  • A new group at the University of St Andrews in Scotland wants to put together a plan for what to do if we encounter aliens here on Earth. With help from experts from across the world, they will be putting together robust protocols and treaties, as well as assessing any evidence of intelligent civilisations. Their preparatory work will take place at a new research hub at the university, dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). “But we need to go beyond thinking about the impact on humanity, ” said Dr John Elliott, a computer scientist and coordinator of the SETI Post-Detection Hub. The group feels that limited attention has been given to the consequences on society if alien intelligence is detected.

  • In 1999 astronomers focusing on a star at the center of the Milky Way, measured precisely how long it takes the sun to complete one orbit (a galactic year) of our home galaxy: 226 million years, bobbing our fraught journey through the disc of the Milky Way, drifting through ghostly spiral arms and the darkness of dense nebulae, keeping a constant 30,000 light years between Earth and the violent galactic core. The last time the sun was at that exact spot of its galactic orbit, Tyrannosaurus rex ruled the Earth. Our orbit through the Milky Way is not a perfect circle or an ellipse, since the galaxy itself is a landscape of undulating concentrations of mass and complex gravitational fields. “None of the components of the galaxy are stationary,” writes Columbia University astrophysicist Caleb Scharf in The Copernicus Complex,” they, too, are orbiting and drifting in a three-dimensional ballet. The result is that our solar system, like billions of others, must inevitably encounter patches of interstellar space containing the thicker molecular gases and microscopic dust grains of nebulae. It takes tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years to pass through one of these regions.”

  • San Francisco prosecutors refuse to release police bodycam and surveillance videos from the home of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, where her husband Paul Pelosi survived a vicious attack by a home intruder last month. “Mr. Pelosi opened the door, they were both holding a hammer and the police observed Mr. DePape pull that hammer away and then strike Mr. Pelosi,’ District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said on Thursday. That is the most that we’re going to say at this point. Our job is not to try this case in the public or in the press. It’s to try it in a courtroom.” He did not elaborate further on the reasons behind the decision not to share the footage with the general public.

  • With the midterm elections in the United States just around the corner, the Biden administration has found itself under fire from critics who are none too pleased with how the US government has been handling things both at home and abroad since January 2021. Some of these critics, however, argue that things may be more complicated and that Joe Biden is not the real mastermind behind the recent shifts in US politics. One such critic, US national pro-family group MassResistance head Brian Camenker, argued that Biden signed “dozens of extensively radical executive orders” after being sworn in, and that the Biden administration sought to populate the federal government and judiciary with “hundreds (probably thousands) of the most extreme anti-American people imaginable.” He also bashed Biden’s policy on immigration, describing it as welcoming millions of illegal aliens to “swarm” across the US southern border, and insisted that the so-called “green new deal” promoted by the White House effectively paralyzes the transportation system in the US and causes “crippling inflation never seen in this country before.” “As many have observed, it’s a controlled demolition of America,” Camenker lamented.

  • Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi responded to Biden’s promises to “free Iran,” giving the US leader a history lesson on when the Islamic Republic gained true freedom. “I was informed a few hours ago that the president of the United States had uttered some words due to distraction, he said [the US was] aiming to ‘free Iran’,” Raisi said in a speech in Tehran on Friday marking the anniversary of the 1979 takeover of the US Embassy, which the Islamic Republic celebrates as the ‘National Day of the Fight Against Global Arrogance.’ “Iran was freed 43 years ago and is determined not to be occupied by you. And we will never be your milk cows,” Raisi said, referencing the Iranian Revolution which overthrew the country’s US-backed dictator, the Shah.

  • Social media platform Twitter has made good on its warnings and slashed 50% of its workforce, the company’s head of safety and integrity Yoel Roth announced in a tweet on Saturday. “Yesterday’s reduction in force affected approximately 15% of our Trust & Safety organization (as opposed to approximately 50% cuts company-wide), with our front-line moderation staff experiencing the least impact,” he tweeted, emphasizing that the team responsible for monitoring and preventing misinformation and harmful content on the platform has remained largely intact.

  • UK military-intelligence operatives are reportedly working to create and train a covert terrorist force in Ukraine assigned to attack Russian targets in Crimea on behalf of the Kiev government. Working through a private British intelligence services firm called Prevail Partners, the operatives signed an agreement with the Odessa branch of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) to build the so-called “partisan” terror army, The Grayzone reported on Thursday, citing leaked documents detailing the plans. The work is conducted in close coordination with the SSU and is possibly funded at least partly by Ukrainian oligarch Andrey Sadovoy, who is the mayor of Lviv and heads the country’s TRK Lux media company. “Their plans called for the secret army to conduct sabotage and reconnaissance operations targeting Crimea … precisely the kind of attacks witnessed in past weeks,” The Grayzone wrote.

  • Archaeologists in the United Arab Emirates have unearthed the ruins of a Christian monastery on an island off the coast of the Umm al-Quwain emirate. Hidden for more than a millennium beneath a sand dune, the monastery may predate the rise of Islam across the Arabian Peninsula. The emirate’s tourism and archaeology department announced the find on Thursday. Archaeologists discovered the remains of a church, a refectory (dining hall), cisterns, and cells for the monks where they spent time in solitude, The National, a Dubai-based news site, reported. Carbon dating on pottery excavated at the site revealed that it was occupied between the late sixth century and the middle of the eighth century. The Prophet Mohammed was born in the late sixth century, and it would take until the mid-seventh century for the first Caliph, Abu Bakr, to bring the entire Arabian peninsula under Islamic rule. Prior to this first Islamic conquest, Arabia was home to Christians, Jews, and clans and tribes of pagan Arabs.

“The Terminal Man”

Mehran Karimi Nasseri, known as Sir Alfred Mehran, has earned a reputation as “The Terminal Man.” He is a famous Iranian refugee stuck at the airport for 18 years due to a stolen passport and essential documents during the trip. Without a passport or identification, he could not exit the departure lounge of Terminal 1 at Charles de Gaulle Airport in France. He lived, studied, slept, and talked with the airport staff from August 26, 1988, to July 2006. The government attempted to remove Mehran Karimi Nasseri from the French airport, but most failed. He wanted to naturalize as a British citizen and start a new life far away from Iran. How he got stuck and lived at an airport for 18 years through legal loopholes has surprised people worldwide.
