- A life-threatening cold spell began to ease its grip on the northeastern United States, but only after a new national windchill record was set in New Hampshire. The record was set at Mount Washington Friday night when it felt like minus 108° F thanks to a temperature of minus 46° F and wind gusts of 127 mph. Wind chill records are not historically tracked as closely as temperature records, but the mark would beat what most meteorologists believe to be the US record (minus 105° F in Alaska). The prior record for Mount Washington was minus 102.7° F in 2004.
- Iran’s supreme leader has pardoned “tens of thousands” of prisoners including some arrested in recent anti-government protests, state news agency IRNA reported on Sunday.
- Xi Jinping expands china’s presence by building new satellite stations in Antarctica. Research stations are a country’s most visible presence in Antarctica. The People’s Republic of China (PRC)has built four research stations – two permanent (in 1985 and 1989) and two summer (in 2009 and 2014) – and is building a fifth one. Along with stations, the PRC is also expanding its logistics capability. It has two operating polar ice breakers, and a third one is under construction as a key project of the 14th Five Year Plan. It also operates a polar fixed-wing aircraft in Antarctica and has the overland capability to supply its two inland, summer stations. State media say the stations will be used for marine surveys and weather monitoring, to help China’s observation satellites spot exploitation of marine resources and monitor the ecology of coastal areas, but the move raises concerns over espionage and other military activities.
- China says it “reserves the right” to deal with “similar situations” following the United States’ decision to shoot down its high-altitude balloon. “The US used force to attack our civilian unmanned airship, which is an obvious overreaction. We express solemn protest against this move by the US side,” China’s Defense Ministry spokesperson Tan Kefei said in a statement. China’s Foreign Ministry had accused the US of “overreacting” and “seriously violating international practice,” after US military fighter jets on Saturday shot down the balloon over the Atlantic Ocean in a mission President Joe Biden hailed as a success.
- A “small number” of sailors have been hospitalized “as a precaution” after a crew member on board the HMS Portland added the wrong chemicals to the system meant to convert sea water into drinkable water, officials confirmed on Saturday. The frigate returned to its base in Portsmouth on Friday after the sailor responsible for the mixup realized the mistake and notified superiors, the Daily Telegraph reported. A Navy source confirmed to the outlet the nature of the “poisoning” and commended the individual responsible for coming clean right away.
- Germany reduced exports to Russia in December by 16.7% to €900 million ($988 million) compared to the previous month, according to the country’s Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). Data showed on Thursday that the volume of German exports to Russia was nearly 60% lower than in December 2021. Imports from Russia remained virtually unchanged compared to November, amounting to €1.6 billion ($1.7 billion). Back in 2021, Russia accounted for 2.3% of total German foreign trade and was among the country’s 15 most important trading partners.
- State legislatures around the United States are keenly watching the fate of a Massachusetts bill allowing prisoners to receive up to one year off their jail sentence by donating their organs. According to reports, Bill HD.3822, called the “Act to establish the Massachusetts incarcerated individual bone marrow and organ donation program,” would allow participating prisoners to receive a minimum of 60 days and up to a whole year off their sentence. It would be set up in a special parole hearing based similarly on commuted sentences for “good behavior.” However, it would also encourage repeat donations, and since those incarcerated in the US are disproportionately minorities and low-income earners, it bears similarities to the country’s blood and plasma donation scheme. That system preys on low-income earners and students, encouraging them to consistently donate their blood at for-profit collection centers, effectively selling it in a sort of vampiric version of capitalism. ~ Bradley Blankenship
- Armie Hammer broke his silence more than two years after finding himself in the epicenter of a scandal involving allegations of rape, sexual abuse, and cannibalistic fantasies. He, however, admitted to emotionally abusing his ex-partners, and revealed that he attempted suicide in February 2021 after facing multiple accusations, which led to his career downfall. The 36-year-old actor also revealed that he had been molested by a pastor when he was only 13. This trauma, he said, prompted his interest in BDSM.
- Mount Washington is the highest mountain in the northeastern US at 1,917 meters. The mountain is known for its dangerously variable weather and has long held the record for the 372 km/h wind speed measured on the ground. The Mount Washington area recorded its worst frost since 1934 and the coldest winds ever, making the peak as cold as Mars. Temperatures reached 45°F (-43°C), with windchill temperatures at -106°F (-77°C). Wind gusts reached over 125 mph (200 km/h), reports Mount Washington observatory.
- Water is one of the basic elements on Earth. However, water in space may have different characteristics than terrestrial water. A team of scientists at University College London and Cambridge University has discovered the existence of a new form of ice. This ice looks like a fine powder but is more like liquid water in its properties and structure. Such ice can’t form naturally on Earth, but it might do so in space and on the cold moons. The study of this new form will help advance the understanding of all water’s properties.
