  • An engineering director and a software developer have quit Alphabet Inc’s Google over the dismissal of AI researcher Timnit Gebru, a sign of the ongoing conflicts at the search giant over diversity and ethics. David Baker, a director focused on user safety, left Google last month after 16 years because Gebru’s exit “extinguished my desire to continue as a Googler,” he said in a letter seen by Reuters. Baker added, “We cannot say we believe in diversity, and then ignore the conspicuous absence of many voices from within our walls.” Software engineer Vinesh Kannan said Wednesday on Twitter that he had left the company on Tuesday because Google mistreated Gebru and April Christina Curley, a recruiter who has said she was wrongly fired last year.

  • It seems Elon Musk has grown tired of creating slick electric vehicles and space ships that will take us to the far corners of the universe as he tries his hand in new sphere – financial markets. Taking to Twitter late Friday, the tech maverick put up a survey on the future currency of Earth. Sad news for the US Department of Treasury as the dollar did not make it into the poll. Neither did the euro or pound sterling. Musk’s poll did not feature any fiat currencies. Instead, users were offered a choice between Dogecoin and “all cryptocurrencies combined”.

  • On Sunday, US astronauts living aboard the ISS orbital outpost will break the record for most days in space by a crew launched aboard an American spacecraft, NASA said. “They will surpass the record of 84 days set by the Skylab 4 crew on Feb. 8, 1974”, NASA said. The Skylab 4 crew, with NASA astronauts Gerald Carr, Edward Gibson, and William Pogue, docked their Apollo spacecraft to the Skylab space station 47 years to the day the SpaceX crew docked to the orbiting lab, the US space authority noted.

  • Serious allegations of abuse seem to have ended the career of Satanic rocker Marilyn Manson. In response to the cavalcade of allegations, Loma Vista Recordings, which distributes Manson’s albums, said it would cease promoting his current album and refused to work with him again in the future, and the powerhouse Creative Artists Agency quickly dropped him as a client.

  • Nations move to remove the role of the U.S. dollar at the center of global trade and finance. This will have a long-lasting structural impact in ending the dominance of the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. Asia is not the only region taking steps to disentangle itself from the U.S. dollar standard in global trade and payments. The European Commission, the executive branch of the 27-country European Union (EU), released a communication explicitly stating the goal to strengthen the “international role of the euro.” The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), the largest global payment settlement network, has already experienced drop-off in dollar transactions in its most-recent readings.

  • Dozens of communities in a Chiapas municipality, Mexico, have officially said “thanks but no thanks” to Covid-19 vaccinations, following a stance already taken by residents of 24 other municipalities. “Only two people voluntarily wanted to get the vaccine,” said San Juan Cancuc Mayor José López López in a letter he wrote on Monday to Ministry of Health officials in San Cristóbal de las Casas, explaining that 45 communities in his municipality had voted to disallow any vaccination campaigns in their villages, including shots for the elderly.

  • The 59-year-old British ex-girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein, who has been held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in New York since last year, is currently allowed her laptop during the week to review documents ahead of her people-trafficking trial. Speaking on behalf of Maxwell, lawyer Ms Sternheim said the 30 minutes it takes to upload the “millions” of files onto the jail computers was “very slow”. It also claims Maxwell has been subjected to psychological and physical abuse by prison staff, who allegedly “mishandled” hard-drives causing them not to work properly. The document states: “Hard drives provided by the government have been mishandled by MDC staff (dropped on the floor and slammed on a cart) causing them to become degraded and unstable and to randomly shut down.

  • A new study proposes an explanation to why the Pleiades are called ”Seven Sisters.” This head scratcher has puzzled many scientists, such as astrophysicist Ray Norris of Western Sydney University and Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Astronomy and Space Science in Australia. Many cultures around the world refer to the Pleiades with the number seven, and it may be due to a story told by African ancestors 100,000 years ago. Norris has worked with Indigenous Australians and learned many of their sky stories, including those of different groups who identify the Pleiades as seven girls being chased by the constellation Orion, who is a hunter in these tales. This storyline is extremely similar to the one in ancient Greek legends about these constellations. The case isn’t entirely surprising, given that both Orion and the Pleiades are bright and prominent celestial features, and that Earth’s rotation makes it look to us like the former is chasing the latter across the night sky. Norris noted that one of the Seven Sisters — a star known as Pleione — is often lost in the glare of a nearby star called Atlas, making it invisible to most human eyes. But 100,000 years ago, when humans were first emerging from the African continent and spreading over the world, the two stars would have been more separated in the night sky, perhaps accounting for why the Pleiades are named for seven beings in many stories. In other words — our ancestors carried this story about the night sky with them as they migrated to Europe, across Asia, and eventually to Australia.

  • England’s local elections will go ahead in May, the UK government announced on Friday. Polling stations will echo supermarkets with plastic screens, social distance-markers, and plenty of hand-sanitiser. The usual stubby pencils will be available—but people are advised to bring their own, or a pen. Voters will need to wear a mask, in accordance with current legislation.

  • On 4 February, the Office of Communications, the UK government-approved regulatory body commonly known as Ofcom, announced that it had withdrawn the licence for China Global Television Network (CGTN) to broadcast in the UK. China Global Television Network has been banned by Ofcom in the UK on the pretext that Star China Media Limited (SCML), the licence-holder for the broadcaster, did not have editorial responsibility for the latter’s output; and that an entity called China Global Television Network Corporation (CGTNC), which exercises general control over the broadcaster, cannot hold the licence since it is controlled by the Chinese government.

News Burst 7 February 2021 - Antarctica Pyramid

Oldest Pyramid on Earth is hidden on icy Antarctica. A pyramid-like structure is near the Shackleton mountain range on the Antarctica continent. When viewed on satellite imagery, the pyramid appears to have four steep sides, similar to Giza’s Great Pyramid. David Childress said if this giant Antarctica pyramid is an artificial structure, it would probably be the oldest pyramid on Earth. In fact, it might be the pilot pyramid that all the other pyramids on the planet were designed to look like. Dr. Michael Sala, author of Exopolitics Political Implications of the Extraterrestrial Presence, has a different theory. He said the pyramid is just one node in a worldwide network of power-generating pyramids strategically installed around Earth.

News Burst 7 February 2021 - Elephant Seal

A southern Elephant Seal decided to take a break from a long migration and sun itself on beaches in Oaxaca, Mexico, this week. The seal, a rare sight in Mexico since it normally lives in sub-Antarctic and Antarctic waters, landed first on a beach in Barra de la Cruz on Tuesday and then showed up in Huatulco, according to regional Civil Protection and Huatulco National Park officials. Photos show the marine mammal happily beached on the sand.

Billionaires like Bill Gates have long said that they, theoretically, would be in favor of paying much more money in personal taxes. And yet the “philanthropist” Bill Gates and some of the wealthiest people in the world are staying silent on a series of active proposals that would do just that, sidestepping a legislative package in their home state of Washington that targets them specifically.
