News Burst 9 April 2024

  • [Coincidences?] The solar eclipse is not an isolated natural phenomenon that occurs on April 8, 2024. NASA and the renowned CERN “God Particle” institute have chosen April 8 as the day to conduct some unique scientific experiments. Why is CERN reactivated on April 8, the same day as the infamous eclipse? NASA launched three sounding rockets during the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, “to study how Earth’s upper atmosphere is affected when sunlight momentarily dims over part of the planet.” What happens when NASA launches a rocket during a full solar eclipse and CERN activates its particle accelerator simultaneously? The next total solar eclipse over the US is not until 2044, so these scientific experiments are a rare opportunity for scientists to collect crucial data. August 12, 2026, is the day on which the first total solar eclipse visible from Europe will occur.

  • The International Atomic Energy Agency is once again sounding the alarm over the potential that disaster could strike the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southeastern Ukraine, which is the largest in Europe. On Sunday, for the first time since 2022, Ukraine apparently sent a drone against the facility and it struck one of the plant’s six nuclear reactors. While Kiev has firmly denied it was behind the attack, Moscow has denounced it as a “very dangerous provocation” from Ukraine forces. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denounced it as “a very dangerous practice with very bad negative consequences.” He said it’s but the latest example of Kiev’s “terrorist activity.” Russian state-owned nuclear agency Rosatom reported casualties as a result of the strike, detailing that three people were wounded in the “unprecedented series of drone attacks.”

  • Israeli troops withdrew Sunday from Khan Younis, another city in southern Gaza, ending a key phase of the war. Defense officials say they’re regrouping ahead of a push into Rafah. Palestinians who visited Khan Younis on Monday say the city is now unlivable, offering them little immediate chance to return. Many have been sheltering in Rafah. The Palestinian death toll from the war has passed 33,200, with nearly 76,000 wounded, Gaza’s Health Ministry said. The ministry doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its tally, but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead.

  • Sweden’s Riksbank published the results of the fourth phase of its e-Krona central bank digital currency (CBDC). While the central bank concluded offline payments are viable, the security requirements are significant. For some types of offline payments, this impacts usability. Mobile phones are considered too insecure to be the sole offline payment device. Hence, the central bank imposed limits in the code, such as a maximum wallet amount of SEK 3,000 ($286) and no more than five consecutive offline transactions before connecting to the internet. Some of the usability issues are significant. For example, P2P payments involve users possessing both physical payment cards and mobile phones. They have to let their phones read their cards and bring their phones together twice. For a secure payment, the recipient has to perform four steps and the payer three. Decisions in late 2025.

  • Apple is laying off 614 workers in California, according to a new state filing, the company’s first significant round of job cuts since the Covid pandemic. This comes weeks after Apple canceled a long-running project to build an electric, self-driving car in a team called the Special Projects Group. While the California notice didn’t mention the specific projects where jobs are being cut, none of the locations in the filing are at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, but at smaller, satellite offices more likely to house secretive initiatives. Positions that were cut include machine shop managers, hardware engineers and product design engineers, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. An Apple representative declined to comment.

  • Apple is planning to build around 78,000 homes for its workers in India, the Economic Times reported on Monday. The project will be partially funded by the government, and will involve Indian conglomerate Tata, Taiwan-based major Foxconn, and Finnish firm Salcomp. Foxconn, one of Apple’s largest suppliers, pledged to invest $1.5 billion in the project last year, to build nearly 35,000 of the housing units for workers at its factory in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. Tata Electronics will be building 11,000 of the units, according to the Economic Times, which said the housing development was expected to result in more recruitment and increased production.

  • Two men in Nigeria have been charged over an alleged sextortion case that led to a teenage Australian boy taking his own life. The boy had been engaging online with an unknown person who threatened to share personal photos of him with his family and friends if he did not pay $500, NSW police said in a statement on Monday. The men were found in a slum in Nigeria, NSW police said. The men will be dealt with locally, where authorities can prosecute for Australia-based offences. The commander of NSW’s state crime command’s cybercrime squad, Det Supt Matthew Craft, said young people did not need to suffer in silence. “We’ve seen a huge spike in sextortion cases, which are up nearly 400% in the last 18 months,” he said. “But the good news is people are reporting it and there are steps we can take to help you before it goes too far. “We want young people to continue to report these cases and to never be embarrassed to talk to police.”

  • Brazil’s activist Supreme Court justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered an investigation into Elon Musk, after the billionaire vowed to defy a court order as part of an ongoing probe into social media accounts allegedly spreading misinformation and ‘hate’ speech. “The flagrant conduct of obstruction of Brazilian justice, incitement of crime, the public threat of disobedience of court orders and future lack of cooperation from the platform are facts that disrespect the sovereignty of Brazil,” wrote de Moraes – who Musk called “Brazil’s Darth Vader” over the weekend.

  • A secretive project conducted from the deck of an aircraft carrier in the San Francisco Bay will shoot trillions of aerosol particles into the sky to increase cloud cover in the name of preventing global warming, and details have been held back to “avoid (a) public backlash.” The experiment is being dubbed America’s “first outdoor test to limit global warming.” “The Coastal Atmospheric Aerosol Research and Engagement, or CAARE, project is using specially built sprayers to shoot trillions of sea salt particles into the sky in an effort to increase the density — and reflective capacity — of marine clouds,” reports Scientific American. “The experiment is taking place, when conditions permit, atop the USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum in Alameda, California, and will run through the end of May, according to a weather modification form the team filed with federal regulators.”

  • Ukrainian citizens must realize that none of them will be able to escape mobilization as Kiev’s military suffers personnel shortages, Land Forces Commander Aleksandr Pavlyuk warned in a Facebook post on Monday. Last Wednesday, Ukraine lowered the military conscription age from 27 to 25 in an effort to replenish its depleted ranks. In his message, Pavlyuk urged Ukrainians “to put aside their emotions,” and enlist in the Armed Forces, stating that “the army and the people are inseparable” and that “the protection of the state is the constitutional duty of a citizen.”

  • JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon – warned the world in his annual letter to shareholders that while he expects US economic resilience (and higher inflation and interest rates), and is optimistic about transformational opportunities from AI, he worries geopolitical events including the war in Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas war, as well as U.S. political polarization, might be creating an environment that “may very well be creating risks that could eclipse anything since World War II.”

  • On Jan. 31, a groundbreaking hearing was held on Capitol Hill as the CEOs of five major social media platforms were called to testify (three only after having to be forced by subpoena) about the alleged harm—sometimes fatal—they have inflicted on America’s youth. For more than four hours, with family members in the audience who had lost children to suicide, these tech gurus tried to deflect any talk about or accept responsibility for the alleged negative influence of their platforms. In his recent book, “The Anxious Generation,” social psychologist and author Jonathan Haidt writes: “At the turn of the millennium, technology companies created a set of world-changing products that transformed life not just for adults but for children, too. … Yet, the companies that developed them had done little or no research on the mental health effects. When faced with growing evidence that their products were harming young people, they mostly engaged in denial, obfuscation, and public relations campaigns.” The result has placed our children in a virtual cage that has isolated them physically, socially, and emotionally—with little hope of escape. ~ Timothy S. Goeglein

  • Gender-affirming surgery and surrogacy represent major threats to the dignity of human life, and are on a par with abortion and euthanasia, the Catholic Church has pronounced in its latest doctrinal note. Pope Francis has previously singled out transgenderism as a “dangerous ideology,” claiming it is part of a “global war” against marriage and the family. At the same time, the Vatican has in recent months somewhat relaxed its rules, allowing priests to issue blessings to same-sex couples outside of religious rituals or liturgies, although stopping short of legitimizing what it still terms as “irregular situations.”

  • India is gearing up to supply thousands of metric tonnes of onions to Sri Lanka and UAE, days after it approved limited exports of essential commodities to the Maldives, despite ties between New Delhi and Malé remain tense amid China’s rising influence in the region. The world’s largest global exporter of onions, India has either banned or limited export permits for the in-demand vegetable, as well as for rice, wheat flour, pulses, and sugar, since last December. Subsequently, onion prices are believed to have risen dramatically in neighboring countries that have depended on onion imports from India to meet their domestic demand. Through a “special quota” arrangement, the Indian government recently allowed exports to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Bahrain, and Bhutan.

News Burst 9 April 2024 - Shetland - Scotland

Jarlshof, Shetland – Scotland

The remains at Jarlshof represent thousands of years of human occupation, and can be seen as a microcosm of Shetland history. The site remained largely hidden until a storm in late 19th Century washed away part of the shore, and revealed evidence of these ancient buildings. Formal archaeological excavation started in 1925 and Bronze Age relics were soon discovered. Buildings on the site include the remains of a Bronze Age smithy, an Iron Age broch and roundhouses, a complex of Pictish wheelhouses, a Viking longhouse and a mediaeval farmhouse. No further excavations have been undertaken since the early 1950s and no radiocarbon dating has been attempted. ~ Archaeo Histories
