  • Seattle business owners are installing one-ton concrete blocks on the city’s streets in a bid to prevent homeless people from camping out on the sidewalks. The Democrat-led city struggles with a homeless population of nearly 13,300 – exacerbated by the pandemic – and they frequently set up tent camps along the streets. But the concrete slabs are the way that locals are attempting to curb homeless camps and RVs being planted outside shops – after the city paused parking enforcement during the pandemic. The blocks are so heavy that they can’t be moved without specialized equipment – making them burdensome for the city to remove as they continue to pop up in Georgetown, Ballard and Sodo.

  • Chilean authorities started investigating on Monday a mysterious sinkhole about 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter that appeared over the weekend in a mining area in the north of the country. Chilean media showed aerial images of the sinkhole on land operated by a Canadian Lundin Mining (LUN.TO) copper mine, about 665 kilometers (413 miles) north of capital Santiago. The National Service of Geology and Mining (Sernageomin) became aware of the sinkhole on Saturday and has sent specialist personnel to the area, the agency’s director David Montenegro said in a statement. “There is a considerable distance, approximately 200 meters (656 feet), to the bottom,” Montenegro said. “We haven’t detected any material down there, but we have seen the presence of a lot of water.”

  • Reduced gas supplies from Russia and a feared possible complete cut-off may lead to a reduction in the number of functional crematoriums in Germany, the industry representatives have suggested to the news agency. Amid the dwindling flow, crematoriums are switching off some furnaces, while keeping others running constantly, so these don’t cool down and require more gas to be reheated, Reuters writes. Not all crematoriums, however, have sufficient demand to justify the model, Svend-Joerk Sobolewski, chairman of Germany’s cremation consortium, told the agency. In the event of any gas rationing, the sector should be prioritized because most crematoriums cannot function without gas, Sobolewski added. “You cannot switch off death,” he explained.

  • The US state of Massachusetts has overturned a witchcraft conviction from over 300 years ago after a school teacher and her pupils campaigned to clear the name of a mentally ill woman condemned during the notorious Salem Witch Trials. The exoneration of 22-year-old Elizabeth Johnson Jr comes as part of a $53 billion state budget bill signed by Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker on Thursday, some 329 years after the woman was accused of being a witch. Johnson Jr was among over 200 people suspected of practicing witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials between 1692 and 1693. The trials, which were fueled by superstitions, fear of disease and other paranoia saw 19 people hanged and one person crushed to death by rocks. Johnson was one of 10 others found guilty of witchcraft and sentenced to death. However, due to an order by Governor William Phips in 1693, those executions were stayed. Johnson Jr died in 1747 at the age of 77. While most of the women branded witches during the trials have since had their names cleared, Johnson Jr was until now left out, presumably due to her having no descendants fighting to clear her name.

  • The Skolkovo Foundation, Technopark Skolkovo LLC and the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology (Skoltech) found themselves blacklisted for “operating or having operated in the technology sector of the Russian Federation economy.” Also targeted by the State Department sanctions was the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MFTI), for “operating or having operated in the defense and related materiel sector,” specifically developing drones for use by the Russian military. The Treasury Department said the new US sanctions were targeting “Kremlin-connected elites, a major multinational company, and a sanctions evasion operation, as well as one yacht.” The embargoed “elites” and businesses operate in “economic sectors that generate substantial revenue for the Russian regime,” the Treasury said.

  • Spain cannot send its Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine because they have not been used for years and might be dangerous for operators, Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles told reporters on Tuesday. Robles previously said in June that the possibility of sending the tanks “was on the table” after the Spanish newspaper El País reported that Spanish officials were considering sending about 40 German-produced Leopard tanks housed at a facility in Zaragoza. “We are today looking at all the possibilities, but I can already say that the Leopards in Zaragoza that have not been used for many years cannot be sent because they are in an absolutely deplorable state,” Robles said on Tuesday at an air base in Torrejon de Ardoz, Madrid. “We can’t give them away because they would be a risk to the people” operating them, she said.

  • Are we really allergic to food, or are we increasingly allergic to what has been done to it? A commonly used weedkiller made by Monsanto has been linked to cancer is appearing in more than 80% of urine samples from kids and adults in the U.S. according to a study. ~ awakenedspecies

  • Billionaire agitator George Soros has penned an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal defending ‘his’ District Attorneys against accusations that their soft-on-crime approach is responsible for soaring crime across the country. “I have been involved in efforts to reform the criminal-justice system for the more than 30 years I have been a philanthropist … Yet our system is rife with injustices that make us all less safe,” Soros writes. According to Soros, citing “the most rigorous academic study,” the “violent crime in recent years has generally been increasing more quickly in jurisdictions without reform-minded prosecutors,” and “Murder rates have been rising fastest in some Republican states led by tough-on-crime politicians.” In 2020 under Soros-funded District Attorney George Gascón, the city of Los Angeles saw a 36% increase in homicides, which LA County Sheriff, Alex Villanueva, blamed on the DA.

  • A traveller has been fined 2,664 Australian dollars (US $1,874) after two undeclared egg and beef sausage McMuffins and a ham croissant were found in his luggage upon arrival at Australia’s Darwin Airport. The passenger travelled from Bali, Indonesia, to Australia, and his food was detected by a biosecurity detector dog named Zinta, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry said. “This fine is twice the cost of an airfare to Bali, but I have no sympathy for people who choose to disobey Australia’s strict biosecurity measures,” Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Murray Watt said.

  • US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi is “always causing trouble,” former US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday amid Pelosi’s controversial visit to Taiwan that initiated numerous warnings by China of serious consequences to such a move. “Why is Crazy Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan? Always causing trouble. Nothing she does turns out well (two failed impeachments, loss of House, etc.). WATCH! [sic]” Trump said via the social media platform Truth. Pelosi led a US congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific region, including a visit to Taiwan starting on Tuesday to reaffirm the United States’ support for democracy on the island.

  • For up to $50,000 a year, masked attendees of the elite international sex club SNCTM get the right to rub shoulders (and, perhaps, not just shoulders) with some A-list celebrities, enjoying cocktails and sexual performances in a dimly-lit space in mansions hidden from prying eyes, behind a high fence and professional security. According to a fresh report by the Sun, the club’s members pay hefty sums to attend orgies in opulent surroundings, which start out as a rather bizarre but quite ordinary social event for the wealthiest and most powerful.

Blue Sand Ripples On Mars

The landscape, which was captured by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) earlier this year, was processed using a technique known as “false color,” which turns subtle differences in light wavelengths into stunning color palettes that are impossible to miss. The Martian landscape is covered in what appears to be ripples of blue sand, which gives the red planet an even more bizarre appearance. However, the eye-catching coloring is deceptive, the Science Alert website reported, citing newly released images from NASA. The Gamboa Crater in the northern hemisphere of Mars is the area that MRO has observed for the pictures. Each pixel in the image, which has a stunning resolution, is equivalent to 25 centimeters (or 9.8 inches).
