  • State-owned refiners in India witnessed a 25% surge in imports of Russian oil in September compared with the previous month, according to energy cargo tracker Vortexa. This rise has contributed to a almost 10% overall rise in India’s imports from Russia. These findings add further evidence to suggest that the G7 price cap has not posed a substantial hindrance to India’s oil imports.

  • Roscosmos invites Brazil, Turkey and South Africa to participate in the Russian Orbital Station (ROS) project. According to Yuri Borisov, the head of the Russian space corporation, these countries have expressed interest in joining the orbital station project, the construction of which is scheduled to begin in 2027. • The French health minister assured the nation that there was no need to panic about bedbug infestation, after commuters complained that public transport in Paris was crawling with the bloodsucking insects. “There is no reason for general panic. We are not being invaded by bedbugs. And it is not related to migration, if this needs to be said… It is related to mobility: when you return from abroad, you may bring them on yourself,” Aurelien Rousseau told a French radio broadcaster. Bedbug infestation is giving headaches to the French sanitary watchdog Anses in the run-up to the 2024 summer Olympics. Anses estimates that the insects have invaded one in 10 households across France in the past several years. In recent months, they have been popping up in hotels, cinemas, on trains, and even on ferries.

  • [Driver sudden death] The Venice prefect’s department has confirmed that 21 people are dead after a bus plunged from an overpass above a railway line between the districts of Mestre and Marghera on Tuesday. • Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán clearly marks his boundaries. He criticizes Biden, Soros and the EU for pressure and states that Hungary will not support an eternal conflict in Ukraine, become a migrant repository or allow gender ideology in schools.

  • Major Scandinavian Airline Shares Plummet 95% as Owners Booted. The overhaul will strip the SAS of existing ownership and get it delisted from the stock exchange. • A climate researcher has been threatened with the sack by his employer after refusing to fly back to Germany at short notice after finishing fieldwork on Bougainville in the Solomon Islands archipelago. On Friday, Dr Gianluca Grimalda, an environmental campaigner who refuses to fly on principle, was told by his employer, Germany ‘s Kiel Institute for World Economy, that if he was not at his desk on Monday he would no longer have a job to return to. Instead this week he was still waiting in Buka Town, Bougainville, to embark on a cargo ship to begin his journey back to Europe, after six months studying the impact of climate change and globalization on communities in Papua New Guinea.

  • A team from the Virtual Telescope Project has discovered a probable nova in Messier 31, also known as the Andromeda Galaxy. This discovery was made during an ongoing survey of Messier 31 and Messier 33. The nova was first spotted on October 1, 2023, using images captured by a 250mm-f/4.5 astrograph. Follow-up observations confirmed the existence of the source and showed that it was slightly brighter than at the time of discovery. Spectroscopy is now needed to definitively determine the nature of this transient object.

  • The United States government, and many state governments are proclaiming for all to hear that they did not force anyone to do anything detrimental these past 3.5 years. UNBELIEVABLE! Did you hear this? They are actually saying with straight faces that they didn’t force you to wear a mask, or lock down and shutter your businesses, or choose between taking an experimental drug or losing your job… Nope! They did none of that. And you – well, you are flat out crazy if you think they did. You are lying. You are exaggerating and totally overreacting.

  • Increasingly astronomers are turning to artificial intelligence to process the data, pruning out the useless bits of the images to produce a clean result. For example, an image of the supermassive black hole at the heart of the galaxy Messier 87 (M87) first released in 2019 was given a machine learning “makeover” in April 2023, resulting in a much clearer image of the black hole’s structure. In another example, some astronomers will feed images of galaxies into a neural network algorithm, instructing the algorithm with the classification scheme for the discovered galaxies. The existing classifications came from manual assignments, either by the researchers themselves or by volunteer citizen science efforts.

  • Planetary scientists have long known that Mercury has been shrinking for billions of years. Despite being the closest planet to the Sun, its interior has been cooling down as internal heat leaks away. This means that the rock (and, within that, the metal) of which it is composed must have contracted slightly in volume. The first evidence of Mercury’s shrinkage came in 1974 when the Mariner 10 mission transmitted pictures of kilometres-high scarps (ramp-like slopes) snaking their way for hundreds of kilometres across the terrain. Messenger, which orbited Mercury 2011-2015, showed many more “lobate scarps” (as they had become known) in all parts of the globe.
