- Former US President Donald Trump posted a brief message on Truth Social late Thursday for the first time since the app he founded launched two months ago, saying “I’M BACK!” Trump broke his silence as Elon Musk sealed a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, which last year permanently banned Trump. Since the deal was announced this week, Trump has said he would not return to Twitter.
- Authorities in the city of Turku, the former capital of Finland, have said they will remove a statue of Russian revolutionary, politician and philosopher Vladimir Lenin due to Russia’s special operation in Ukraine. The Lenin bust located in central Turku in front of the Turku Art Museum will will be removed “as soon as possible” alongside the accompanying plaque reading “V.I. Lenin visited this house while fleeing tsarist Russia in 1907”. According to Turku Mayor Minna Arve of the liberal-conservative National Coalition Party, she made the decision following repeated public and media discussions about the statue in light of the conflict in Ukraine.
- US President Joe Biden has repeatedly claimed he knew nothing of the business dealings of his son Hunter, who currently faces federal prosecution for alleged tax fraud, money laundering and illegal foreign lobbying. Hunter Biden’s associate Francis “Fran” Person visited the White House at least seven times between 2015 and 2016 after becoming head of Harves Group, a company with ties to the Chinese Communist Party, Fox News has reported, referring to WH visitor logs. Person served in the Obama administration as an adviser to then-Vice President Biden and a special assistant to President Obama between 2009 and 2014.
- Germany should consider the risks of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev spreading beyond Ukraine’s borders and plunging the world into a full-scale Third World War, dozens of German cultural figures have told Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in an open letter calling on him to stop sending arms to Ukraine. Berlin should “do everything” to help the sides reach a ceasefire “as soon as possible” and to find a “compromise that both sides can accept.”
- Unrest erupted in Sweden. The riots saw dozens of people arrested, a school set on fire and more than 100 police officers injured, in a country where, during the migration crisis of 2015, around 163,000 migrants requested asylum – more people per capita than in any other EU nation. In his pitch to the banks, the SpaceX founder noted that Twitter’s gross margin is much lower than that of peers such as Meta’s Facebook or Pinterest, three people familiar with the matter were quoted as saying by Reuters.
- The senior EU official cautioned the billionaire against being too lax on content moderation, suggesting the platform could face a ban should it fail to abide by the bloc’s rules. The EU has recently adopted the so-called ‘Digital Services Act’, a package of regulations designed to force social network platforms to police their content much more aggressively and to cooperate closer with regulators.
- The billionaire entrepreneur, and new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk is unlikely to succeed in bringing the “free speech” he has promised to the platform, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said. He expressed doubts whether a “full palette” of opinions could be presented on any Western social media. “Russia’s attitude towards this company is based on the actions of this company, on censorship, selective repressive actions against the company’s clients, on the distortion and manipulation of information,” Peskov stated on Thursday.
- French officials say that a 2,000-year-old shipwreck in the Mediterranean off the coast of Cannes has been looted since it was discovered in 2017, CBS News reports. “The losses of scientific and historical information are probably significant,” the nation’s culture ministry and police said in a statement. - Indonesia will impose “strict sanctions” against those who violate the country’s palm oil export ban to protect the domestic market, Trade Minister Muhammad Lutfi said Thursday. Indonesia has widened the scope of its export ban on raw materials for cooking oil to include crude and refined palm oil.
- Health Canada is reviewing the first request to approve a COVID-19 vaccine for very young kids. The Moderna application is for children between the ages of six months and five years old. The company says a trial of 6,700 children determined the vaccine was safe and produced a similar antibody response to the one that is seen in adults. Health Canada received Moderna’s application after the company made a similar request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday.
- Georgia joined a growing number of Republican-led U.S. states to ban schools from teaching “divisive” academic concepts about racism. The measures are part of movement among conservatives targeting the teaching of critical race theory.
- “The refusal to call into question one’s beliefs or certainties, to be confronted by or even hear of opposing points of view shows a worrying retreat of the democratic mind,” Education Minister of Quebec, Jean-Francois Roberge, and France’s Minister of National Education, Jean-Michel Blanquer, wrote in an open letter. The two educational leaders decried the self-described “woke agenda” and its toll on French culture in both countries over the past few years. Collectively, they described it as a “culture of intolerance and erasure” that arrived from U.S. universities.
