- A French court has determined that an employee cannot be fired simply for not wanting to have fun and being reluctant to take part in team-building activities that include “excessive alcoholism” and “promiscuity.” The ruling was handed down by Paris’ Court of Cassation on November 9, but was reported just this week. The legal battle involved an unnamed employee known as Mr T and Cubik Partners, a management consultancy and training company which promotes its “fun and pro” approach, and promises to “make management more human again,” according to its website. Despite this, Mr T apparently had difficulties embracing corporate culture, as Cubik Partners fired him in 2015 over “professional inadequacy,” saying he failed to cultivate the company’s party atmosphere.
- The Finnish authorities have decided to give back Russian railcars detained earlier this year due to sanctions, Moscow’s trade mission in Finland said on Friday. According to its data, more than 800 loaded and empty railcars were seized as of early November. The decision to return the railcars was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 15 following an appeal from Finnish railway operators and the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency (Traficom). According to the appeal, the storage and maintenance of the trains turned out to be too costly and difficult for the rail system operators. In addition, it was noted that some of the railcars contained hazardous substances.
- Twitter chief Elon Musk has said he is open to creating his own “alternative” smartphone in the event tech giants move to deplatform his social media site, suggesting he could be left with no other option. Responding to a proposal from conservative pundit Liz Wheeler that the billionaire should “produce his own smartphone” if Apple and Google were to kick Twitter off of their app stores, Musk said he would not rule it out, though voiced some reluctance toward the concept. “I certainly hope it does not come to that, but, yes, if there is no other choice, I will make an alternative phone,” he said on Friday.
- A team of scientists, with systems biologist Nikolaus Rajewsky of the Max-Delbrück-Center for Molecular Medicine as the lead author, has found a trait that octopus brains share with humans: a vast repertoire of microRNA in their neural tissue. “This,” Rajewsky says, “is what connects us to the octopus!” Soft-bodied cephalopods such as octopuses (invertebrates) are exceptionally intelligent with a highly complex distributed nervous system and they evolved independently from vertebrates. A complex nervous system and intelligence are relatively common traits in vertebrates, but are rare among invertebrates. Cephalopods’ ability to rapidly edit their RNA sequences on the fly in order to adapt to their environment is yet another surprise, as adaptation normally starts with the DNA, and those changes are passed on to the RNA. The researchers suggest that “mi[cro]RNAs and, perhaps, their specialized neuronal functions are deeply linked and possibly required for the emergence of complex brains in animals.
- “The ongoing research by the United States to enhance the pathogenic properties of microorganisms is forcing us to rethink the statements of US officials in charge of countering biological threats. One such official is John Bolton, who [previously] served as the US national security advisor,” Russian RCBP Troops chief Igor Kirillov said in a briefing Saturday. “Consider Bolton’s September 2000 report ‘Rebuilding America’s Defenses,'” Kirillov said, recalling the paper’s call for the US to take steps to maintain its military superiority deep into the 21st century. “The paper noted that to achieve a position of world leadership, the United States must maintain its military superiority, and one of the ways to do so was the creation of biological weapons. At the same time, the paper indicated that advanced forms of biological weapons capable of targeting certain genotypes could change the role of this type of weapon – from a deterrent into a beneficial policy tool,” the senior officer said.
- It turns out that rats are capable of feeling the music and responding to the beats, with a new study published in Science Advances revealing that the rodents are able to vibe to Lady Gaga, Queen, and even appreciate some Mozart. “Some of us believe that music is very special to human culture. But I believe that its origin is somehow inherited from our progenitors,” says Hirokazu Takahashi, a mechanical engineer at the University of Tokyo who studies the brain and led the study. Aside from humans, parrots are well-known to be able to groove to music, but rats are new to join the party. In order to study the rodents’ music preferences, Takahashi and his colleagues put on Mozart’s “Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major” (K. 448). While the music was playing, the team observed how rats responded to it – both visually and with wireless accelerometers that were surgically attached to the rats’ bodies. Among other songs the laboratory rats got to check out were Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” and Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.”
- A veritable treasure trove of mummies with golden tongues have been discovered during excavation work in the Quesna necropolis in Egypt’s Monufia governorate. Researchers believe that real tongues were removed during the embalming process and replaced with the gold amulet to enable the deceased to speak with Osiris, the “lord of the underworld”, in the afterlife. Osiris was one of the main deities in ancient Egypt, and references to him date back to the funerary texts of the so-called ‘Age of the Pyramid Builders’ between 2700 and 2200 BC, when it is believed that the practice of mummification first started.
- Iran’s Fars News Agency, one of the largest multi-language news services in the Islamic Republic, has been hit by a massive hack attack which has left its website inaccessible. “Following a complex hacking operation and cyberattack Friday evening, some users’ access to the Fars News Agency’s website was disrupted,” the agency said in a statement on its Telegram page Saturday. “Cyberattacks on the Fars News Agency are carried out almost non-stop from different countries, including the Occupied Territories,” the agency said, using the term often employed by Iran’s authorities to refer to Israel. The agency said its websites’ infrastructure is spread across servers in three data centers, and supported by a network of 500 computers, and that combing through them in search for bugs could take several days to complete.
- Blanca Arellano, a 51-year-old Mexican woman searching for love on the expanses of the internet, reportedly informed her family at the end of July that she had gotten a ticket to Lima, Peru and was off to finally meet with a man she had struck up a romantic relationship with online. Arellano first encountered Juan Pablo Jesus Villafuerte, 37, at an online gambling forum, according to Peruvian media outlets. After interacting with the young man, a resident of the coastal city of Huacho, for several months, Arellano finally agreed to take a plane to Peru to see her love interest in person. After flying in, the woman had informed her concerned niece, Karla Arellano, that all was well. Increasingly worried, Karla Arellano took to social media, posting her Aunt’s photo. “Juan Pablo Villafuerte was arrested on charges of human organs trafficking,” Peru’s general attorney was cited as saying at a news conference. According to reports, the investigation soon uncovered that Villafuerte posted a series of videos on TikTok not long after Arellano went missing.
- British physicist Stephen Wolfram believes extraterrestrial intelligent life is inevitable, but with a caveat. Although intelligent life is inevitable, we will never find it. Wolfram says that in order to compress more and more information into our communication signals – be they mobile phone conversations or computers – we remove all redundancy or pattern. If anything in a signal repeats, then it can be deleted. But this process of removing any pattern from a signal makes the signal look more and more random – in fact, pretty much like the random radio “noise” that rains down on Earth coming from stars and interstellar gas clouds. According to Wolfram, if someone beamed our own 21st-century communication signals at us from space we would be hard pressed to determine whether they were artificial or natural. So what chance do we have of distinguishing an ET communication from the general background radio static of the cosmos?
- A team of astronomers has developed the most immense catalogue to date of galaxies that are birthplaces of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs). Using several top-tier observatories (W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, Gemini Observatories in Hawaii and Chile, and Magellan Telescopes at Las Campanas Observatory) and combining them with data acquired from the Hubble Space Telescope as well as NASA’s retired Spitzer Space Telescope, the scientists identified the starting points of 84 SGRBs – four times as many as before. Among their findings, they discovered that young, active star-forming galaxies stand for 85% of the studied SGRBs. “This is the largest catalog of SGRB host galaxies to ever exist, so we expect it to be the gold standard for many years to come,” research leader and Northwestern graduate student Anya Nugent said in a statement.
