- A massive fire broke out at a 35-storey apartment building in Dubai in the early hours of this morning. Videos circulating online show flames racing up the Emaar skyscraper, near the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. Chunks of debris can also be seen falling on the ground as emergency services arrive at the scene in Downtown Dubai. It was not immediately clear if anyone was injured in the blaze or what caused it.
- Pope Francis has criticized reforms suggested by a progressive German Catholic movement, which would include allowing women to become deacons and permitting same-sex relationships in an effort to address dwindling numbers.
The German Catholic Church risks falling into “ethical discussions… about contingent things” that have nothing to do with the “core of theology” but would still have “theological consequences,” he warned. The Pope added that otherwise the religion could turn into “an ethicism disguised as Christianity.”
- Italy’s recently formed government under PM Giorgia Meloni has followed through on its campaign promise to crack down on illegal migration, with over 200 refugees having been barred from disembarking NGO rescue ships that entered Italian ports. For the past 14 days, ships run by European charities such as SOS Mediterranee, SOS Humanity and Doctors Without Borders, have been attempting to dock at Italy’s ports to offload several hundred migrants rescued from overloaded boats attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea from north Africa to Europe.
- Finland does not intend to station nuclear weapons on its territory after becoming a NATO member, President Sauli Niinisto said on Monday, adding that Helsinki had not received such offers so far. His statement comes after Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin refused to rule out hosting nukes in the future. Speaking at the opening of a course organized by the National Defense Training Association, Niinisto described recent talks of nuclear weapons that have flared up nationally as “a dangerous development.” “Let me now state clearly: While we do not define restrictions on our NATO membership, Finland has no intention whatsoever to place nuclear weapons on its territory,” he stressed, adding that there were “no signs” of any country approaching Helsinki with such a proposal. At the same time, Niinisto noted that nuclear weapons are a cornerstone of NATO’s deterrence, which serve as a means of prevention, rather than an end in themselves. He also stated that it is impossible to win in a nuclear war, and one should never be fought.
- Russian cat lovers have crowdfunded a memorial statue to a cat, who was tortured to death by a cruel couple who also filmed their acts. The pet killers were sentenced to prison terms earlier this year. The small bronze statue of a ginger cat named Kuzya was unveiled at a pet cemetery in St. Petersburg last week. It will serve as a reminder of the creature’s sad story and as a tribute to all animals who fall victim to human abuse, according to the campaign’s web page. The shocking death of Kuzya was first reported last September after footage of his mistreatment was published online by the perpetrators. He’d been abducted by the couple from the city of Severodvinsk in the northern Arkhangelsk region, an escalation in an ongoing family feud. The pet killers were identified by police as Artyem Lavrentyev and Anna-Viktoria Gromovich, both in their 40s. The woman reportedly had an intense conflict with her partner’s mother, so the two snatched the older woman’s cat and abused him on camera for revenge. Kuzya, who was aged 14 at the time, died after enduring about a week in their captivity. The pair were charged with animal cruelty and, after trial, were each sentenced in February to over three years in prison. A lawyer for the cat’s owner said her client believed the sentence was too mild. The maximum punishment for animal cruelty in Russia is five years in prison.
- Meta Platforms, the parent company of the social networks Facebook and Instagram, plans to dismiss “many thousands” of its employees, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on Sunday, citing sources. The first major layoffs in the firm’s 18-year history follow a sharp post-pandemic fall in its stock price, stronger market competition, and a surge in spending, the newspaper said. According to the WSJ, “the number of Meta employees expected to lose their jobs could be the largest to date at a major technology corporation.” WSJ sources revealed that the company’s management plans to deliver the bad news to staff as soon as Wednesday, and has already told employees to cancel non-essential travel starting this week.
- Multiple web domains belonging to popular free ebook resource ZLibrary were seized by the FBI on Friday after the shadow library fell under investigation by the US Trade Representative. Z-lib.org, b-ok.org, 3lib.net and other domains were taken offline, redirecting to a graphic declaring they had been seized by the FBI in partnership with the US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. While ZLibrary’s darknet domain was still accessible as of Sunday, it carried an error message above the search bar. The site held some 220 terabytes worth of information, much of it copyrighted and all of it free to access. As of September, about 11 million books and 84 million articles were available. Horrified users likened the seizure to the burning of the Library of Alexandria – before trading suggestions for alternate platforms to use, such as free library Libgen.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit Saudi Arabia before the end of 2022, according to US media. Riyadh has long supported China’s positions on key issues, including its sovereignty over Taiwan and its deradicalization policies in Xinjiang. Speaking at a meeting with Foreign Minister Faisal Bin Farhan Al Saud of Saudi Arabia last month, Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councilor Wang Yi told reporters that Beijing “attaches great importance to developing relations with Saudi Arabia, taking Saudi Arabia as a priority in its overall diplomacy, its Middle East diplomacy in particular.”

But in 2014, when Zakaria interviewed Soros, anti-government protesters in Ukraine had recently toppled the government and run the Russian-backed president out of the country. The president had rejected a deal for greater integration with the European Union, leading to mass protests, Vox reported at the time. In the interview, Soros went on to say that Russian President Vladimir Putin would try to “destabilize Ukraine.”

Electromagnetic signals from alien civilizations will continue traveling through the Milky Way even after the aliens are gone.
