- Researchers from St Petersburg Institute of Experimental Medicine are to study viruses and bacteria extracted from permafrost deposits of a giant thermokarst depression, known as the Batagai crater. The tadpole-shaped depression near the village of Batagai, some 660km northeast of Yakutsk, appeared in the late 1960s when the forest in the area was cleared away. It has been growing ever since – lately increasing in size at up to 30 metres a year – and is now one kilometre long, 800 metres wide and over a hundred metres deep. The depression is a treasure trove for scientists around the globe, as it contains ‘some of the best preserved and oldest frozen soils ever to be found in permafrost regions’, according to Professor Julian Murton, from the University of Sussex.
- Russia has begun planning the build of ‘Venera-D’, a spacecraft destined to become the first sent by Moscow to Venus since Soviet times. Initially planned as a joint operation with America’s NASA, it will now likely be unilateral. Speaking to the TASS news agency, the scientific director of the Institute of Space Research Lev Zeleny explained that the vessel will first be launched in 2029, if everything runs on schedule. Russia’s Venus program is planned to involve at least three separate missions, with Venera-D being the first. Relatives told local media a pathologist saw the body move as it lay on the autopsy table. A government health officer confirmed the incident and told AFP the injured man was then immediately admitted to another hospital, where his condition was improving. The official said doctors at the private hospital had exercised “bad judgement” when they removed him from the ventilator and presumed him dead

Billionaires like Bill Gates have long said that they, theoretically, would be in favor of paying much more money in personal taxes. And yet the “philanthropist” Bill Gates and some of the wealthiest people in the world are staying silent on a series of active proposals that would do just that, sidestepping a legislative package in their home state of Washington that targets them specifically.
