  • Criminals in Finland have got hold of some of the weapons that were sent to Ukraine by its Western backers amid the conflict with Russia, the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has said. “We’ve seen signs of these weapons already finding their way to Finland,” NBI detective superintendent Christer Ahlgren told the news outlet Yle on Sunday. Assault rifles were among the weaponry, Ahlgren said, but declined to provide further details, as the investigation is still ongoing. Arms trafficking routes from Ukraine to Finland have already been set up, according to the investigator. “Three of the world’s largest motorcycle gangs — that are part of larger international organizations — are active in Finland. One of these is Bandidos MC, which has a unit in every major Ukrainian city,” he said.

  • NATO could establish permanent bases or deploy nuclear weapons in Finland once the country joins the bloc, Prime Minister Sanna Marin has warned, although she added that the scenario is unlikely. “I’ve considered it very important that we don’t set these kinds of pre-conditions, or limit our own room for maneuvering, when it comes to permanent bases or nuclear weapons,” Marin said on Finland’s Yle TV1 channel on Saturday. She promptly qualified her statement by adding that such a development was not necessarily on the cards.

  • After serving as a PM for just 44 days, Liz Truss is supposed to get a hefty severance package of almost £19,000 (over $22,000). However, it seems that British taxpayers do not think she should be entitled to a £115,000 per year payment – a Public Duty Costs Allowance (PDCA) usually claimed by ex-prime ministers. According to a poll by Redfield & Wilton Strategies, 84% believe she should not receive the benefit, while only 9% think otherwise, and 7% are undecided on the issue.

  • The grasslands of the Namib Desert are covered with millions of strange circles from 2 to 10 meters in width, each devoid of grass or other vegetation. Together they form an eerie polka-dot pattern across the landscape. Scientists have been puzzled over the origin of Namibian “fairy circles” for nearly half a century, but now a new study led by a team of researchers from Göttingen University revealed the reason behind the mysterious circles. Up until recently, scientists had two major theories for the appearance of these mysterious circles. The first theory claimed that the circles were caused by termites, while another suggested that grasses self-organized to maximize water availability. Then, some researches suggested that both termites and self-organization may be behind the “fairy circles.” However, the mystery became even more confusing after similar circles were discovered in Australia in 2016, where the connection with termites was not traced.

  • London’s Natural History Museum and Cambridge University agreed to cooperate with Harare to repatriate human remains of Zimbabwean origin that were seized during the colonial era.The statement followed negotiations between the delegation from Zimbabwe with the officials of both institutions. Zimbabweans are searching for the skulls of anti-colonial leaders from the late 19th century that were taken to Britain as trophies during the uprising against British rule in the 1890s. One of these ‘heroes’ is Charwe Nyakashikana, better known as Mbuya (Grandmother) Nehanda, a medium of the revered ancestral spirit of Nehanda, a symbol of the anti-colonial struggle. She was arrested and executed by hanging after being accused of killing a British official. It is assumed that after the hanging Nehanda was beheaded.

  • As rumors abound across social media, new details have emerged in the hammer assault on Paul Pelosi, husband of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi — including the eyebrow-raising news that Pelosi referred to his assailant as a “friend” when calling police. The Times article, citing police sources, first reports that Pelosi “tricked” DePape and made a surreptitious phone call, but later, the same article says “officials believe Pelosi was intentionally giving coded information because the intruder knew Pelosi was on the phone.” Perhaps the call started surreptitiously and but then DePape overheard him, or Pelosi was at least wary of it. With that in mind, it’s conceivable Pelosi wasn’t being sincere in calling DePape a “friend,” but rather was trying to soothe the reportedly nutty DePape, who’s been described as a “psychotic, homeless addict estranged from his nudist lover and their children” — and who “talks to angels.” Citing “sources,” San Francisco Fox affiliate KTVU on Friday reported that DePape was in his underwear. However, KTVU has retracted that claim and posted a correction at the bottom of the article: “An earlier version of this story misstated what clothing the suspect was wearing when officers found him.” Zero Hedge hasn’t found another credible source reporting that either DePape or Pelosi were only in underwear (though, at 2 am, it would be understandable if Pelosi was.)

  • While no traces of life have been found on Mars so far, it seems that the Red Planet may be somewhat “lively” in terms of volcanic activity, an international team of researchers suggests. Using the data supplied by NASA’s InSight lander regarding a series of low-frequency marsquakes, researchers led by Simon Stahler from the Institute of Geophysics at ETH Zurich postulate that seismic activity detected by the craft primarily originates from a series of fissures on the planet’s surface, known as Cerberus Fossae. “We show that the spectral character of deeper low-frequency marsquakes suggests a structurally weak, potentially warm source region consistent with recent magmatic activity at depths of 30–50 km,” the researchers write in their work, which was published this week in the Nature Astronomy journal. The team also took note of the distinctly darker shade of the dust deposits in the area in question, with Stahler suggesting it “signifies geological evidence of more recent volcanic activity – perhaps within the past 50,000 years – relatively young, in geological terms,” according to a press release by ETH Zurich.

  • Researchers operating the Hubble Space Telescope have unveiled a photo of a distant spiral galaxy that may help astronomers measure distances to the more remote celestial bodies out there. Designated UGC 9391, the galaxy in question resides in the Draco constellation, some 130 million light years away. The image of the galaxy was released late last month and is part of a set of observations performed by the space telescope, which astronomers used in the creation of the so-called “Cosmic Distance Ladder” – a “set of connected measurements” expected to help gauge how far some of the more distant objects in space actually are. As European Space Agency explained in a statement accompanying the galaxy’s image, distance in space can only be directly measured for objects located roughly 3,000 light years away. For the celestial bodies that lie even farther away, astronomers have to “rely on a set of measured correlations calibrated against nearby objects.”

A Huge Version Of Itself

This isn’t a spider, but an effigy that a spider has built out of debris to represent a huge version of itself. No body knows why this spider in the Philippines sculpts a decoy or how 11000 miles away in the Amazon, another spider does the same.

Violence

Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only love can do that.
