- Late on Thursday, the United States airstrike targeted the facilities allegedly belonging to Iran-backed militia in Syria near the Iraqi border, according to the reports by U.S. media. The U.S. reportedly carried out one strike, and no coalition forces took part in this action. The strikes targeted positions of the Iranian-allied Kataib Hezbollah and Kataib Sayyid al-Shuhada right on Syria’s border with Iraq. The US said the strikes were a response to February 15 Erbil rocket attacks, which killed a civilian contractor and injured eight others including an American service member. According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the strikes claimed the lives of 22 Iraqi fighters of Kataib Hezbollah and other Poplar Mobilization Units (PMU) factions. The monitoring group’s claims were most likely exaggerated. An Iraqi official said that six PMU fighters were killed and 11 others were injured. Meanwhile, the Sabereen News, a Telegram channel close to PMU factions, reported the death of a single PMU fighter.
- A secret paper from the Swiss Federal Council (Swiss Executive) was leaked to the Swiss Newspaper “Der Blick” divulging that the Federal Council is considering granting owners of restaurants, theatres, cinemas, and more, as well as private event organizers, the right to allow access to those people only, who have had their corona virus shots. In addition to the Blick, Swiss Radio and Television (SRG) repeated this news item in the morning of 23 February. SRG, the Swiss fear-inducing propaganda broadcasting system, also linked so-called “corona deniers” to alleged “anti-Semitism”.
- Cybersecurity researchers today unwrapped a new campaign aimed at spying on vulnerable Tibetan communities globally by deploying a malicious Firefox extension on target systems. Threat actors aligned with the Chinese Communist Party’s state interests delivered a customized malicious Mozilla Firefox browser extension that facilitated access and control of users’ Gmail accounts. The researchers said the attacks were detected in January and February 2021, a pattern that has continued since March 2020.

- Washington has claimed to have totally withdrawn its military forces from Somalia, but the recent images of the type of heavily-modified private passenger aircraft used by civilian contractors points to ongoing operations of a more secretive nature in the East African nation. One image spotted by The Drive’s “The War Zone” features a King Air turboprop aircraft of the type used by contractors, but with a civil registration number that corresponds to no known aircraft – known colloquially as a “ghost plane.” According to the outlet, the aircraft’s civil registration number N27557, is not assigned to any aircraft known to the US Federal Aviation Administration. However, a company called Gloome Aviation has apparently paid to reserve the number for a year beginning in June 2020.
- A vehicle of the Russian military’s seminal air-defence system — the S-400 Triumf missile systems — was caught in a traffic accident on the Mozhayskoye highway outside Moscow on Thursday. A chain-reaction accident involving five vehicles — a Kamaz truck, two passenger cars, a military traffic police minibus and an S-400 Triumf launch vehicle. The S-400 was moving at the helm of a bigger convoy. The other five launch vehicles of the convoy seem to have put on the brakes in time.

- Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador quietly rocked the agribusiness world with his New Year’s Eve decree to phase out use of the herbicide glyphosate and the cultivation of genetically modified corn. In banning glyphosate, the decree cites the precautionary principle and the growing body of scientific research showing the dangers of the chemical, the active ingredient in Bayer/Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide. The government had stopped imports of glyphosate since late 2019, citing the World Health Organization’s warning that the chemical is a “probable carcinogen.” The immediate ban on permits for cultivation of GM corn formalizes current restrictions, ordered by Mexican courts in 2013 when a citizen lawsuit challenged government permitting of experimental GM corn planting by Monsanto and other multinational seed companies on the grounds of the contamination threat they posed to Mexico’s rich store of native corn varieties.

Nearly 5 000 earthquakes hit Reykjanes peninsula in 2 days, Iceland.
The swarm includes two earthquakes above M5.0 — M5.7 at 10:05 UTC and M5.0 at 10:30 UTC, the Icelandic Met Office (IMO) reported at 09:05 UTC on February 26. The quakes were followed by M4.8 near Kleifarvatn at 12:37 UTC. The IMO’s SIL system has detected 11 earthquakes over M4.0 and many larger than M3.0. The earthquakes have been felt all over the SV-part of Iceland, north to Húnaþing and west to Ísafjörður.
