- Twitter has said it will no longer enforce its coronavirus misinformation policy, according to an update on the platform’s Covid-19 transparency page that went largely unnoticed since it was posted last week. The move came as its new owner Elon Musk announced a “general amnesty” for previously suspended accounts. The misinformation policy was initially developed in 2020 amid the outbreak of Covid-19 and was meant to combat “harmful” misleading posts about the coronavirus, government policies aimed at curbing its spread, and related vaccines. Users who violated the rule received strikes. After two or three strikes, their accounts were suspended for 12 hours. After four, they would be locked out for a week, while offenders with more than five strikes were permanently banned from the platform. According to statistics published by Twitter itself, between January 2020 and September 2022, the platform’s moderators challenged over 11.72 million accounts and suspended more than 11,000 for violating the rule. They also scrubbed nearly 100,000 pieces of content worldwide under the policy. The extensive moderation policy became a topic of heated debate. Some called for more censorship of posts deemed to be harmful, while others argued this constituted suppression of free speech.
- The authorities in Australia’s largest state, New South Wales (NSW), have said that they will withdraw or refund tens of thousands of fines issued for violations of restrictions during the pandemic. The move follows a defeat that the NSW government suffered in a court battle against free advocacy group Redfern Legal Centre on Tuesday. The group launched a test case in July on behalf of three plaintiffs, arguing their fines of between AUS$1,000 ($673) to AUS$3,000 ($2,020) were invalid because the penalty notices didn’t describe the offense sufficiently. “It’s not a big ask, if you’re going to fine someone for an offense, to set out what the offense is in the notice,” Katherine Richardson, the lawyer for the plaintiffs argued at the New South Wales Supreme Court, as cited by the Sydney Morning Herald.

According to a district official, Boonlert Thintapthai, the monks were then taken to a health centre for drug rehabilitation. The monks were allegedly taken from the temple on Monday after police gave urine tests. Thailand is a key methamphetamine transit country. - Five major news outlets, including the New York Times, have called on the Biden administration to drop charges against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Obtaining and publishing “sensitive information,” they wrote, “is a core part of the daily work of journalists.” The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, and El Pais all published details from diplomatic cables obtained by WikiLeaks in 2010. - Thousands of art objects were seized by the British 125 years ago during a raid on the Kingdom of Benin, in what is now modern-day Nigeria. The artifacts eventually made their way into museums and private collections all over the world. Recently, the West African nation has intensified its efforts to have these cultural items returned. The Horniman Museum, a small museum in south-east London which houses a collection of 72 artifacts that were looted from Benin City in 1897, officially handed over ownership of six items to the Nigerian government on Monday. According to the agreement between the NCMM and the Horniman, the remaining 66 cultural items will stay in Britain on loan for the next 12 months; a second phase of repatriations is expected in the future.
- Fossil fragments of what once was the dinosaur in question, Daspletosaurus wilsoni (named after the man who discovered the holotype specimen, John Wilson), were originally discovered in the US state of Montana, at the Judith River Formation from a site discovered in 2017. Having managed to extract the fragments from underneath solid rock, paleontologists in the US now postulate that this dinosaur existed over 76 million years ago and belonged to the family Tyrannosauridae – the family that includes Tyrannosaurus rex. “The description of this taxon provides insight into evolutionary mode in Tyrannosaurinae, lending strength to previous hypotheses of anagenesis within Daspletosaurus and increasing the resolution with which the evolution of this lineage can be reconstructed,” the researchers write in a paper published last week in Paleontology and Evolutionary Science.
- Researchers probing a meteorite found in Somalia in 2020 have discovered two minerals never before seen outside of a laboratory. The minerals, dubbed elaliite and elkinstantonite, were found in the El Ali iron meteorite by researchers at the University of Alberta in Canada. The two minerals had only ever been observed after being synthesized in a lab, and never before spotted in nature. The El Ali meteorite is massive, measuring 16.5 tons, and is categorized as an IAB iron meteorite, meaning its meteoric iron is different from that found here on Earth – it exists in a pure metallic state instead of inside of ore, is often alloyed with nickel, and flecked with bits of silica. It was inside the silica that the new minerals were found.
- The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has produced the most detailed information ever on an exoplanet, making it the world we know most about after the eight major planets of our Solar System. Observations of the planet, called WASP-39b, reveal patchy clouds, an intriguing chemical reaction in its atmosphere, and provide hints about its formation. “We’ve studied lots of planets before,” says Laura Kreidberg, director of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany, and part of the observation team. “But we’ve never seen a data set like this.” The team posted five papers on its findings on the arXiv preprint server on 22 November. WASP-39b is a ‘hot Jupiter’ located 215 parsecs (700 light years) from Earth. The gas giant is about one-third the mass of Jupiter but is closer in composition to Saturn. It orbits its host star in just four Earth days and is eight times closer to it than Mercury is to the Sun, making it incredibly hot at nearly 900 ºC. This proximity, and its consequent brightness, makes the planet inhospitable to life as we know it. But it also made it the “perfect target” for the JWST to observe at an early stage in its operational life, enabling it to test its exoplanet capabilities, says Kreidberg.
