than one-hundred-fold, after the agency claimed the disclosure would take decades. In a ruling on Thursday, District Judge Mark Pittman rejected previous arguments from the FDA after it said it might take decades, possibly until 2096, to complete the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Though the agency said it could only process and publish around 500 pages each month, Pittman said it would have to pick up the pace – instead ordering it to put out 55,000 pages in the same time span. “The court concludes that this FOIA request is of paramount public importance,” the judge wrote, adding that the timely completion of the release is “not only practicable, but necessary.”

  • Queen Elizabeth II could be asked to fund Prince Andrew’s potential settlement with his accuser, Virginia Giuffre, The Telegraph has reported, citing its sources. According to the newspaper, the Duke of York’s legal team has not dismissed the option of reaching an out of court settlement with the 38-year-old as recent revelations suggest that the case is likely go to trial. The payoff could exceed £5 million ($6.7 million), a sum too high for Prince Andrew’s pockets, hence the Queen could be asked to contribute, The Telegraph writes. Sources told the newspaper that any settlement would include a “no admission of fault or liability” clause as well as a non-disclosure agreement, preventing both sides from discussing the issue in public.

  • Astronomers have been monitoring the assembly process of the telescope – deemed to be one of the most complex observatories ever sent to space – since its Christmas launch last year. Tune in to a live stream from the flight control room of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, the hub of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as the observatory finalises its unfolding in space on Saturday, 8 January. The final stage of the deployment process is expected to start at 9:30 a.m. and end in a few hours, at approximately 1:30 p.m. Eastern time. After that, the observatory will start operating in full. NASA scientists are set to hold a press conference once the deployment is complete. JWST, the biggest and most powerful telescope ever launched into space, is a joint venture by NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency. It was launched to space on 25 December 2021. It took almost 20 years and $10 billion to develop the observatory. With help of JWST, scientists plan to explore the planets outside the solar system and scrutinise the early days of the universe.

  • On Thursday, SpaceX launched its first Falcon 9 rocket of the year, successfully delivering a new stack of 49 Starlink satellites into orbit from Florida and landing safely at sea. Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, said that his company has begun launching satellites equipped with “lasers” into orbit.

  • Some survivors and families of the 9/11 victims have lashed out at US Vice President Kamala Harris over her comparing the al-Qaeda terrorist attacks to last year’s Capitol riot and the 1941 bombing of Pearl Harbour. They included 61-year-old Mary Geraghty, whose husband, New York City Fire Department Battalion Chief Edward Geraghty, died during the attacks. Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said that she was “still speechless that our vice president would make that comment”. “There were terrorists that came onto American soil and slaughtered American citizens. There is absolutely no comparison. Insult is too mild a word”, Geraghty said.
