- According to multiple sources, Musk started massive layoffs at Twitter on Nov. 4, reducing the company’s workforce of 7,500 people. In response to the layoffs, Twitter employees filed a class-action lawsuit against Musk in San Francisco federal court, Bloomberg reported. The suit argues that Twitter is violating federal and California laws by laying off employees without enough notice. Renowned civil rights attorney Lisa Bloom argued that Musk has completely ignored the law, which applies to all California employers of more than 75 employees.
- Amazon and two other major US tech companies are the latest big names in corporate America to sound the economic alarm, announcing job cuts and other cost-control measures as they brace for “leaner times.” Ride-hailing giant Lyft Inc. revealed on Thursday that it will slash its staffing by 13%, eliminating about 700 jobs. Stripe Inc., a major payments processor, announced a 14% reduction in its workforce, putting around 1,000 people out of work. Amazon, the world’s largest retailer, told employees that it’s freezing corporate hiring for at least the next few months. “We are facing stubborn inflation, energy shocks, higher interest rates, reduced investment budgets and sparser startup funding,” Stripe co-founders Patrick and John Collison said in a note to employees. The company underestimated the impact of a broad economic slowdown, they added, and now must cut costs “to adapt ourselves to the world we’re headed into.”
- The European Union is trying to determine whether it’s feasible to use the assets of the Russian Central Bank that have been frozen by member states to finance Ukraine, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. Some $300 billion belonging to the Russian Central Bank were frozen by the EU, the US, and their allies as part of anti-Russia sanctions. Any EU action would deal with assets held in Europe, Bloomberg says, adding that the issue has also been raised with the US.
- The Argentine Foreign Ministry requested on Thursday that Britain comply with a UN resolution and resume talks on the sovereignty of the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands. The request came after London agreed to negotiate with Mauritius over the future of the Chagos Islands. British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said on Thursday that the UK wants to “resolve all outstanding issues” with Mauritius over the Chagos Archipelago, a British territory in the Indian Ocean since 1814 that remained under British control after Mauritius won its independence from the UK in 1968. Ignored by London for decades, a UN resolution compels Britain to reach a settlement with Mauritius over the islands. Guillermo Carmona, an official at the Argentine Foreign Ministry, said that Britain’s decision to enter talks with Mauritius marks “a transcendental day for all the peoples who fight to put an end to colonialism.”
- An Irish Catholic priest has refused to back down after he was censured by his own bishop for condemning the “mortal sins” of abortion and homosexuality. The priest maintains that his views are in line with the Church’s teachings, and that Ireland’s deputy prime minister, Leo Varadkar, will burn in hell for being gay. Father Sean Sheehy, a resident of Listowel in County Kerry, came out of retirement on Sunday to fill in for a local priest currently on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Churchgoers were shocked, with several dozen walking out of mass, when Sheehy took to the pulpit to denounce the “rampant” sin in Irish society.
- The US does not plan to permanently base “strategic” weapons systems in South Korea at this time, but will evaluate that position in consultation with Seoul and Tokyo in order to deter any attack from North Korea, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday. “We don’t have a plan to change our permanent positioning or stationing of assets on the peninsula, currently,” Austin replied, before rephrasing. “No new deployment of strategic assets on a permanent basis, but you’ll see assets move in and out on a routine basis.”
- A new German request to allow it to send Swiss-made ammunition to Ukraine has been rejected. Switzerland’s goverment revealed on Thursday that Economy Minister Guy Parmelin turned down the appeal, which had been made in an official letter sent by German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht to Bern last month. In her correspondence, Lambrecht had asked for permission to supply some 12,400 rounds of ammunition for Gepard anti-aircraft vehicles, which Berlin sent earlier this year to prop-up Kiev in the ongoing conflict with Moscow. “Under the principle of equal treatment in neutrality law, Switzerland cannot agree to a request for the transfer of war materiel of Swiss origin to Ukraine as long as the latter is involved in an international armed conflict,” the Swiss government explained in a statement.
- Fans of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series have been accused of creating an environmental hazard after hundreds of people left socks in honor of the house elf Dobby at a memorial on the Freshwater West Beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The memorial is located at the spot where the film adaptation of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1’ shows Dobby’s death in Harry’s arms, in which Dobby described the expansive beach as a “beautiful place to be with friends.”
- Astronomers have discovered the closest black hole to Earth, which the researchers have dubbed Gaia BH1. The dormant black hole weighs about 10 times the mass of the Sun and is located about 1600 light-years away in the constellation Ophiuchus, making it three times closer to Earth than the previous record holder, an X-ray binary in the constellation of Monoceros. The discovery was made possible by making exquisite observations of the motion of the black hole’s companion, a Sun-like star that orbits the black hole at about the same distance as the Earth orbits the Sun.
