- Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that XRVision facial recognition software identified Antifa members among rioters who stormed the Capitol Wednesday. XRVision did not identify any Antifa members. The Washington Times apologizes to XRVision for the error. Facial recognition software has identified neo-Nazis and other extremists as participants in Wednesday’s assault on the U.S. Capitol. XRVision, a software firm in New York, used its image analysis to help law enforcement identify rioters. “Shortly after the rioting started, XRVision performed an analysis on the footage and identified several individuals. This information was shared with LEA [law enforcement agency],” the company said in a statement to The Washington Times.
- According to US investigative sources working here in Italy since 18 November 2020, it was the US Embassy in Rome who coordinated the data manipulation of votes cast for President Trump to Joe Biden, with the technical complicity of Leonardo SpA, a company that is 31% owned by the Italian Government and generates more than half of its multi-billion USD annual revenue from its US based subsidiary. Leonardo DRS whose chief executive officer, William Lynn III, was formerly the undersecretary of defense during the Clinton Administration. Leonardo DRS is actively pursing a public listing on the NYSE in 2021. One of the board of directors of Leondardo SpA (2017) was Professor Guido Alpa, a former law partner of Giuseppe Conte in Rome. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte in recent days had been the subject of press articles about plans to establish private intelligence agencies.
- The introduction of a bacteria that causes plague, Yersinia pestis, in Siberia thousands of years ago might have dealt a blow to the population of the region back then, Science news reports, citing a new study published in Science Advances on 6 January. The study, conducted by a team led by two evolutionary geneticists from Stockholm University, Gulşah Merve Kilinç and Anders Gotherstrom, involved the extraction of DNA from skeletal remains previously discovered in Eastern Siberia. The subsequent analysis of these samples yielded the discovery of Yersinia pestis, in two ancient denizens of Siberia; one of the infectees lived approximately 4,400 years ago, while the other was dated back to about 3,800 years ago.
- Brewdog is giving away free four-packs of their “carbon negative” beer to everyone in the UK on Friday to mark the less than positive beginning of 2021. - Solar Orbiter reached its closest approach to Venus at 7:39 a.m. EST (1239 GMT), when the spacecraft was about 4,700 miles (7,500 kilometers) from the top of the planet’s cloud tops. The probe, a partnership between NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), launched in February, bound to spend seven years studying our sun. But to get as close to our star as scientists want to, the spacecraft needs to make some loops, starting with flyby of Venus. “Solar Orbiter is of course a mission not designed specifically to take Venus observations,” Daniel Müller, project scientist for the mission at the European Space Agency, said. “We are always looking for bonus opportunities to do science, so yes, we will be doing observations when we approach Venus.”
- Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has prohibited the import of any Covid vaccines from the US and UK, questioning their efficacy and suggesting developers might be willing to “test” their drugs on foreign nations. The announcement came in a televised speech on Friday, with the Supreme Leader going as far as to suggest that London and Washington might be seeking to “contaminate” other countries with their anti-coronavirus solutions.
- The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an inquiry into Google’s plan to remove third-party cookies from its Chrome browser over fears the move will have a “significant impact” on the digital ad market. Google plans, through its ‘Privacy Sandbox’ proposals, to end support for all cookies except for those that track user activity within a company’s own site, and replace tracking tools with a system that limits and anonymises the information advertisers receive from consumers. The UK investigation will focus on how the new changes could impact advertising spending, and whether the proposed plan will increase Google’s ad market share at the expense of competitors.

Faces of ‘Siberian Tutankhamun’ and his ‘Queen’
The Arzhan-2 burial of the Scythian ‘King’ and the ‘Queen’, found in 1997 and studied between 2001-2003 by Russian-German expedition is one the most extraordinary discoveries ever made by archeologists.
Now for the first time the features of the powerful couple buried in their gold-encrusted, awe-inspiring clothing can be seen in life-like sculptures. Two teams of anthropologists spent months meticulously building 3d models of the skulls, using laser scanning and photogrammetry to then re-create the faces of the people that ruled vast sways of steppes and mountains at the time when the Great Pyramids were getting built in Egypt.
