  • Four people have been arrested in connection with the 2018 crash of a helicopter that killed a central Mexican governor and her husband — who had preceded her as governor — authorities said Friday. The Agusta 109 helicopter crashed in flames 10 minutes after takeoff on Dec. 24 that year while carrying newly installed Puebla Gov. Martha Erika Alonso and her husband, former Gov. Rafael Moreno Valle, as well as three other people. The Puebla state prosecutor’s office said the four suspects worked for Rotor Flight Services, a company “related to the functioning of the aircraft.” It said the suspects were accused of culpable homicide, damage to another’s property and false testimony.

  • A New Jersey beach is the final resting place for a 15-ton whale whose lifeless body washed ashore on Christmas day. State and local officials used heavy equipment to bury the 31-foot male humpback whale on a beach Monday morning. The whale was frozen solid and could not be cut into pieces for removal, as is commonly done in other cases in which dead whales wash ashore.

  • In recent years, the UAE, with Dubai in particular, has established itself as one of the largest and fastest-growing marketplaces for the gold, with imports rising by 58 percent per annum to more than $27bn in 2018, according to data collated by the Observatory for Economic Complexity. With no local gold to tap, unlike neighboring Saudi Arabia, the UAE has to import gold from wherever it can, whether it be legitimately, smuggled with no questions asked, sourced from conflict zones, or linked to organized crime.

  • Spain is to set up a registry of people who refuse to be vaccinated against wuhan virus and share it with other European Union nations, the health minister has said. Salvador Illa said the list would not be made accessible to the public or to employers. He said the way to defeat the virus was “to vaccinate all of us – the more the better”.

  • On Saturday, an old lady in Kazan who has beaten Covid-19 was discharged from hospital after celebrating her 101st birthday. Doctors say the woman pulled through thanks to her positive attitude – and she has some advice to share. The pensioner, named Mariam Nadershina, was admitted to a hospital in the capital of Russia’s Tatarstan Republic with moderate symptoms, including a cough, a high temperature, and mild breathing problems. Despite her advanced age, Nadershina recovered after just eight days, and celebrated her 101st birthday in hospital on December 25.

  • SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has asserted that any would-be economy on Mars could use digital currencies as a primary means of financial exchange. Writing in a Twitter thread started by AI researcher Lex Fridman, Musk agreed with the notion that a Martian economy “will run on crypto”, proposing the arguably promising cryptocurrency Dogecoin or the fringe one Marscoin as alternatives.

  • Brazilian activists have voiced alarm over their government’s plans to bulldoze a 94-mile highway through a biodiverse corner of the Amazon along the border with Peru that is home to at least three indigenous communities. The planned road is an extension of the BR-364, a 2,700-mile highway that links São Paulo with the Amazon state of Acre, and would connect the town of Cruzeiro do Sul with the Peruvian border town of Pucallpa. Opponents fear it could have catastrophic consequences for Brazil’s environment, which is already reeling under Bolsonaro as the rate of Amazon deforestation soars to its highest level in more than a decade.

  • US President Donald Trump for the first time edged out former President Barack Obama as the most admired man in America, a new Gallup poll showed on Tuesday. “Trump tied former President Barack Obama for the honour last year but edged out his predecessor this year. Trump’s first-place finish ends a 12-year run as the most admired man for Obama, tied with Dwight Eisenhower for the most ever,” Gallup said in a press release.

  • The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Crivella, has been detained and charged in a case centred on alleged corruption. The detention took place on Tuesday morning in a joint operation of the police and the public prosecution of Rio de Janeiro’s office. Apart from the mayor, the police detained businessmen Rafael Alves, Adenor Goncalves dos Santos and former police chief Fernando Moraes. Former senator Eduardo Lopes was also a target of the operation, but he was not found at his home in Rio de Janeiro. Lopes reportedly moved to Belem. The police are investigating an alleged “bribe headquarters” of Rio de Janeiro city hall. The investigation began in 2018.

  • The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) under the Justice Department have conducted a special operation to uncover a criminal [CIA] network that was engaged in trafficking cocaine from South America to Russia and Europe. a special operation made possible due to the protocols established between the Russian Federation and the United States shortly after President Donald Trump came to power, that were put in place during the historic and unprecedented visit to Washington D.C. of Russia’s top three intelligence directors—a special operation that was immediately followed by Russia blacklisting Germany’s top security and intelligence officials, who will be denied entry to the country for their drug smuggling involvement with the CIA.

  • Pulitzer Prize winning investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald: “The COVID-driven centralization of economic power and information control in the hands of a few corporate monopolies poses enduring threats to political freedom.” “Asserting that Donald Trump is a fascist-like dictator threatening the previously sturdy foundations of U.S. democracy has been a virtual requirement over the last four years to obtain entrance to cable news Green Rooms, sinecures as mainstream newspaper columnists, and popularity in faculty lounges…Yet it has proven to be a preposterous farce”.

  • “I’m not saying COVID is not real, I am saying I’m not sick…I’m not sick and asymptomatic spread has shown to be a myth…So why am I treated like a sick person?…I’m a healthy person…I’m not crazy…This is a psychosis, for everyone to put all this stuff on their face when they’re healthy is insanity…This is a lie and everyone’s buying it… I am done…Tonight I reached a breaking point and I am done”. A young mother confronted for not wearing a mask.
