  • Several of Türkiye’s NATO allies are engaged in hostile activities against Ankara, the country’s Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu has claimed. His comment came shortly after the US issued a warning to its citizens in the country about the possibility of “imminent” terrorist attacks. Speaking on Thursday, Soylu said: “On the day when we announced our target to attract 60 million tourists annually, they started psychological warfare against Türkiye.” The UK, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and several other nations also announced their decisions to temporarily shut down their respective consulates in Istanbul, citing a terrorist threat.

  • [Little Reminder] October 12, 2021 – The offshore links of presidents Guillermo Lasso of Ecuador and Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine will be officially scrutinized, while Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta is due to discuss financial transparency with U.S. President Joe Biden. The Associated Press reported that the Pandora Papers revelations are expected to be brought up during the Oval Office meeting. Since the weekend, new countries joined more than a dozen nations that had already vowed investigations stemming from the Pandora Papers, a groundbreaking investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and 150 media partners in more than 110 countries around the world. In Ukraine, the National Agency for Prevention of Corruption is examining declarations by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the head of Ukraine’s Security Service, Ivan Bakanov. NAPC Chairman Oleksandr Novikov said the agency would take into account information published as part of the Pandora Papers investigation. The Pandora Papers revealed that Zelenskyy and some of his close associates owned shares in an anonymous offshore entity. Documents show that Zelenskyy owned a stake in a shell company registered in the British Virgin Islands called Maltex Multicapital Corp, which is described in leaked records as holding shares in film-production and distribution companies. Zelenskyy did not respond to ICIJ partners’ repeated requests for comment during the reporting of the Pandora Papers.

  • Mourners and protesters faced off in Sydney on Thursday at the funeral service for Australian Cardinal George Pell, a former top Vatican official who was acquitted in 2020 of sexual abuse accusations. Australian police officials said they had dropped a court bid to block a protest after organisers agreed to change an initial demonstration route and gather in a road adjacent to St Mary’s Cathedral, the funeral venue. Hundreds took part in the protest.

  • [Zelensky’s Wife Spent 40,000 Euros in Paris While Asking for More Money for Ukraine] The US Treasury Department has said there are no indications that money provided to Kiev by Washington is being misused amid the country’s conflict with Russia. Reuters raised the issue on Tuesday in the wake of a corruption scandal in Ukraine last week, which resulted in the dismissal of several high-ranking officials. These included the deputy head of President Vladimir Zelensky’s office, several deputy ministers and heads of regional administrations, as well as Deputy Prosecutor General Aleksey Simonenko. “We have no indication that US funds have been misused in Ukraine,” stated Treasury spokesperson Megan Apper. However, Apper pointed out that Washington would continue working with the World Bank to track US financial aid packages “to confirm that they are used as intended, as well as with Ukraine and other partners to tackle corruption.”

  • The Pentagon has recently released its 2022 Annual Report on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), which highlights their efforts to better understand these mysterious sightings. According to the report, there were 366 new reports of UAP in 2022, with over half of them believed to be either airborne clutter, drones, or balloon-like entities. However, 171 of these reports remain completely unidentifiable, with some even demonstrating “unusual flight characteristics”. The Pentagon is working with allies to try to get to the bottom of what these UAP are and better understand the phenomenon.

  • A 23-year-old German-Iraqi woman sought out a lookalike on Instagram and murdered her with a friend in order to fake her own death, prosecutors in Bavaria believe. The victim was eventually named as Khadidja O, an Algerian beauty blogger from Heilbronn in the neighbouring state of Baden-Württemberg, also 23. “Investigations have led us to assume that the accused wanted to go into hiding because of a family dispute and fake her own death to that effect,” Veronika Grieser of the Ingolstadt state prosecutor’s office said on Monday morning. Police say several women bearing her resemblance had been contacted by Sharaban K, operating on social media sites under numerous aliases, in the week before the murder. “By making various promises she tried to bring about meetings, which was initially unsuccessful,” Grieser said. The Ingolstadt prosecutor, told the Bild newspaper: ‘It can be assumed that the suspect wanted to go into hiding, due to internal disputes with her family, and fake her own death.’

  • The two biggest South American economies, Brazil and Argentina, have recently unveiled plans to create a common currency, sparking speculation about a new global monetary union. The new currency will reportedly be called ‘sur,’ which translates from Spanish as ‘south.’ It won’t replace the Brazilian real and Argentine peso, but will rather run beside them. It is not clear yet how the new monetary unit would be valued, but the Brazilian government is reportedly looking at stablecoins as a possible reference. If successful, the sur could become the second most widely-used international currency, considering both its circulation market (about 260 million people) and the volume of GDP of the two nations.

  • An independent investigation into the US government’s overseas biolabs is long overdue, investigative journalists said. National Security Council strategic communications coordinator John Kirby made a rather contradictory statement concerning the Pentagon’s support to Ukrainian bioresearch facilities recently. While denying that “there are no bioweapons labs, there is no bio weapons work being done by or with the United States with Ukraine in Ukraine,” Kirby nonetheless acknowledged that the US “had been working with the Ukrainians on some pandemic prevention research.” “John Kirby has little credibility with the American public,” John Cullen, a US investigative journalist and founder of #IamJohnCullen podcast, said. “The US government is using ‘word-smithing’ to dance around the facts. They refuse to call them bio-warfare labs. However, if you look at what Ray Kurzweil, senior fellow at Google said in 2005, ‘This is extremely foolish. The genome is essentially the design of a weapon of mass destruction’ – when talking about the resurrection of the 1918 pandemic H1N1 strain. The US government knows these viruses are weapons, but refuses to call them that (…) Clearly the US had funded research at these labs. Semantics about what is biowarfare and what is not, is how they dance around the truth.”

  • The Philippines has granted the United States expanded access to its military bases, their defense chiefs said, amid mounting concern over China’s increasing assertiveness in the disputed South China Sea and tensions over self-ruled Taiwan.

  • Ukraine’s plans to seize Crimea from Russia are unlikely to succeed in the near future, lawmakers in the US House Armed Services Committee were told at a classified meeting with the Defense Department, according to Politico. The outlet reports that it spoke to four people who disclosed details from the meeting but wished to remain anonymous. Although the sources did not explain what had led defense officials to their assessment, they stated that the main assertion was that Ukraine does not have the capability to drive Russian forces out of the peninsula. Nor do they expect that situation to change anytime soon. If Kiev attempts such an operation, its success cannot be guaranteed, one of the sources noted.

  • The FBI has searched US President Joe Biden’s home in Rehoboth, Delaware as part of its ongoing probe into his unauthorized storage of classified material on his properties, Biden’s lawyer Bob Bauer revealed on Wednesday, stressing that the search was both “planned” and consensual. Investigators did not require a search warrant because they were acting with the “full support” of the president, and the agency has not commented on the operation. Bauer explained that the public had not been notified ahead of time in order to maintain “operational security and integrity.” It emerged on Tuesday that the FBI had searched Washington, DC think tank the Penn Biden Center in November after classified documents were discovered there just days before Americans voted in the 2022 midterms. Biden maintained an office at the center from 2017 to 2019, in between his stints in the White House. Neither the discovery nor the subsequent search were made public at the time.

  • A centuries-old gold pendant bearing the initials of a 16th century King of England has been discovered in Warwickshire by a café owner from Birmingham. According to local media reports, Charlie Clarke stumbled upon the piece of jewelry while he was exploring a field with a metal detector. The pendant is made of 300 grams of 24-carat gold and features the emblems of the House of Tudor and Henry’s first wife Katherine of Aragon. The pendant is heart-shaped and bears the emblem of the House of Tudor, the house of King Henry VIII, and a pomegranate, the symbol of Henry’s first wife Katherine of Aragon.

  • Cops in a south-west England port city have brought in a rather unusual ‘prisoner’ — a swan who have been involved in a night-time road accident. Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police got an unusual call out on the evening of Wednesday February 1 of “a swan being removed from the Harbour by a drunk male.” The culprit had somehow managed to coax or drag the big bird around a mile from the Plymouth marina, through the busy city centre to Mutley Plain, a major shopping street and nightlife hub, where it was hit by a car. Officers from the city’s emergency response unit tweeted a mugshot of the swan in custody, shut in the back of a police car and wrapped in a blanket.

  • Aluminum nanoparticle fallout from climate engineering operations are building up in our snow, soils and runoff waters, the levels are far beyond alarming. Lab test results of snow from the side of Northern California’s Mt. Shasta are a truly shocking example. Testing samples from this formerly pristine water source have revealed levels of aluminum that are so astronomically high that the meltwater can only be considered completely contaminated. The photographs were taken in 1912 in Antartica by Captain Robert Scott and his crew. However, the photos were classified as soon as they returned to their base and reported the results. Scott and his crew were then reported missing. Since then, it has been a restricted area, with only a few governments around the world allowed to conduct limited research.
