India’s online retail platform – Quikr – has allowed users to buy and sell live dogs, cats, birds, exotic fishes, roosters and goats. The Quikr platform is a content aggregator that connects buyers and sellers for various commodities, including live animals. According to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Pet Shop) Rules 2018, the sale of animals online is illegal. Currently, there are over 4500 animals on sale on the Quikr website.
The e-retail website also offers free adoptions of roosters and goats which shows that “they may be procured for illegal fighting or for slaughter.” The online sale of animals has been widely opposed by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India who has demanded that Quikr stop animal advertisements.

A business jet that was reported stolen in Mexico crashed in a Guatemalan jungle on Wednesday near a hidden airstrip after making a mysterious trip to Venezuela, leaving two men dead near an onboard stash of drugs and weapons. In a statement, the Guatemalan military confirmed the crash of the Hawker 800 twin-engine jet in a mountainous area in the Central American country’s Alta Verapaz region, but said the men had not yet been identified. Next to their bodies, 3 kilograms of cocaine were found in three packages along with unspecified guns. The jet took off from the Cuernavaca airport, located about 45 miles (72 km) south of Mexico City, around midday on Tuesday without authorization or a flight plan, then landed at Zulia airport in northwestern Venezuela near the border with Colombia several hours later, the Guatemalan military said.

Magawa

Throughout his “career”, a giant African rat named Magawa has discovered 39 landmines and 28 undetonated explosives. The British charity veterinary organisation PDSA has decided to award a rat named Magawa its Gold Medal for “lifesaving bravery and devotion to duty”, as the rodent has been trained to detect landmines in Cambodia. Of the 30 animals to receive the award, Magawa is the first rat. The seven-year-old rodent is over 70 centimetres tall and weighs 1.2 kilograms. He has been trained by the Belgian charity APOPO, which has been raising animals known as Hero Rats since the 1990s to detect mines. After a year of training, the animals are certified.

A Chicago man known as the ‘Census Cowboy’ faces a felony charge after riding his horse more than 7 miles down a freeway without the proper footwear, severely injuring the animal, which prosecutors say may have to be euthanized. Adam Hollingsworth, 33, was arrested earlier this week on charges linked to animal cruelty, reckless conduct, trespassing and other traffic offenses after staging a stunt on the Dan Ryan Expressway on horseback, shutting down the freeway as he rode the animal at galloping speed on rough pavement, critically wounding it.
