- After initially rejecting nuclear-powered submarines, the municipal council in Tromsø, Norway’s largest city above the Polar Circle, has made a startling U-turn despite popular protests, since the harbour in Tromsø is a municipal one, it falls under the reception obligation and has a duty to accept all types of allied warships. The municipal council voiced concern about fulfilling Norway’s obligations as a member of NATO, and pledged to facilitate the allied presence in the High North in general and the municipality in particular.
- Rasmus Paludan, the leader of the Danish ethno-nationalist party Hard Line, has been arrested in Germany after entering the country in an attempt to hold a demonstration, the Danish newspaper BT reported. Paludan, who advocates a ban on Islam and the deportation of non-ethnic Danes from his country, previously wrote in a Facebook post that he on Wednesday intended to hold a demonstration at in Berlin’s Neukölln, a multicultural neighbourhood where many Muslims live. On Tuesday, however, he was prevented from entering Germany at Tegel Airport in Berlin.
- Convicted sex felon Jeffrey Epstein was allegedly “emboldened” to commit his crimes after observing former US president Bill Clinton “get away with” the Monica Lewinsky affair. An unnamed actress who was friends with Epstein in the 1980s is cited by Mother Jones as saying: “Seeing a powerful guy like Clinton get away with what he got away with… I think it just emboldened him to think he could do whatever he wanted.” In 1998, then-President Clinton was impeached after it emerged he had embarked upon an affair in November 1995 with a 21-year old unpaid intern, Monica Lewinsky. Over the course of a year and a half, the president and Lewinsky had nearly a dozen sexual encounters in the White House. Clinton was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice, yet was acquitted after a 21-day Senate trial.
- Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia have agreed to continue negotiations in a bid to finalise a draft accord on the disputed Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation said at the end of tripartite consultations held on Tuesday. Ethiopia has long been deadlocked in the Nile dam dispute with Sudan and Egypt, which fear that Addis Ababa’s mega hydroelectric project, which has been under construction since 2011, would reduce their access to water. The talks between the three countries are being mediated by South Africa, the current holder of the AU chairmanship.
- Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC) announced on Monday the resumption of work at all of the country’s oil fields and ports following the lifting of a force majeure event at the El Feel oil station. “The National Oil Company announces the lifting of force majeure at the El Feel oil field and … the overall lifting of the blockade imposed on all Libyan oil fields and ports”, the company said in a statement published on Facebook. According to the statement, production activities at the El Feel oil field have already been authorized in a bid “to gradually restore an adequate level of production over the next few days”. Most of Libya’s oil fields and ports were last closed since January due to the blockade of oil facilities amid hostilities.
- “The transfer of long-range missiles from Iran to Venezuela is not acceptable to the United States and will not be tolerated or permitted,” Elliott Abrams, the State Department Special Representative for Iran and Venezuela, was quoted as saying. While not elaborating whether there was any information pointing to the imminent possibility of such shipments, Abrams claimed that as Iran earlier announced its intention to engage in arms sales, Venezuela was “an obvious target” since the two “pariah regimes already have a relationship”. “Venezuela is paying in gold to buy gasoline from Iran, and there is an Iranian presence in the country. Venezuela’s economy has collapsed, so every bar of gold for Iran is tens of thousands of dollars the Venezuelan people need for food and medicine,” said the US representative for Iran.
- Domestic violence campaigners have reacted angrily after a disgraced police officer was jailed for just 10 years for killing his lover. On Tuesday, 27 October, Timothy Brehmer, 41, was acquitted of murdering Claire Parry, and on Wednesday he was jailed for 10 and a half years for manslaughter, an offence which he had admitted. Brehmer insisted he had simply been trying to stop her getting out of the car and had not intended to kill her. The jury at his trial at Salisbury Crown Court was told Brehmer was known as a “man whore” and a “sexual predator” among his colleagues and was known to prey on “vulnerable” emergency workers.
- A United Kingdom’s Conservative MP has been roundly criticised on Wednesday for children being sent to school hungry are the result of having “chaotic parents”. Mr Penrose, whose wife Baroness Dido Harding heads the NHS Test and Trace and also serves as the government’s ‘Anti-Corruption Champion’, slammed parents who send their children to school without breakfast, arguing that people should address the origins of poverty and criticised “sticking plaster” responses that “increase dependency” on government support. “Practical measures which make a genuine difference to the causes of poverty include things like the Pupil Premium, which gives schools extra funding for disadvantaged pupils; breakfast clubs, which help children with chaotic parents who send them to school without breakfast so they can’t concentrate properly”, he wrote.
- Typhoon Molave hit villages as it made landfall a day earlier, tearing roofs from homes and bringing heavy rain to an area already badly affected by weeks of flooding. Hundreds of rescuers were desperately trying to reach survivors after several landslides but were blocked by thick mud and fallen trees. Nineteen bodies had so far been pulled from the mud across three hard-hit villages in Quang Nam province, state media reported. Authorities said another 45 people were believed to be buried in the area.
- When Australia’s elite SAS soldiers would raid villages in Afghanistan, they brought terror and death with them, a report seen by Melbourne newspaper The Age alleges. The special forces “would take the men and boys to these guest houses and interrogate them, meaning tie them up and torture them,” the report states. By the time the SAS units left, “the men and boys would be found dead, shot in the head, sometimes blindfolded and throats slit. The report was compiled by defense consultant Samantha Crompvoets is based on interviews with soldiers and whistleblowers, who told Cormpvoets some grizzly tales of “competition killing and blood lust.”
