  • It was found by chance off the coast of Greenland. The scientists initially thought they had arrived at Oodaaq, an island discovered by a Danish survey team in 1978, a University of Copenhagen statementExternal link released on Friday said. Only later, when checking the exact location, they realised that they had in fact visited another island 780 metres northwest. The newly discovered and unnamed island is around 30 by 60 metres in size and is around three to four metres above sea level.

  • Hurricane Ida, which is expected to strike Louisiana as a life-threatening Category 4 storm with wind speeds of 140 mph, will be one of the strongest to hit the state since at least the 1850s, Gov. John Bel Edwards said during an afternoon briefing.

  • Roscosmos head Dmitry Rogozin has warned that the US might attempt to install nuclear weapons in space under the pretext of terraforming Mars. One of the Mars-colonisation concepts, terraforming is the hypothetical process of changing the conditions on a planet to make it habitable for life that exists on Earth, including humans.

  • Leaders of the Islamist group, which took control of Afghanistan in the wake of US and NATO forces pulling out, have been telling farmers in the southern province of Kandahar to stop cultivating opium poppies, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing local residents. Farmers are unhappy but have no choice but to comply should the Taliban begin to enforce the ban, the outlet cites a Kandahar grower as saying. “We can’t oppose the Taliban’s decision. They are the government,” said a farmer.

  • Kamala Harris has become the most unpopular US vice president since at least the 1970s just after six months she got into the administration, according to polls.

  • A batch of COV19-19 vaccines manufactured by Moderna Inc. not covered by those suspended by the health ministry due to contamination fears turned out to be tainted, Okinawa prefectural authorities said late Aug. 28. Officials said small black particles were detected in an opened vaccine vial as well as in two syringes loaded with the vaccine during the afternoon of Aug. 28.

  • Not surprisingly, more than 60 years following the introduction of Toyota Motor Corp.’s iconic 40 Series SUV Land Cruiser, some of the vehicle’s components have become difficult to procure. For that reason, 40 Series owners reached out to Toyota out of concerns that their vehicles “will be no longer able to run.” So that drivers can continue to “operate their beloved automobiles safely and securely,” Toyota decided to reintroduce spare parts for the series next year.

  • Cambodian citizen Ny Nak was sentenced to 18 months in prison for creating a Facebook post criticizing Prime Minister Hun Sen. On December 7, 2020, Nak posted that he intended to declare a “state of emergency” in his chicken coop — appearing to mimic a speech Hun Sen made the same day. He was arrested by the police on December 12 and charged with “insult” and “incitement.” He was denied bail in January and convicted on August 19. Ny Nak is an agricultural entrepreneur who often posted critical comments on the government’s policies on his popular personal Facebook page.

  • The Lower Sesan 2 hydroelectric scheme was completed in northeast Cambodia in 2018. The reservoir flooded 300 square kilometers (116 square miles) upstream of the confluence of the Sesan and Srepok rivers, two tributaries of the Mekong. Villages, places of worship, ancestral burial grounds and forests were submerged, and nearly 5,000 people were displaced. A recent report from U.S.-based advocacy group Human Rights Watch last week assessed the impact of the Chinese-financed project as a human rights “disaster” for the communities that lost their homes and livelihoods. “The Lower Sesan 2 dam washed away the livelihoods of Indigenous and ethnic minority communities who previously lived communally and mostly self-sufficiently from fishing, forest-gathering, and agriculture.”

  • A Tibetan teenager named Sherab Dorjee was taken into custody on August 16 by Chinese police in Trotsik Township, Ngaba County, reportedly for his refusal to attend a Chinese propaganda meeting organized by the government, according to Tibet Watch. Local sources have also said that Sherab may have also been targeted for requesting Tibetan language in their curriculum. The Chinese authorities on August 14 held a propaganda meeting for young Tibetans and later arrested the 19-year-old with few other students but they were all released afterwards except Dorjee. The meeting was called for “praising the Communist Party of China and education on the security agenda.” He had previously submitted a petition to the education authorities urging his school to be allowed to teach in Tibetan language.

  • The Bank of Laos (BOL) has issued a notice warning the public about the usage of unregulated cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin, which are not connected to actual currency reserves. According to the notice, citizens of Laos are prohibited by law from purchasing or selling cryptocurrencies, and people must consider the risks associated with them before making any investment or purchasing such products. It states that Cryptocurrencies are not real currency, and should not be used to pay off debts. This is due to the fact that cryptocurrencies do not satisfy the requirements for usage as money and are currently unregulated in Laos, according to the notice. Despite the previous notice, some Lao businesses continue to accept cryptocurrencies as payment for products and services, as well as advertise investment or trading in digital currencies.

  • American billionaire and philanthropist Bill Gates has congratulated India for reaching a “tremendous milestone” by administering a record number of COVID vaccine doses in a single day – 10 million. The Microsoft co-founder tagged the Twitter handles of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and called the milestone a result of “collective efforts of the government, R&D community, vaccine manufacturers, and millions of health workers.”
