  • [Why On The Day Of The Eclipse?] The world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator is set smash protons together on April 8 to search for invisible particles secretly powering our universe. Theories have suggested there are 17 different particle groups and the European Organization for Nuclear Research, better known as CERN, confirmed the existence of one using its Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2012. Now, the team has restarted the LHC with hopes of unraveling more mysteries of the universe – specifically dark matter. A total solar eclipse will take place at the Moon’s ascending node on Monday, April 8, 2024, visible across North America and dubbed the Great North American Eclipse (also Great American Total Solar Eclipse and Great American Eclipse) by some of the media.

  • A new military cooperation deal agreed with Washington will limit Helsinki’s sovereignty, the Finnish Foreign Ministry said on Thursday, advising that its ratification will therefore require a two-thirds majority in the parliament. Finland joined NATO in April 2023, abandoning a decades-long policy of neutrality. It began negotiating a Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) with the US almost immediately, and signed it last December. A working group led by the Foreign Ministry was set up to draft the ratification protocols which were formally sent to the country’s parliament for comments on Thursday, the ministry announced. “The working group concludes that the DCA would restrict Finland’s sovereignty, which is why Parliament’s acceptance of the agreement would require a two-thirds majority of the votes cast,” the ministry press release said. The parliament has until May 12 to comment on the draft proposal.

  • Telegram has clamped down on users that spread calls to commit acts of terrorism, and will implement technological hurdles to limit the activity in the future, the messenger app’s founder, Pavel Durov, wrote on Thursday. Russian-speaking Telegram users have been bombarded with anonymous messages this week, in which strangers attempt to persuade them to commit acts of terrorism, Durov said. The app’s administrators reportedly took steps to deal with this within an hour of receiving the first complaints on Sunday. “As a result, tens of thousands of attempts to send such messages were stopped, and thousands of users participating in this flash mob faced permanent bans of their Telegram accounts,” the Dubai-based entrepreneur said. Starting next week, Russian, Belarusian, and Ukrainian users will be able to limit who is able to send private messages to them, Durov added. Telegram also plans to deploy ‘AI-related’ mechanisms to process complaints faster.

  • The ecosystem of moderators is following the axes of colonialism. Large companies like Meta invest in developing countries to recruit low-cost labor forced to watch all the horror of the web for less than two dollars an hour. Near the slums on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, there is a glass building with a yellow and black sign. “Sama source”, it says on it. Inside, over 200 employees sit for hours in front of their screens projecting suicides, slaughters, rapes and child abuse. It is forbidden to close your eyes, they must look at everything, until the end. Check if and how much blood there is in the video, and accurately label any type of atrocity. All this for less than two dollars an hour.

  • Russian authorities have arrested a suspected “financier” of last week’s deadly concert hall attack, Russia’s top investigative body said Thursday, claiming that Ukraine had paid “large amounts” to the perpetrators. “Another suspect involved in the terrorist financing scheme has been identified and detained,” Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a statement, adding that the person was placed in pre-trial detention. Eight other defendants in the ongoing terrorism probe have been remanded into custody by Moscow’s Basmanny District Court. Russia said Saturday it had arrested 11 people in connection with the Friday evening attack on Crocus City Hall, which saw gunmen open fire and set the music venue ablaze, killing at least 143 people and injuring hundreds more. A first report from the Russian Investigative Committee on the ongoing investigation into the terrorist attack on the Crocus City Hall in Moscow claims that there is evidence of the attackers’ links with Kiev nationalists who financed the plan with cryptocurrencies.

  • A cryptocurrency account allegedly used by the organizer and perpetrators of the Crocus City Hall terrorist attack has been discovered by Sputnik, through which an amount equal to half of what was promised to the terrorists for the attack on the concert venue was transferred. Sputnik has discovered a possible cryptocurrency wallet intermediary in the terrorist attack at Crocus. The link to the account was posted on a Telegram channel titled Voice of Khorasan, associated with the IS [Islamic State] terrorist organization. Transfer data available on the Internet revealed that the address of the wallet on the Tronscan platform first appeared on March 12 in a post on a Telegram channel with an extremist orientation, the administrator of which is a person with the nickname Mavlavi_56, who also runs the Telegram channel Voice of Khorasan. The next day, March 13, the account became active: $2.19 worth of tokens was received in its first transfer. A source previously said that the now-defunct Voice of Khorasan channel was used to recruit the perpetrators of the Crocus City Hall concert venue terrorist attack.

  • Two young men had left their family farms in northwest Myanmar to join a local armed resistance group following the 2021 military coup, hoping to bring peace and democracy to the Southeast Asian country, their fathers told CNN. But they were captured during a battle against the military on November 7 last year, and taken to a nearby village, where they were tortured and killed by a pro-junta militia under the watch of Myanmar army soldiers, according to witnesses. Phoe Tay and Thar Htaung’s deaths are horrific, but they are not anomalies in Myanmar, where the military is waging a war of terror against civilians as it finds itself increasingly on the back foot against a nationwide armed resistance determined to oust it from power.

  • Imprisoned rap mogul Suge Knight opined on recent happenings involving hip-hop rival Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, whose houses in Miami and Los Angeles were raided last Monday by Homeland Security in connection with a federal investigation into sex trafficking, sexual assault, and the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms. “We believe that there is a disturbing history of sex trafficking,” a DHS officer told The NY Post on Thursday, following the raid which resulted in the seizure of hard drives, phones and other evidence. In response to the raid, Death Row Records co-founder Marion Hugh Knight Jr., aka “Suge Knight,” said during a Friday episode of his “Collect Call” prison podcast (!) that Combs needs to watch his back since he has “secrets” involving a “secret room.” “It’s a bad day for hip-hop…for the culture…Black people, because if one looks bad, we all look bad. That’s definitely not nothing to cheer about,” said Knight.

  • A lawsuit filed by a music producer against Sean “Diddy” Combs names several celebrities, including Prince Harry. The lawsuit that names Harry was filed by Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones. In the suit, filed in federal court in New York in February 2024, Jones said that Combs sexually harassed, drugged and threatened him for more than a year while he worked on Combs’ 2023 album. Jones’ lawsuit, which seeks $30 million in damages, alleges that Combs used his known access to celebrities — such as Harry — as a way to give his sex trafficking parties legitimacy. In Jones’ lawsuit, Harry is named just once. “Affiliation with, and or sponsorship of Mr. Combs sex-trafficking parties garnered legitimacy and access to celebrities such as famous athletes, political figures, artist, musicians, and international dignitaries like British Royal, Prince Harry,” the initial filing from Feb. 26, 2024, reads.

  • US President Joe Biden said at a campaign event on Thursday that Arab states, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are ready for a full normalization of ties with Israel. During the event – which was meant to show unity in the Democratic Party ahead of US elections in November this year – Biden was joined on stage by former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. However, Riyadh has doubled down on its demands for concessions to the Palestinians, including, most prominently, the demand for the eventual realization of statehood. Politico reported on the same day as Biden’s campaign event that the White House, State Department, and Pentagon are discussing the potential establishment of either a “multinational force” or a “Palestinian peacekeeping team” to oversee the affairs of a post-war Gaza.

  • The Wall Street Journal comments on Biden’s Free Lunch for Rich Kids. There’s no such thing as a free lunch, but the Biden administration insists otherwise. The U.S. Department of Agriculture plans to provide free lunches to children—including many whose parents earn six-figure incomes—year-round. The White House is now exceeding what Congress intended. In September 2023, the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service finalized a rule that expands the number of students who qualify for reduced lunches during the school year. [New Rule] If a mere 25% of a public school’s students meet the requirements, 100% of its students will be eligible to receive the benefit. The rule imposes no income limits, meaning middle- and upper-class children will get subsidized meals. The Biden administration also is preparing to add the summer months to the expansion.

  • On May 5, 2021, White House press secretary Jen Psaki issued a mob-like warning to social-media companies and information distributors generally. They need to get with the program and start censoring critics of COVID policy. They need to amplify government propaganda. After all, it would be a shame if something would happen to these companies. These were her exact words: “The president’s view is that the major platforms have a responsibility related to the health and safety of all Americans to stop amplifying untrustworthy content, disinformation and misinformation, especially related to Covid-19 vaccinations and elections. And we’ve seen that over the past several months. Broadly speaking, I’m not placing any blame on any individual or group. We’ve seen it from a number of sources. He also supports better privacy protections and a robust antitrust program. So, his view is that there’s more that needs to be done to ensure that this type of misinformation, disinformation, damaging, sometimes life threatening information is not going out to the American public.”

  • We all know the emails: “Dear user, please click the following link to update your credentials. Otherwise your Office 365 account will be disabled.” “Please sign the attached document” or “Please review your payment information.” And while many of those emails look legitimate at first glance, it’s always worth taking a closer look, because more often than not emails like the above are phishing attempts. As Statista’s Felix Richter reports, phishing is among the most common cyber attacks, targeting both individuals and companies. The consequences of successful phishing attacks can be severe, ranging from loss of confidential information or intellectual property to breach of customer data or ransomware infection. Any of those outcomes can result in financial and reputational damages, which is why any organization should train its employees on the constantly evolving threat landscape.

  • Prosecutors representing the United States, whether by design or incompetence, refused — in the two-day hearing I attended in London in February — to provide guarantees that Julian Assange would be afforded First Amendment rights and would be spared the death penalty if extradited to the U.S. If Julian is extradited, he will stand trial for allegedly violating 17 counts of the 1917 Espionage Act, with a potential sentence of 170 years, along with another charge for “conspiracy to commit computer intrusion” carrying an additional five years. The court, by asking the U.S. for assurances that Julian would be granted First Amendment rights in the U.S. courts and not be subject to the death penalty, offered the U.S. an easy out — give the guarantees and the appeal is rejected.

  • Cocoa prices rose to a record $10,000 per ton on Tuesday, the first time the commodity broke above this mark. The cost of cocoa has skyrocketed, more than doubling (+133%) since January, spurred on by the sharpest supply constraints in 40 years. Adverse weather conditions and disease hit cocoa output in Ivory Coast and Ghana, the world’s largest producers, accounting for about 70 percent of production. Also, inadequate road infrastructure poses challenges in ferrying the existing beans to the port, according to a report by the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO). Ivorian government data released on Monday revealed that its cocoa farmers shipped 1.28 million metric tons (MMT) of the bean to ports between October 1, 2023, and March 24, 2024, a 28 percent decline from the same period last year. On March 7, the country’s cocoa sector regulator anticipated that Ivory Coast’s mid-crop, which begins in April, would experience a 33-percent plunge to 400,000 from last year’s 600,000 metric tons (MT).

  • The findings, published in Science, pioneered the initial connection between nighttime brain activity and corresponding daytime behavior in the hippocampus – part of the brain involved in emotion, learning, and short- and long-term memory. Neuroscientists have found that reflecting on life events shortly after they occur increases the likelihood of etching them into long-term memory. The study’s lead author, Dr. Gyorgy Buzsaki, a Briggs professor of neuroscience at NYU Langone Health, four other NYU researchers, and a data analyst from the Mila-Quebec AI Institute, focused on the hippocampus. According to the study team, reflecting on an event shortly after it occurs can enhance the formation of long-term memories, even though the brain’s unconscious bursts of electrical activity are responsible for this process.

  • At the end of January, the British Museum and Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum announced that more than 30 Asante ‘crown jewels’, gold artifacts that once belonged to the royals of Asante (or Ashanti) in modern-day Ghana, would be brought to the Ghanaian city of Kumasi in April. This, however, is only a loan deal between the UK museums and the Ghanaian Manhyia Palace Museum. British laws ban museums from permanently returning contested artifacts to their original owners, which means that despite the announced ‘repatriation’, the golden items, illegally extracted some 150 years ago, will only be temporarily placed in Ghana. Will they ever be returned for good?

  • Nearly 200 people made multiple trips to disgraced financier Jeffry Epstein’s Caribbean island between 2016 and before his final arrest in 2019, according to data obtained by Wired. The convicted sex offender trafficked and assaulted minors and women on to Little Saint James, where he would also invite influential and wealthy individuals, earning it the nickname ‘pedophile island’. A document newly uncovered by Wired cites mobile data provided by Near Intelligence that pinpoints the locations of up to 166 potential visitors or victims, from across the US and the world. Many of the coordinates mapped by Near Intelligence lead to multimillion-dollar homes in the US. Others trace to lower-income areas where Epstein’s victims are known to have lived and attended school, including parts of West Palm Beach, Florida.

  • A new investigation into a rare and short-lived type of galaxy has revealed that such objects harbor slumbering supermassive black holes that briefly awaken to rip apart a massive star and devour its remains as a giant cosmic breakfast. “Compact Symmetric Objects,” or CSOs, are active galaxies that have two jets blasting out from them at nearly the speed of light. These jets are common to active galactic nuclei (AGN), which have supermassive black holes feeding on surrounding gas and dust at their hearts — but the jets of CSOs are different. While jets from AGNs can extend for 230,000 light-years in both directions, CSO jets are stunted, stretching for just 1,500 light-years or so. Scientists had previously theorized that CSO jets are short because they are newly formed or young. Now, a team led by California Institute of Technology (Caltech) scientists has determined that these jets simply have short lifetimes.

  • Scientists spotted the solar flare erupting from the bottom of the sun on Thursday (March 28), using satellites from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), according to the organization’s Space Weather Prediction Center. The flare, which peaked at 4:56 p.m. ET, was categorized as an X1.1 flare. X-class flares are the most powerful type of explosion the sun can produce, according to NASA. The explosion was so powerful that it ionized the top of Earth’s atmosphere, resulting in a “deep shortwave radio blackout over the Pacific Ocean,” SpaceWeather.com reported.

News Burst 31 March 2024 - Yakhchāl

The Yakhchāl, also known as an ice pit, is an ancient refrigeration structure that was used in Persia (modern-day Iran) around 400 BC. These structures were designed to store and preserve ice and food in the hot and arid climate of the region. The Yakhchāls were a remarkable example of ancient engineering and design, serving as natural refrigerators long before the invention of modern cooling technology. The technology and design of the Yakhchāl reflected the ingenuity and understanding of natural cooling principles by ancient engineers and architects. ~ #archaeohistories
