  • Worries for a lone polar bear cub that walked into the remote Arctic port of Dikson. The young polar bear has been in the remote settlement for around four days, lately close to a boiler room. A leading animal expert fears it will die without help. ‘The bear just lies in one place, unless dogs bother it’, said Andrey Gorban, director of Roev Ruchey Zoo, who is monitoring the situation. ‘Once the dogs get too annoyng, the cub chases them away and lies back down – hoping for its mother to be back.’

  • Officials in Moscow have issued a sternly-worded ultimatum to YouTube’s parent company, Google, saying the video streaming site could face restrictions after it took down two channels run by RT’s German-language service. In the statement, released on Wednesday morning, the country’s national media regulator, Roskomnadzor, said that it “demands all restrictions be lifted from the YouTube channels RT DE and Der Fehlende Part (DFP), run by the news outlet RT, as soon as possible.” According to the authorities, failure to do so would be a violation of Russian law and, “for such actions, an internet resource can be designated as breaching fundamental human rights and freedoms,” and can face a formal warning.

  • “As record numbers of migrants cross the English Channel, the UK and French governments must put together a plan to stem the flow – or we face the very real prospect of horrific scenes on our beaches over the next few months. It was a dreadful situation, because although our hearts went out to those who had perished in the Mediterranean, we also knew that the only way to prevent more deaths was to impose policies that discouraged the migrants from making the journey in the first place. Of course, this was undermined by Angela Merkel’s disastrous idea to invite the migrants who were crossing the Mediterranean to make their way to Germany.”  ~ Paul A. Nuttall

  • YouTube’s censorship of two German-language RT channels is part of ongoing ‘aggression’ against the outlet with both tacit and overt approval from Berlin, and will be met with reprisals, the Russian Foreign Ministry has warned. The Google-owned video platform deleted RT DE and Der Fehlende Part (DFP) channels on Tuesday, saying they attempted to circumvent a ‘community guidelines’ strike for ‘medical misinformation’ in four videos.

  • A detachment of warships and troops from the Arctic group of Russia’s Northern Fleet has completed a tactical exercise simulating an amphibious enemy landing party on an archipelago of islands in the remote Siberian Far North. Conducted last week, the exercise focused on the Laptev Sea, which is part of the Arctic Ocean. One of the islands in the area, called Kotelny, is the home to the 99th Tactical Group, which has built a runway, pier and accommodations for personnel. Its airbase is known as ‘Northern Clover.’

  • South Koreans eat around a million dogs a year, but dog meat could be taken off the menu if pooch-loving President Moon Jae-in gets his way. “Hasn’t the time come to prudently consider prohibiting dog meat consumption?” Moon asked his prime minister.

  • A spanish human rights group placed billboards in cities nationwide, apparently listing hardcore drugs and young Russian women for sale as part of a campaign. The adverts, posted last week to mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, feature a restaurant-style whiteboard offering a special dish of “Russian virgins and cocaine.” Other listings include “Katia, 17 years old,” and “Sophia, 20 years old,” for €50 each ($58). Would-be punters are also told that for an extra fee, they can smoke cannabis, snort banned narcotics and dispense with the use of a condom. The organization that placed the ads, Asociación NUEVA VIDA, describes them as part of efforts to “abolish prostitution,” evidently aiming to shock viewers into supporting an end to the exploitation of trafficked women. Supporters are challenged to find the marketing materials in the street and upload the supposed menu of teenage girls with the caption “do not buy.”

  • Scholars studying the Dead Sea Scrolls have been unable to explain why over 15,000 pieces of the more than 900 original ancient documents were concealed in caves near Qumran, in the Judean Desert in Israel, so far from any major settlements. An ancient Hebrew document dating back over 1,000 years may help scholars unravel a mystery linked to the Dead Sea Scrolls found in caves around Qumran, according to researchers at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. As Vainstub and his team researched the document, they claim to have discovered that it shows Qumran, in the Judean Desert, west of the Dead Sea, in Israel, was the site of an annual ceremony known as the Covenant of Renewal. This was where an ancient, mystical Jewish sect known as the Essenes gathered from across Israel.

  • Skyrocketing gas prices have already knocked several British energy suppliers out of business and prompted concerns of potential food shortages in British supermarkets ahead of Christmas. However, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson asserted to Sky News last week that Britain’s energy crisis is a “short-term problem” and that he does not think there will be disruption to food supplies during the winter holidays.

  • CNN released a statement to The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age in which it explained that it previously asked Facebook to disable the comments section under their posts but was turned down. “We are disappointed that Facebook, once again, has failed to ensure its platform is a place for credible journalism and productive dialogue around current events among its users,” the media company said as quoted by the Herald. On 8 September, media organisations in Australia lost a High Court case that saw them go against a former Northern Territory youth detainee Dylan Voller who argued that media outlets hold responsibility for third-party comments under their articles posted on their public Facebook pages.

  • On Monday, Senate Republicans blocked legislation to raise the debt ceiling and allow the US to avoid an impending government shutdown and possible default. On Tuesday, the GOP also pooh-poohed a proposal by Democrats to allow for the debt ceiling to be raised with a simple majority vote, instead of the 60 vote supermajority ordinarily needed. The United States is hurtling toward the historically unprecedented prospect of defaulting on tens of trillions of dollars in debt as government funding is set to expire on 30 September, the end of the current fiscal year. On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the government was on track to running out of money by 18 October if the borrowing limit was not raised soon. “It would be disastrous for the American economy, [the] global financial market and millions of families and workers whose financial security would be jeopardised by a delay in payments,” Yellen said at a hearing in Washington. Yellen suggested that a collapse of investors’ faith in the US’ ability to pay its bills would send shocks through markets throughout the world, pushing borrowing costs to jump through the roof and threatening the dollar’s status as the world’s de facto reserve currency.
