  • The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved the use of products containing the weedkiller dicamba for use on cotton and soybeans Tuesday. The EPA announcement means that two products that contain the herbicide found to cause cancer can be registered for five years. It also extended the use of a third product that also has dicamba in it. The EPA said that two canceled dicamba herbicides — XtendiMax and Engenia — will now have a five-year registration. The same five-year extension was granted to the herbicide Tavium. The EPA argued that it provides relief to farmers who were unsure how they would treat their dicamba-resistant cotton and soybean crops. 2018 brought beekeepers forward to denounce the product. The drift problems persisted, unprecedented, and unabated. 2019 was the year of dicamba fatigue. Plant boards were overwhelmed and states’ damage reports fell on deaf ears at the EPA. Monsanto continued blaming applicators. In 2020 in the Bader Farms v Monsanto, documents were presented revealing that Monsanto and BASF knew there would be drift problems in 2015, but conspired to profit anyway. After 3 weeks of grueling testimony, the jury awarded Bader Farms $15 million in actual damages and $250 million in punitive damages. In May, a study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology linked dicamba to increased cancer risk. In June, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals vacated EPA’s dicamba approval, writing, “A review of the record shows that the EPA substantially understated the risks. The review also shows that the EPA entirely failed to acknowledge other risks.” Also in June, Bayer-Monsanto announced a $400 million settlement of wider dicamba injury claims.

  • Prince Andrew has made bombshell accusations against the woman who filed a “frivolous” civil lawsuit against him in a sexual assault case in September. The royal claims money-hungry Virginia Guiffre (née Roberts), is “profiting” from the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, according to court documents filed in a US District Court in Manhattan and cited by the Daily Mail. In the filing made on 29 October, attorneys for Prince Andrew reiterated he “unequivocally denies Giuffre’s false allegations against him.”

  • Ian Maxwell, brother of jailed British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, has raised concerns over whether the woman accused of being the tycoon’s “pimp” would receive a fair trial. “In the court of public opinion…. it seems to me that Ghislaine has already been convicted and the punishment that she is having meted out to her in prison as a pre-trial detainee is precisely what it is. Punishment prior to conviction… I have to really ask myself, are we going to get a fair trial?”

  • The United Kingdom announced on Saturday that it would donate 20 million more Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine doses by the end of the year to countries in need. So far, 10 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine were sent to countries in need as part of the COVAX sharing programme and 10 million more will be sent in the next few weeks. The sent vaccine doses are part of a promised 100 million doses plan for emergency vaccination of people living in some of the world’s most vulnerable countries. “These additional donations mean 30.6 million surplus doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca will have been given to those in need in 2021,” the statement added.

  • Merck & Co (MRK.N) has signed a licensing agreement with the United Nations-backed Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) that will allow more companies to manufacture generic versions of its experimental oral antiviral COVID-19 treatment, the U.S. drugmaker and the organization announced on Wednesday.

  • On Monday, the US State Department accused Moscow of using energy as a weapon, and urged Germany to consider sanctions against Russia over the price crunch. The US has spent weeks blaming Russia for the supply situation, even after spending years sabotaging the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, and cutting down its own gas deliveries to the region. French President Emmanuel Macron has dismissed the suggestion that Russia is responsible for high energy prices in Europe. The French president’s comments come in the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s instructions to Gazprom on Wednesday to boost gas volumes at underground gas storage (UGS) facilities in Austria and Europe after Russia’s own USGs are filled up by 8 November.

  • Doyle and Moynihan, independent expert forensic investigators, testified before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee in December 2018, alleging that the Clinton Foundation owes the US government between $400 million and $2.5 billion in taxes. According to them, the charity did not operate as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organisation but acted as nothing short of a foreign agent. The two forensic investigators said that they had collected approximately 100 exhibits in excess of 6,000 pages to back their claims. The two forensic investigators filed whistleblower submissions with the IRS over the charity’s suspected misdeeds as early as in August 2017. After their request was finally denied by the IRS in February 2019, they filed a lawsuit with the US Tax Court.

News Burst 31 October 2021 - General Lee

General Robert E. Lee

A museum in Virginia is proposing to melt down a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee and use the bronze to create a new work of public art. Organizations backing this proposal (including George Soros’ Open Society) have pledged $590,000 towards the project so far, which has been labelled as a re-contextualization – a rather typically heartwarming and faux-intellectual act of wordsmithing, the neo-liberal way to say “vandalised, destroyed, replaced.”

News Burst 31 October 2021 - Thailand Floating Solar Farm

Thailand

From the shoreline, the newest piece of Thailand’s renewable energy future is just a shimmer in the distance. The pure scale of this ambitious project is difficult to appreciate from afar. Forty years ago, the face of this land was shaped by the construction of the Sirindhorn Dam, a then-controversial project designed to provide hydropower and irrigation water to the area. Once again, enterprise is harnessing nature here. The reservoir is now home to the world’s largest hybrid solar-hydropower project. Installed on the surface of the water are 144,000 separate solar panels, the equivalent of 100 football fields. The 45 megawatts of peak power the project can produce complements the existing dam operations, which can generate an additional 36MW, and provide electricity across three provinces in eastern Thailand.
