  • Last week, Finnish broadcaster Yle cited Lappeenranta Mayor Kimmo Jarva as saying that his city and the entire region could benefit from an inflow of investment after the country ascends to NATO. He said the city airport in particular could be used for military purposes. Lappeenranta, a city of some 70,000 residents, is located in the South Karelia region 20km from the Russian border.

  • Actress Bette Midler and singer Macy Gray have both landed themselves in trouble with transgender activists for arguing that men can’t become women through surgery, and that transgender-friendly language strips women of their rights. Amid the outcry, ‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling came to Gray’s defense. In an interview with British broadcaster Piers Morgan on Monday, Gray agreed that transgender women – who are biologically male – shouldn’t compete in women’s sports. “Everyone’s gonna hate me but as a woman, just because you go change your parts, doesn’t make you a woman, sorry,” Gray stated. “If you want me to call you a ‘her’, I will, because that’s what you want but that doesn’t make you a woman… just because you got a surgery,” she continued.

  • Kiev’s strident ambassador to Berlin, Andrey Melnik, might be about to leave Germany to potentially take a new post within the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, German tabloid Bild reported on Monday, citing an unnamed Ukrainian official. Melnik has recently found himself at the center of yet another scandal after defending Nazi collaborator and Ukrainian national hero Stepan Bandera in an interview. “Andrey Melnik is very much appreciated in Kiev for his work,” a Ukrainian government official told Bild. According to the media outlet, the ambassador might get the post of deputy foreign minister.

  • A video depicting a drag queen clad only in spangled panties and a body harness leading a young girl adorned in a tiara around a bar has elicited outrage and demands for legal action from viewers after the clip went viral over the weekend. The footage shows the unnamed performer strutting around Miami’s R House Wynwood restaurant, G-string stuffed with cash and enormous breasts bared, hand-in-hand with the child – who was apparently also deputized to collect cash tips from patrons. It was posted to TikTok by user @nononoie, who captioned it “children belong at drag shows!!!! children deserve to see fun & expression & freedom.” The user has since locked the account, according to the Daily Mail. R House Wynwood advertises “drag extravaganzas” three days a week. The menu for its “drag brunch” is explicitly child-friendly, with a “kids brunch” option for children under 12 years of age that includes two food items, a non-alcoholic beverage, and “of course our fabulous show.”“These people belong in jail,” pundit Lauren Chen tweeted on Saturday in response to the video, adding that the issue was a “hill [she was] willing to die on.”

  • NASA Administrator Bill Nelson has long been a critic of China’s ambitious space program, despite Beijing’s assurances that it has purely peaceful purposes. In April, he accused Beijing of refusing to work with the US and concealing important data, even though the 2011 Wolf Amendment prohibits NASA from direct cooperation with Chinese scientists without congressional authorization. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian responded to the accusations on Monday, saying this is “not the first time that the head of the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration has ignored the facts and spoken irresponsibly about China.” “The US side has constantly constructed a smear campaign against China’s normal and reasonable outer space endeavors, and China firmly opposes such irresponsible remarks,” he added, claiming that China has always stood against weaponization and promotes the shared future of humanity in outer space. While defending China’s space program, Zhao claimed the US has its own “dirty record” of creating space junk, developing offensive space weapons, and inciting space arms races by openly declaring outer space as an “operational frontier” and a “warfighting domain.”

  • The US Defense Department is significantly increasing its spending to develop new very high altitude balloons to operate in the stratosphere with possible capabilities to track incoming hypersonic weapons and target interceptors to destroy them, Politico reported on Tuesday. The balloons would be designed to operate in the stratosphere between altitudes of 60,000 to 90,000 feet (18,300 to 27,400 meters) and would be integrated into existing surveillance and early warning systems, the report said. The unmanned balloons would be operated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms and could supplement vastly more expensive surveillance satellites, according to the report.

  • As French capital prepares to host the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics, it seems that one of the most famous landmarks in the city is in dire need of repair, French magazine Marianne reports. According to the media outlet, several confidential reports suggest that the legendary Eiffel Tower has in fact been in a “very degraded state” for several years. “It’s very simple, if Gustave Eiffel visited the place, he would have fainted,” said one unnamed manager who works at the site. Describing the current state of affairs at the famous structure, the magazine says that “in some places, rust has won and is eating away at the iron of the monument like termites at wood,” while the effort to repaint the tower that was launched in 2018 became a “fiasco.”

  • Canadians will be required to get a Covid shot every nine months for the foreseeable future, says Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos. Previous definitions of “fully vaccinated” made no sense, he told reporters. “Nine months is very clear and will help people understand why ‘up to date’ is the right way to think about vaccination now,” said Duclos. “‘Fully vaccinated’ makes no sense now. It’s about ‘up to date.’ So am I up to date in my vaccination? Have I received a vaccination in the last nine months?”

  • A mere week after agreeing to the Scandinavian countries’ joining, Turkey is threatening to block the expansion if they don’t follow through on extraditing people the Turkish government sees as terrorists.
