  • An Australian team studying the universe’s radio waves has discovered a new type of beam that comes and goes, one of the brightest radio sources in the sky. The details of the discovery were published in Nature on Thursday.
“What we found, though, is something that switches on and off every 20 minutes,” astrophysicist Dr Natasha Hurley-Walker said. “It was kind of spooky for an astronomer because there’s nothing known in the sky that does that. And it’s really quite close to us – about 4,000 light years away. It’s in our galactic backyard.”

  • About 52% of people counted as Covid-19 patients in England aren’t actually in the hospital because of the virus.

  • Public health officials in many jurisdictions, such as Massachusetts in the US and Canada’s Ontario province, have begun delineating patients who are hospitalized with the virus – not because of it – to provide a clearer picture of Covid-19’s virulence amid concerns that lumping in incidental infections can misrepresent the pandemic’s health impact.

  • A rare species of leafhopper insect with “leaf-shaped genitals” has been discovered by a British scientist in Uganda, a nation in East Africa. Dr. Alvin Helden of UK’s Anglia Ruskin University made this discovery while doing field work in a rainforest in Kibale National Park in western Uganda. Calling it an “incredibly rare insect”, Dr. Helden was awed by the leafhopper’s distinctive metallic sheen, red eyes, black head and pitted body surface.

  • US telecom regulator the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced on Thursday that it had voted unanimously to revoke authorization for China Unicom’s American unit to operate in the United States. The firm must now stop providing telecommunications services in the country within 60 days, the FCC said.

  • Six people were children living near the Fukushima nuclear power plant at the time of the 2011 disaster, have developed thyroid cancer, blaming radiation that seeped from the power plant for their condition. The plaintiffs, now aged between 17 and 27, are seeking compensation from the Fukushima operator, the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO). They demand the company pay a total of 616 million yen ($5.4 million). “Some plaintiffs have had difficulties advancing to higher education and finding jobs, and have even given up on their dreams for their future,” the group’s chief lawyer, Kenichi Ido, told AFP.

  • Philip Brunker, the 80-year-old pastor at the Ebenezer Strict Baptist Church in London, has apparently been aware of the “paedophile past” of his 39-year old son-in-law Ben Kinderman, whom he appointed as deacon at the church, MailOnline reports. According to the newspaper, Brunker sent a letter to his flock and informed them that he was aware of Kinderman’s deeds back in 2009. The pastor explained that Kinderman had confessed his crimes to him while applying for membership at the church, and that they were “fully satisfied” with the man’s repentance.

  • “China welcomes the visit of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights [Michelle] Bachelet to China and Xinjiang. We have already sent an invitation earlier and the two sides are constantly in contact on this issue,” Zhao said at a briefing. Earlier in the day, the South China Morning Post reported, citing unnamed sources, that China had agreed to host a visit to Xinjiang by Bachelet in the first half of the year after the Winter Olympic Games. Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region is the largest province in China with a population of 25 million people from various ethnic groups, but about 43% of them are Uyghurs, most of whom are Muslims. The region, bordering seven countries, including Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been considered an epicenter of terrorism and extremism for many years.

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk accused Joe Biden of “treating the American public like fools” after the POTUS met in the White House with executives from the electric vehicle maker’s rivals, General Motors (GM) and Ford Motor Company earlier this week. Biden had gathered together GM CEO Mary Barra, Ford CEO Jim Farley and other business leaders to tout his administration’s $1.75 trillion Build Back Better legislation. The massive spending bill has stalled in the evenly-split Senate after a Democratic holdout, US Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., refused to support it. Biden, who touted GM’s recent $7 billion investment in Michigan to ramp up EV production, tweeted after the White House meeting to say that companies like “GM and Ford are building more electric vehicles here at home than ever before”. Elon Musk, the CEO of the world’s largest EV maker, also based in the US, went on to tweet that “Biden is a damp [sock] puppet in human form” and hinted the name of his company that should have been mentioned, “Starts with a T, Ends with an A, ESL in the middle.”

  • Expo 2020 in Dubai: Russian Pharma Industry Open to Cooperation With Arab World, said Prof. Dmitry Kudlay, vice president of new medical technologies implementation at Russian pharmaceutical company Generium. The participants of the council’s session also focused their attention on the matter of biotechnology development, concluding that the global trend in emphasising “human survival”, which has served as a powerful driver for such development for the past 30 years, is rapidly shifting toward an emphasis on “human enhancement”. “According to a forecast for Russia’s scientific and technological development till year 2030, cellular, genome and post-genome technologies will serve as foundation for preventing the spread of various types of diseases, including transmissible infections of humans and animals,” Kudlay remarked.

  • A big step towards was made by an international team of researchers at the Lawrence National Laboratory in Livermore, US, part of the Energy Department, who managed to heat fusion fuel at an extreme temperature so that the plasma gave off more energy than it received. Plasma is called the fourth state of matter after solid, liquid, and gas, and can be produced in thermonuclear reactors. There are main two ways of generating net energy through fusion. The more common one is based on slow thermonuclear fusion, in which physicists contain the hot plasma using magnetic fields and electric currents.

  • A magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit Tarapaca, Chile late on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors were recorded at a depth of about 96 kilometers. EMSC, which initially put the magnitude at 5.8, later revised its report of the earthquake’s intensity. There have been no reports yet of possible damage or victims. Chile is located in the zone of the Pacific belt or the so-called “Pacific ring,” where increased seismic activity is regularly recorded.

  • A convoy of truckers and their supporters is set to converge on the Canadian capital in a protest which has spiralled from frustrations over vaccine mandates into calls for the repeal of all public health measures – and even the overthrow of the federal government. Ahead of Saturday’s protest in Ottawa, the prime minister, Justin Trudeau, dismissed the group as a “small fringe” that held “unacceptable views” and didn’t reflect the majority of Canadians.

News Burst 29 January 2022 - White Angel

White Angel

The anonymous work appeared on January 16 in Arcugnano in the Vicenza area and the mayor Paolo Pellizzari renamed it the White Angel. No one has yet claimed the authorship of the work. “I am happy with this ‘presence’ and it is also a good sign to enhance our municipality”. And many, on social media, saw the appearance of the “angel” as a sign of good wishes for the end of the Covid-19 pandemic.
