- In various areas of the Kalix municipality in northernmost Sweden, residents have been sporting a green hairdo for several years, a phenomenon that has baffled both locals and authorities alike. Despite the chronic nature of the problem, its reason has remained largely a mystery. So far everyone seems agreed that metals are at the root of the problem, but where the metals come from remains unknown. Greenish hair is sometimes associated with water having a low pH value, but Kalix’s municipal water hasn’t shown any sign of this. In Kalix, all municipal drinking water comes from groundwater sources, and the water’s pH has not exceeded the Swedish Food Agency’s limits. One of the guesses was that the culprit might be water pipes releasing copper. “We see it more and more,” hairdresser Sara Cave told Swedish media. “Down south, this has been a bigger problem for a long time, but they have harder water than us up here,” she added. However, the Kalix municipality has taken samples from the outgoing water from places where green hair was reported, with inconclusive results.
- Elon Musk reacted to a thread by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, in which he posited that in 2023 the US could split up after a civil war and the Twitter CEO could become president of one of the remnants, calling it “epic.” Musk later clarified that he found the predictions “absurd.” Medvedev now serves as deputy chair of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, and was given a new senior position in military procurement this week. On Monday, he posted ten potential developments for 2023, with a disclaimer that they were meant to be “wild.” The predictions ranged from oil being traded at $150 a barrel, the UK reversing Brexit and losing Northern Ireland, to an armed conflict between France and a ‘Fourth Reich’. The latter, according to Medvedev, would include Germany and “its satellites, i.e., Poland, the Baltic states, Czechia, Slovakia, the Kiev Republic, and other outcasts.” For the US, Medvedev predicted a new civil war, with California and Texas becoming independent.
- All social media platforms work with the US government to censor content, Twitter CEO Elon Musk claimed on Tuesday. Documents released by Musk following his purchase of Twitter showed that the platform colluded with the FBI, CIA, Pentagon and other government agencies to suppress information on elections, Ukraine, and Covid-19. “*Every* social media company is engaged in heavy censorship, with significant involvement of and, at times, explicit direction of the government,” Musk tweeted, adding that “Google frequently makes links disappear, for example.”
- Speaking to Die Welt, Austrian Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner evaluated the possibility of blackouts in some parts of the EU as “very high” in the near future. “The risk of a widespread power failure has once again increased significantly as a result of the Ukraine war,” she said. “The question is not if it happens, but when,” the minister stressed. “We shouldn’t pretend that this is just a theory. We have to prepare for blackouts in Austria and in Europe,” the minister stated.
- An experiment by psychologists from Macquarie University in Sydney Australia, showed that women can tell by smell which men are married and which are not. Moreover, women find the odor of single men sexier than the smell of those who are already taken. The experiment involved 82 heterosexual women, whose age ranged from 18 to 35 years. Researchers asked them to evaluate the body and facial odors of men. Each participant of the study received T-shirts from six men: three of them did not have a permanent relationship, and three were married. According to the scientists, women can spot single men out because of testosterone levels: the higher the testosterone level, the stronger the smell.
- Russia’s Roscosmos is interested in remaining involved in the International Space Station (ISS) project after 2024, a top official has said. The space agency is now working on government approval of the decision. The International Space Station was launched in 1998, with plans to remain in orbit until 2024. NASA had previously announced that it intended to prolong the run of the aging station until 2030. But the new head of Roscosmos, Yury Borisov, previously indicated that Russia would consider withdrawing from the project after its initial expiration date in 2024 and begin its own national space station. The Russian space agency later clarified that it wasn’t going to make any “abrupt” moves, instead thoroughly considering the decision on a possible pullout. Sergey Krikalev, the head of the agency’s human spaceflight programs, said on Tuesday that Roscosmos had been considering prolonging its participation in the ISS project for at least another four years.
- The winter storm that hammered more than half of the US over Christmas weekend has killed at least 50 people, according to a tally by the Associated Press. 27 of these deaths occurred in western New York alone. The storm, caused by the collision of warm, moist air from the south with cold, dry air from the north, hit the US east coast from the Great Lakes near Canada to the Rio Grande along the US-Mexico border, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Out West, an atmospheric river event – caused by a plume of moisture coming inland from the Pacific Ocean – brought heavy rain and snow from Washington down through Oregon and into California on Monday.
- Vomiting, an involuntary, forceful reflex that empties our stomach and boasts an assortment of colloquial synonyms, such as throwing up, hurling, puking, tossing, or upchucking, is the brain’s “defense” reaction, a study claims. Whether responding to bacterial toxins or chemotherapeutic drugs, such as those used for cancer patients, the brain initiates its response as part of what scientists at the National Institute of Biological Sciences in Beijing called a “gut-to-brain circuit.”
- In a report for Washington beltway media, the expert pointed out that the US Drug Enforcement Administration has recently determined that six in every ten fake fentanyl-laced prescription pills analyzed in 2022 contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl – above the 2021 dataset, in which four in ten fake prescriptions contained a lethal dose. Authorities are also struggling to catch up with drug traffickers’ deadly resourcefulness in cooking up new varieties of narcotic substances, such as tranq dope – fentanyl mixed with the animal tranquilizer xylazine, known to cause severe breakouts of skin ulcers, and even result in users requiring their limbs to be amputated.
- Every school child is familiar with the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, or at least the vague elements. It involves a mysterious figure showing up in a town in Germany during the Middle Ages, both scaring away a plague of rats from the settlement and then luring scores of children away from the town. But the question is; what is the actual back story to the tale of the Pied Piper, and was it based on any events which actually occurred in the town of Hamelin in the Late Medieval period? The Pied Piper appeared at Hamelin in 1284. According to legend, the town was suffering from a rat infestation. Having succeeded in his task, the mayor refused to pay the Piper, offering him a tokenistic sum of just 50 guilders. Infuriated, the Piper is said to have now determined to steal away the town’s children in revenge. On the Feast of St John and St Paul on the 26th of June 1284, and that the Piper, returning to the town, dressed now all in green, lured off 130 children from the town of Hamelin. The Piper then led them into a local cave, and they were never seen again. Now, was any of this true? It would be easy to dismiss this as a complete myth. But research across the twentieth and early twenty-first century has produced several plausible theories for how this might have corresponded to some actual events at the town of Hamelin in the late thirteenth century. Some are less believable than others. For instance, it has been suggested that the disappearance of the children from the town might be linked to a form of mass psychogenic illness, one which created a dancing mania amongst the children. Contemporary records attest to such outbreaks of mass mania in Germany during the thirteenth century, so as unlikely as this scenario seems, it is still possible. Another theory is that the children were recruited to join a new crusade to the Holy Land, which had been ongoing since the late eleventh century. And yet another theory posits that the Pied Piper is a symbolic character used as a symbol for the outbreak of the bubonic plague in the town of Hamelin, or some other severe disease, one that killed most of the town’s children. The tale today is legendary. It has even given a name to a popular saying throughout the Anglophone world; “He who pays the piper plays the tune.”
- Egyptian and British scientists have unveiled a facial reconstruction of Ramses II, having used computer tomography (CT) software to “digitally unwrap” the mummy of the famous Ancient Egyptian pharaoh. The joint scientific project allowed historians for the first time to observe what the ruler looked like at different points in his life. “This is the only scientific facial reconstruction of Ramesses II based on the CT scan of his actual mummy,” explained professor Sahar Saleem of Cairo University, who led the project, adding that previous attempts were “mostly artistic, based on his mummy’s face.” The initial rendering showed researchers what Ramses II looked like at the time of his death at the age of 90. Imaging experts then used that image to reverse the aging process and reveal what the pharaoh was like at the younger age of 45.
