  • [The Facebook Papers] Documents shared with CNN as part of a US Securities and Exchange Commission investigation show that Facebook knew it was being used to incite violence in Ethiopia and did little to combat it. According to the documents, Facebook employees repeatedly raised concerns over the company’s failure to stop the proliferation of misinformation and violence-inciting posts in Ethiopia and other at-risk countries. Facebook, through a spokesperson, insists it has done enough to curb violence on the platform, while rights groups and whistleblowers argue their efforts are underfunded and quasi-performative.

  • [The Facebook Papers] Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has accused whistleblowers and the media of plotting against the company, which remains under pressure over reports that the platform ignored hate speech and misinformation in an effort to maximise profits. “My view is that what we are seeing is a coordinated effort to selectively use leaked documents to paint a false picture of our company”, Zuckerberg told investors during a Monday call. Referring to whistleblowers’ claims that Facebook prioritises profits over safety, he said that “it makes it a good soundbite to say that we [the company] don’t solve these impossible tradeoffs because we’re just focused on making money, but the reality is these questions are not primarily about our business, but about balancing different difficult social values”.

  • A minister in India’s Maharashtra state has attacked anti-drug agency officer Sameer Wankhede, accusing him of extortion and targeting Bollywood stars who do not pay up. On Tuesday morning, the state minister for Minority Affairs, Nawab Malik, claimed that Wankhede had illegally tapped phones. “Sameer Wankhede, through two people in Mumbai and Thane, is illegally intercepting the mobile phones of some people,” said Malik, who posted an anonymous letter which he claims he received from an officer of the anti-drug agency Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

  • Elon Musk’s SpaceX company has upgraded the toilet system on the Crew Dragon spacecraft after running into several problems during previous launches, media reported. Bill Gerstenmaier, SpaceX engineer and vice president of build and flight reliability, said that the company provided all necessary information on design changes to NASA engineers, studying the modification in time for the launch of a new Crew Dragon flight on October 31.

  • A minister in the Indian state of Haryana, Anil Vij, on Tuesday said that the DNA of former Jammu and Kashmir State Chief Mehbooba Mufti is defective. “Mehbooba Mufti’s DNA is defective, she has to prove how much of an Indian she is”, Minister Vij said a day after Mufti questioned the outrage of many people in the country over some Kashmiris celebrating the Pakistan team’s victory over India. On Monday, police in Jammu and Kashmir registered complaints against college students for celebrating Pakistan’s cricket victory over India in a T20 World Cup cricket match in Dubai.

  • Scientists from the National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (NRNU MEPhI) have demonstrated that their proposed model for the formation of primordial black holes in the form of clusters does not contradict new observations of gravitational waves. The existence of gravitational waves was predicted about a century ago, but due to the extreme weakness of the predicted effects, scientists have long been unable to either confirm or refute their existence. Ultimately, the LIGO and VIRGO collaborations experimentally proved the existence of gravitational waves on 14 September 2015. This discovery was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017.

  • Approximately 300,000 Swedes in a nation of over 10 million are estimated to have an impaired sense of smell after COVID-19. Given the fact that the Nordic country only has two odour and taste clinics, this has led to long queues with hundreds upon hundreds of patients, the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reported. While most regain their sense of smell after a few weeks, some get permanent aberrations that include a diminished or distorted sense of smell. In the most extreme cases, food smells “like a soup of cigarette butts and rotten meat”.

  • Last year, the Scandinavian flag carrier cut 5,000 employees, or 40 percent of its workforce, and received massive credit tranches from the Danish and Swedish governments, its main shareholders, to survive the crisis and stay afloat. “When I see what the market looks like today, how our clients are changing, and the size of our debt, it’s absolutely clear that we have to do things very differently”, SAS CEO Anko Van der Werff, who took over in July, told Danish business newspaper Finans.

  • The headquarters of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in Westminsterhave been scaled by protesters from Animal Rebellion – an organisation fighting for animal rights and who promote a plant-based food system. The activists appear to be demanding that the UK government stop funding the meat industry and pour money into alternative food systems instead. “The protesters have said that they will take action until the government defunds meat and subsidises a plant-based transition”, the group said on Twitter, having shared a picture showing the demonstrators scaling the DEFRA building.

  • Bezos’ Blue Origin and Sierra Space announced in a Monday news release that they, and at least four other companies, have embarked on a plan to develop ‘Orbital Reef’: a low Earth orbit space station that will be commercially developed, owned, and operated. The issuance detailed that operators of the “mixed-use business park” plan to minimize cost and complexity for both traditional space operators and novice arrivals through the incorporation of reusable space transportation and modern, ‘smart’ design configured with advanced automation logistics. Boeing, Redwire Space, Genesis Engineering, and Arizona State University will assist in building Orbital Reef, and have been assigned a number of tasks.

  • Police officers, firefighters and other employees for the New York City municipal government have gathered in the thousands to protest a vaccine mandate for the novel coronavirus and temporarily blocked Manhattan-bound traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. There are currently about 46,000 unvaccinated city employees who face termination if they do not get a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by the November 1 deadline. “Due to a protest, all Manhattan-bound lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge are currently blocked. Expect delays and consider alternate routes,” the New York Police Department said in a statement. According to footage on social media, thousands of city employees are peacefully marching across the Brooklyn Bridge chanting “Let’s Go Brandon.

Pillar Of Shame

The University of Hong Kong has said a statue commemorating the Tiananmen Square massacre must be removed. The Pillar Of Shame depicts dozens of torn and twisted bodies and was at the forefront of vigils held in the city to commemorate the 1989 crackdown. The university said the decision was “based on the latest risk assessment and legal advice” without expanding on this explanation. Tiananmen is still a heavily censored topic in modern China. The anniversary was marked annually in Hong Kong until it was banned by authorities in 2020, citing Covid measures.

La Palma

The geodesic network of stations installed on La Palma has detected an elevation of more than 10 centimeters in the last 24 hours, and a deformation towards the south in station LP03, the closest to the eruptive centers of the La Palma volcano, reported the National Geographic Institute (IGN). In contrast, a slight deflation is maintained at the most remote stations, possibly related to deep seismicity, notes the IGN. The amplitude of the volcanic tremor signal is maintained at medium high levels, with intensification pulses. The scattering cloud of sulfur dioxide (SO2) reached 2,000 meters in height at 8:00 am on Tuesday. The average height of the ash column and gases emitted by the volcano reached 3,800 meters yesterday, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DSN). The DSN points out that the meteorological conditions favor air quality and currently make airport operations in the Canary Islands satisfactory. Regarding seismicity, the IGN has located, since the previous report, 184 earthquakes in the area affected by the volcanic reactivation of Cumbre Vieja, 17 of which have been felt by the population. Of all the earthquakes located, 80 have a magnitude equal to or greater than 3.0 mbLg. The earthquake that occurred at 7.05 am on Tuesday was the largest (4.2) in the period analyzed. In addition, five earthquakes have been located at depths around 30 kilometers. The rest of the hypocenters of the period are located at a shallower depth, around 12 kilometers.
