  • Seven aid workers with the World Central Kitchen were killed in a strike on their vehicles in central Gaza late Monday after they helped deliver food and other supplies to northern Gaza that had arrived hours earlier by ship, the charity said Tuesday morning. “This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war. This is unforgivable,” World Central Kitchen CEO Erin Gore said in a statement. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged a “tragic” and “unintentional” incident and vowed to “do everything” to prevent a recurrence. The Israeli military promised to investigate the incident “at the highest levels.” A Haaretz report on Tuesday afternoon said the IAF had fired three missiles in quick succession at three vehicles.

  • [Burned Brains] A six-legged animal but it is not an insect: it is a mouse with two extra limbs instead of genitals. Research on this genetically modified rodent, published March 20 in Nature Communications1, revealed how changes in the 3D structure of DNA can influence how embryos develop. Developmental biologist Moisés Mallo at the Gulbenkian Science Institute in Oeiras, Portugal, and his colleagues were studying one of the receptor proteins, Tgfbr1, in a signaling pathway involved in many aspects of embryonic development. Researchers have long known that, in most four-limbed animals, both the external genitalia (penis or clitoris) and hind limbs develop from the same primordial structures. When Mallo’s team looked further into the six-legged mouse phenomenon, they found that Tgfbr1 directs these structures to become either genitalia or limbs by altering the way that DNA folds in the structure’s cells. Deactivating the protein changed the activity of other genes, resulting in extra limbs and no true external genitalia.

  • [Burned Brains] A Chinese scientist once jailed for helping to create the world’s first genome-edited babies seems to have not missed a beat. In a recent interview, He Jiankui revealed that he is once again working in the field of human genetic engineering. These newest experiments are reportedly in compliance with ethical standards and He Jiankui has pledged that he will not work to produce any further modified humans. In November 2018, at an international scientific conference, he shocked the world when he announced that his team had modified the genes of several human embryos, then implanted them successfully in women volunteers. The modifications, purportedly made with the gene-editing technology CRISPR/Cas9, were intended to confer immunity to HIV infection. At the time of his announcement, one woman had already given birth to twin baby sisters Lulu and Nana, while a second pregnancy and third child arrived the following year. He’s genome-editing of living humans explicitly flouted Chinese law.

  • A 12-year-old child has died and two others have been seriously wounded in a school shooting in Finland. The suspect, a fellow pupil, ran off after the shooting but was later arrested, police said. He was holding a licensed handgun owned by a close relative and admitted carrying out the shooting in an initial interview, they added. The shooting took place on Tuesday morning at the Viertola school in Vantaa, a suburb of the capital, Helsinki. Katri Kalske, a deputy city manager for education and training of the city of Vantaa, said she was deeply shocked by the incident and there had been no advance warning, telling Yle: “This came as a big surprise to everyone.” She said she hoped the shooting would act as a wake-up call to society.

  • Labour plans to swiftly abolish all hereditary peers in the UK House of Lords in its first term in power. A Labour government would prioritise ending the “anachronistic” system under which 92 seats in the Lords are reserved for British aristocrats by axing the hereditary peers’ status as legislators, party insiders said. They added that the party, if it wins the general election expected this year, will act quickly to scrap the hereditary element — jettisoning a weaker proposal to reduce the number slowly by ending the by-elections that take place after a hereditary peer retires or dies in order to appoint a successor.

  • Top European prosecutors are investigating allegations of criminal wrongdoing in connection with vaccine negotiations between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the CEO of Pfizer, according to a spokesperson from the Liège prosecutor’s office. Investigators from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) have in recent months taken over from Belgian prosecutors investigating von der Leyen over “interference in public functions, destruction of SMS, corruption and conflict of interest,” according to legal documents seen by POLITICO and a spokesperson from the Liège prosecutor’s office. The probe was originally opened by Belgian judicial authorities in the city of Liège in early 2023 after a criminal complaint lodged by local lobbyist Frédéric Baldan. He was later joined by the Hungarian and Polish governments — although the latter is in the process of withdrawing its complaint after the election win by a pro-EU government led by Donald Tusk, a Polish government spokesperson told POLITICO.

  • Republican US Congressman from Michigan Tim Walberg has proposed ending the conflict in Gaza and Ukraine with a nuclear strike, TASS reports. Speaking in his home state, he said the United States “should not spend a single penny on humanitarian aid” in the Gaza Strip. “ It should be like Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Finish it quickly ,” he told the Washington Post. “It’s the same in Ukraine ,” Wahlberg added. The United States dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II to speed up Japan’s surrender. This is the only example in history of the combat use of nuclear weapons. According to various sources, from 70 to 100 thousand people became victims of these attacks. By the end of 1945, this number had increased due to those who were injured and exposed. The total number currently exceeds 350 thousand. ~ Denis Telmanov

  • In an absolutely stunning move, Israel eliminated the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. Needless to say, the Iranians are absolutely furious and promise a “ harsh ” response. I have long warned my readers that an apocalyptic war in the Middle East will be one of the defining conflicts of World War III. The good news is that the war in the Middle East has not yet reached an apocalyptic level. But after what we witnessed on Monday, we are only one step away. A building near the Iranian embassy in Damascus was destroyed in an airstrike, which reportedly killed a senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and five others – with state media claiming Israel was behind the attack. The Syrian government claims that the missiles that destroyed this building were launched from the Golan Heights. ~ Michael Snyder

  • Google agreed to destroy or de-identify billions of records of web browsing data collected when users were in its private browsing “Incognito mode,” according to a proposed class action settlement filed Monday. The proposed settlement in Brown v. Google will also mandate greater disclosure from the company about how it collects information in Incognito mode and put limits on future data collection. If approved by a California federal judge, the settlement could apply to 136 million Google users. The 2020 lawsuit was brought by Google account holders who accused the company of illegally tracking their behavior through the private browsing feature. The proposal is valued at $5 billion, according to Monday’s court filing, calculated by determining the value of data Google has stored and would be forced to destroy and the data it would be prevented from collecting. Google would need to address data collected in private browsing mode in December 2023 and earlier. Any data that is not outright deleted must be de-identified.

  • Canadian soldiers were forced to rely on food donations during cyber training in Ottawa because of inadequate military support and the city’s high cost of living, Ottawa Citizen reported on Tuesday. Some soldiers did not receive reimbursement for their expenses during the cyber training for months, the report said, citing military personnel familiar with the matter. The soldiers were not initially eligible to receive a housing allowance for their time in Ottawa, the report said. Staff at Willis College, where the cyber training took place, eventually created a food donation cupboard for hungry military personnel, the report said.

  • Under the West’s watch, Ukraine has morphed into a gangsters’ paradise with all sorts of illicit drugs passing through its territory and the domestic production and consumption of synthetic narcotics booming. Back in June 2002, the US Justice Department emphasized Ukraine’s growing importance as a transit point for heroin trafficking largely originating from Afghanistan which went through the Balkan and Northern routes. The US-backed 2014 coup in Ukraine exacerbated the problem and was followed by a spike in corruption, gang crime, and weapons smuggling. The role of Ukraine as a transit point for extremists and illicit drugs to Europe has also increased.

  • Researchers have discovered a massive, abnormally structured volcano on Mars that dwarfs Mount Everest that has remained undiscovered for decades, a new study has found. Lead author and planetary scientist at the SETI Institute, Dr. Pascal Lee, and University of Maryland doctoral student of geology, Sourabh Shubham, have possibly discovered a previously unknown volcano on Mars. They presented their findings on March 13 at the 55th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas. Despite years of satellite observation, the volcano, nested within the Noctis Labyrinthus region on Mars, had gone unnoticed due to its eroded and collapsed state. The journey to the volcano’s discovery started in 2015. The researchers provisionally called it “Noctis volcano,” but proposed a potential site east of Noctis Labyrinthus dubbed “Noctis landing” for future Mars missions, aiming to search for extraterrestrial life.

  • On Feb. 21, after some seven months in space, Varda Space Industries’ W-1 capsule successfully returned to Earth, carrying with it a unique payload: the HIV/AIDS medication ritonavir. Varda Space seeks to autonomously manufacture pharmaceuticals in microgravity. The W-1 mission sought to test the feasibility of making therapeutics in space, testing Varda’s hardware off Earth for the first time. During its time in orbit, the W-1 capsule successfully crystalized the metastable Form III of the antiviral drug ritonavir, which then survived its return to Earth. The space-processed ritonavir has since been analyzed, and per an X post by Varda Space cofounder Delian Asparouhov, “[t]hem space drugs cooked real good.”

  • Every so often, the sun’s simmering magnetic field burps colossal clouds of plasma out into the space beyond. These are called coronal mass ejections (CMEs). If one CME strikes Earth, for example, the result can be spectacular auroras — and, just-as-spectacular disruptions of electrical grids and satellites. Now, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe has gotten a first-ever peek inside a CME as it erupted from the sun. And what lies inside appears to be a treasure trove for solar physicists. The probe’s visible-light-detecting, Wide-field Imager for Parker Solar Probe (WISPR) instrument caught clear, turbulent eddies within the CME. The eddies are what physicists call Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities (KHI). Physicists think KHI events occur whenever one patch of fast-moving fluid interacts with another. On Earth, KHI occurs in clouds when the wind speed at one end of the cloud is different from that at the other end.

News Burst 3 April 2024 - Sphinx’s Nose

The Sphinx’s Nose

The Sphinx is one of the historical and popular sites in Egypt. Several stories have been created and spread, purporting to reveal who broke the Sphinx’s nose. The star of those stories is Napoleon Bonaparte. It is believed that the Sphinx’s nose was broken during one of the French military battles near Giza, as a cannonball fired by Napoleon’s soldiers hit the nose and caused it to break off, during French campaign in Egypt in 1798 CE. Sketches of the Sphinx by Dane Frederic Louis Norden were created in 1737 CE, and published in 1755 CE, well before the era of Napoleon. However, these drawings illustrate the Sphinx without a nose and clearly contradicts the legend. The evidence is an oil painting by Danish Naval Captain and Explorer Frederic Louis Norden (1708-1742) of the Sphinx, published in Voyage d’Egypte et de Nubie (1755 CE), in which the statue was painted without a nose. So what really happened ? #archaeohistories
