- Major oil companies have made record profits as a result of the conflict in Ukraine and should pay to rebuild the country’s war-torn infrastructure, Ukrainian Minister of Energy German Galushchenko said on Wednesday in an interview with Politico. According to Galushchenko, oil and gas majors have generated windfall profits of more than $200 billion due to wild swings in global energy prices, and should transfer some of those funds to Ukraine.
- Saudi Arabia is leaning closer to the East and eyeing stronger cooperation within organizations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to gain strong momentum for future development, experts said as the country approved a memorandum on granting the kingdom the status of a dialogue partner in the SCO. Saudi Arabia has expressed frequently it is highly interested in joining China-led multilateral frameworks, such as the SCO and “BRICS plus.” The SCO is a political and security union of countries spanning much of Eurasia, including China, India and Russia, read the report. Formed in 2001 by Russia, China and former Soviet states in Central Asia, the body has been expanded to include India and Pakistan, with a view to playing a bigger role as counterweight to Western influence in the region. Iran also signed documents for full membership last year, Reuters reported.
- A drag queen performed a lap dance for a student in front of cheering children at a Pride event for high schoolers. The dancer, identified as Erica Chanel, was seen gyrating on top of the student at Forsyth Technical Community College, which is a public school located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. As the video pans around the room of cheering spectators, children, no older than elementary school age, can be seen in attendance. The event was open to all students on campus, including high school students.
- A US-born 8-year-old Mongolian boy has been named as the reincarnation of the third most important spiritual leader in Buddhism by the Dalai Lama, reported The Independent. The spiritual leader was pictured with the boy during a ceremony recognising him as the 10th Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoche, according to The Times. The ceremony took place in Dharamshala, the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, where the Dalai Lama, 87, lives in exile. “We have the reincarnation of Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoché of Mongolia with us today,” Dalai Lama said during the ceremony.
- Russia was able to bail out its funds from the US and trick Washington into paying off its debts. This was written by economic analysts in an article for the Sohu publication, PolitRussia reports . US government debt recently surpassed a whopping $31 trillion. Washington lends to many countries, which allows it to continue spending almost unlimited amounts of money. Some time ago, the US Federal Reserve updated information on the country’s foreign creditors, revealing a curious moment, Sohu analysts write. As of January 2023, Russia’s investment in US Treasuries is $67 million. Interestingly, in December last year, the Russian investment figure was $629 million, and in January it was only $67 million. As the authors of the article write, a few years ago Russia was one of the countries with the largest investments in US public debt. While previous Russian investments were estimated at $170 billion, after 2014 Moscow began to rapidly get rid of US Treasury bills. ~ Michail Terentiev
- US President Joe Biden has announced an additional $690 million in spending on what he described as efforts to support democracy around the world, as well as plans to secure a further $9.5 billion from Congress for the same purpose. Much of the money will go through a new bureau to be created within the US Agency for International Development, he said on Wednesday. In a fact sheet accompanying the announcement, Washington described several areas in which it says American taxpayers’ money will help strengthen democracy abroad. The list of causes includes supporting “free and independent media,” strengthening “information integrity,” fighting corruption by having the US Treasury “unmask shell companies,” bolstering “human rights and democratic reformers” and defending “free and fair elections.”
- Beijing and Brasilia have signed an agreement on trade in mutual currencies, abandoning the US dollar as an intermediary, and are also planning to expand cooperation on food and minerals. According to media reports, the deal will enable the two BRICS members to conduct their massive trade and financial transactions directly, exchanging renminbi for real and vice versa, instead of using the US dollar for settlements. “The expectation is that this will reduce costs… promote even greater bilateral trade and facilitate investment,” AFP quoted the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency as saying on Wednesday.
- The US military has identified the serviceman found dead in a vehicle near the Pentagon earlier this month, revealing he was a senior intelligence specialist working in the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The army officer was named as Master Sgt. Juan Paulo Ferrer Bordador, 42, who was discovered in his car in the Pentagon’s north parking lot following a welfare check on March 14, Army officials said on Wednesday. While an emergency crew responded soon after the officer was spotted, he was already dead by the time they arrived. Since 2021, Bordador served as the noncommissioned officer leading the Joint Chiefs’ Technical Surveillance Countermeasure program – a team which works to identify and thwart attempted espionage by foreign states.
- A powerful explosion from the Sun ionized the top layer of Earth’s atmosphere and led to a strong shortwave radio blackout over southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. The flare erupted from sunspot AR3256 near the southwestern limb of the star in our Solar System. The eruption was captured by Nasa’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, which watches the Sun. This flare was classified as an X1.2 flare. X-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength.
- In a galaxy at the center of a massive cluster named Abell 1201, some 2.7 billion light-years away, lurks a cosmic colossus. Not content with being supermassive, the monster is an ultramassive black hole, clocking in at around 32.7 billion times the mass of the Sun. The new figure exceeds previous estimates by at least 7 billion solar masses, demonstrating the power of curved light for measuring masses with precision. “This particular black hole, which is roughly 30 billion times the mass of our Sun, is one of the biggest ever detected and on the upper limit of how large we believe black holes can theoretically become, so it is an extremely exciting discovery,” explains physicist James Nightingale of Durham University in the UK.
