  • The ultra-high-energy neutrino was spotted by deep-sea detectors and could point to a massive cosmic event. An observatory still under construction at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea has spotted what could be the most energetic neutrino ever detected. Such ultra-high-energy neutrinos — tiny subatomic particles that travel at nearly the speed of light — have been known to exist for only a decade or so, and are thought to be messengers from some of the Universe’s most cataclysmic events, such as growth spurts of supermassive black holes in distant galaxies.Neutrino physicist João Coelho stunned researchers at the Neutrino 2024 conference in Milan, Italy, on 18 June, when he revealed the discovery only at the very end of his talk. The neutrino detection was “a fantastic event”, says Francis Halzen, a physicist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He added that the observation highlights the potential of the Astroparticle Research with Cosmics in the Abyss (ARCA) observatory — a forest of detectors on ‘strings’ attached to the 3,500-metre-deep sea floor southeast of the Italian island of Sicily.

  • Congressman Matt Gaetz (R-FL) has introduced legislation to allow federal income tax payments to be made in Bitcoin. A bill aims to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, instructing the Treasury Secretary to develop a plan for accepting Bitcoin. According to Gaetz, his proposal aims to modernize the tax payment process by allowing federal income tax to be paid with BTC.

  • A Biden administration official pressured a top gender medical organization to quickly issue ‘standards of care’ guidelines for transgender individuals to remove minimum age recommendations for transgender procedures, despite a lack of scientific justification. The urgency to release these guidelines, as stated in the documents, was to align with the health policies of the Biden administration, with one WPATH member noting the administration’s “charge” to finalize the project.

  • In an anonymous effort to help secure Julian Assange’s freedom, an anonymous Bitcoiner donated over 8 Bitcoin, worth around $500,000, to help Assange’s family pay off the debt incurred by his charter jet and settlement expenses. On June 24, Assange was released from the high-security Belmarsh prison in the United Kingdom after reaching a plea agreement with U.S. authorities. Shortly after his release, he departed the U.K. on a private plane from a London airport to Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory. Assange appeared in a district court in Saipan on June 26, where he pleaded guilty to one charge of breaching the U.S. Espionage Act by leaking classified documents. The journey was planned to prevent Assange from touching foot on American soil.

  • Ukraine is rich in mineral resources, with diverse deposits of fossil fuels, metals and industrial minerals. The country is a major producer of iron ore, coal, natural gas and oil, among others. Washington “cannot afford” to allow Russia to achieve victory in the Ukraine conflict as this would mean losing direct access to vast mineral assets. That was the view of US Senator Lindsey Graham* in an interview with ‘Face the Nation’ on CBS News in June. “They’re sitting on 10 to $12 trillion of critical minerals in Ukraine. They could be the richest country in all of Europe,” Graham said. “If we help Ukraine now, they can become the best business partner we ever dreamed of, that $10 to $12 trillion of critical mineral assets could be used by Ukraine and the West,” he added.

  • One of the migrants who survived the shipwreck in the Ionian Sea is accused of murder: he strangled girl who was with him on the boat, which sank last week near the Calabrian coast. While the sailing boat was already adrift, the migrant allegedly vented his violence on a 16-year-old Iraqi girl, daughter of another survivor, causing her death by suffocation.

  • French President Emmanuel Macron’s allies could distance themselves from him ahead of snap elections as the leader has become a “toxic brand” due to his waning popularity. Soon after Macron called snap elections earlier this month, dozens of lawmakers who initially supported the French leader now want him to keep a “low profile” as his behavior grows increasingly “erratic.” Even political heavyweights such as French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire and Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, once Macron’s closest allies, are keeping their distance.

  • Tyler Cherry, who was named associate communications director at the White House earlier this month, has deleted nearly 2,500 posts on X (formerly Twitter). Before his promotion, the openly gay LGBTQ activist held a similar position in the Department of the Interior. Israel-based analyst Eitan Fischberger noted that Cherry had used the hashtag #FreePalestine in the past and criticized the US government for selling weapons to Israel in old posts. Cherry was also criticized for now-deleted posts on other issues. According to screenshots circulating on social media, in 2015 he claimed that “the modern-day police system is a direct evolution of slave patrols and lynch mobs,” and called in 2018 for the abolition of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

  • Russia’s Finance Ministry has proposed increasing the state fee for divorce almost eightfold starting in 2025. According to the report, the fees for those seeking to end their marriage could rise from 650 rubles ($7.45) to 5,000 rubles ($57.31). This will apply to couples who do not have common minor children and are divorcing by mutual consent, as well as those seeking divorce through the court. If both parties consent, they can submit a joint application for divorce to the Civil Acts Registration Office. In other cases, ending a marriage will require a judicial procedure.

  • Concentrations of ozone-damaging aluminum oxides in Earth’s atmosphere could increase by 650% in the coming decades due to a rise in the number of defunct satellites burning up during reentry, a first-of-a-kind study has found. And, as satellite megaconstellations continue to pique the interests of private companies, this could be pretty bad news for our planet’s protective shield known as the ozone layer. The authors of the study say rising concentrations of satellite-induced pollutants could cause “potentially significant” ozone depletion and thus thwart the ozone layer’s slow and steady recovery.

  • China’s Chang’e 6 mission has successfully delivered to Earth the first-ever samples from the far side of the moon. The samples eventually reached Earth on June 25, touching down as planned in grasslands in Inner Mongolia. But what became of the lander that collected the lunar material? The Chang’e 6 lander, meanwhile, remains on the moon. It carried other payloads, including a panoramic imager and a tiny rover.

  • A binary system containing a massive star and what is probably a black hole, and which together are a source of intense X-rays, has been shown to be a smaller-scale example of some of the most luminous quasars in the universe. The new findings, from an international team that used NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer spacecraft (IXPE), describe how an X-ray binary system located about 24,000 light-years away in our Milky Way galaxy is amplifying its X-ray emission in a funnel-shaped cavity that encircles the probable black hole. The system, Cygnus X-3, was discovered in the early 1970s when radio telescopes spotted powerful jets radiating out from it at nearly the speed of light. The radio emission from these jets lasts for a few days, before switching off, only to turn back on again later.

Archaeo Histories

The underground city of Naours, located in the Picardy region of northern France; is an extensive complex of tunnels and underground rooms dating back to the Middle Ages. This underground shelter, known locally as “many”, was used by the inhabitants of the area to protect themselves from invaders and war conflicts, such as the Norman invasions and religious wars. The complex consists of approximately 300 rooms, along with a series of galleries, chapels, stables and ventilation shafts, stretching for about 3 kilometers.
