  • Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki has warned the EU against acting “with a gun to our heads,” claiming Warsaw would defend itself by any means available if the EU launched a “third World War” by holding back Covid-19 recovery funding. The strongly worded statement came after the European Commission threatened to leave Poland without billions in grants and loans as a response to a controversial decision by the country’s Constitutional Tribunal, which prioritized national laws over those of the European Court of Justice (ECJ).

  • In the Kremlin’s view, it is NATO that is encroaching on its security in its immediate neighborhood, especially by expanding its activities in Ukraine and offering the latter full membership, in principle if not – yet – in reality. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko has warned that what he describes as NATO turning “the Black Sea into an arena of military confrontation” is “an extremely dangerous path fraught with the risk of military incidents and escalation.”

  • Launched in 2019, News Tab is a Facebook product that curates and promotes articles from various publishers selected by the platform. The feature contains a main tier, with news from mainstream media outlets like the New York Times and Washington Post, which are paid for their content. Breitbart is part of a secondary, non-paid tier of tailored news delivered to cater to a user’s interests. In a message titled “Get Breitbart out of News Tab” and posted on the Facebook ’s racial-justice chat board last year, an unidentified employee shared screenshots of BLM-related headlines from the news outlet that, they said, were “emblematic of a concerted effort at Breitbart and similarly hyperpartisan sources” to “paint Black Americans and Black-led movements in a very negative way.” “It is not news to us that Facebook has effectively suppressed our content,” a Breitbart spokeswoman told the WSJ, adding that the company’s content had been, in its view, far more accurate and popular with Facebook’s users than the paid content from mainstream news media outlets.

  • Two Polish soldiers have been taken to hospital after asylum seekers staged an assault on the frontier with Belarus, throwing stones at the border fence. The group of migrants has been stuck in no man’s land for over two months. According to the Polish Border Guard, the “attempts of violent crossing into Poland were thwarted.” “Over the weekend, two attempts at a border assault were recorded. Aggressive groups of about 60 and 70 people threw stones and branches at border guard officers and soldiers of the Polish army. Two soldiers were hospitalized,” a statement said. One of the soldiers was hit by a branch, and the other with a stone, both in the face. Warsaw has accused Belarusian soldiers of working with the asylum seekers, suggesting they were wearing civilian clothes to blend in.

  • A renowned Australian cartoonist has said he lost his prime spot in a Melbourne-based newspaper after he drew parallels between the Tiananmen Square protests and Covid-19 vaccine mandates in a new cartoon. Cartoonist Michael Leunig, sometimes referred to as Australia’s “living national treasure,” has revealed that he was forced out of his position on the editorial page of The Age daily newspaper after publishing a political cartoon criticizing the government’s push for mandatory vaccination. Leunig’s cartoon shows a man staring down a tank, with its main gun being replaced by a syringe.

  • The University of Cambridge is reportedly adding “trigger warnings” to children’s classics in its archive, flagging “harmful content relating to slavery, colonialism and racism”. More than 10,000 books are apparently under review. The project, reportedly paid for by a £80,633 grant from the taxpayer-funded UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, will apparently expose authors who have been “offensive to historically enslaved, colonised or denigrated people”. It is being conducted jointly with the University of Florida, and has also received funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities in the US, according to the Daily Mail.

  • When the Cumbre Viejo volcano on La Palma began erupting on September 10, it immediately became the focus of intense attention because that island is the only place in the world which can generate a Tsunami wave, which is capable of literally destroying the entire east coast of North America. Computer models showed the tsunami would begin hitting the US east coast within 7 to 8 hours, and would smash almost all the major cities, with a wall of water 30 meters to fifty meters high. That would mean a wave 100-164 FEET tall, lasting 5 to 45 minutes as it flooded 12-15 miles inland.

  • Joe Biden has ordered the remaining files on President John F. Kennedy’s assassination to remain hidden until next December, citing the coronavirus pandemic. Biden’s memo states that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the National Archivist have been prevented from checking in with every agency affected by the files, and can’t determine whether releasing the unredacted documents would impact national security.

  • People are holding mass rallies in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, demanding a transfer of power from the military to a civilian government after Al-Hadath TV reported that Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok was under house arrest – as well as four other cabinet ministers. The coup was reported just a month before the expiration of the transitional Sovereign Council of Sudan, which assumed power in 2019, after ousting longtime President Omar al-Bashir. In November 2021, the council was expected to transfer power to the civilian government.

  • Biden’s chief medical adviser, Anthony Fauci, is under fire for allegedly lying to Congress about how the National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded controversial research into bat coronaviruses in China, since the agency admitted to participating in gain-of-function virus research, contrary to Fauci’s earlier denial. Aside from accusations of lying to the US Congress, Dr Anthony Fauci is now facing calls for his resignation and arrest over his alleged involvement in cruel experiments on beagle puppies which were said to have been infected with disease-causing parasites. The calls have intensified with the emergence of a graphic video showing brutal scenes of puppies being fixated and tortured, with some of the clips showing the dogs’ bodies being removed and put into trash cans. The chilling footage emerged shortly after the hashtag #ArrestFauci began flourishing on Twitter, being propelled to trends after the presidential medical adviser was accused by the non-profit organisation White Coat Waste Project of funding the cruel experiments with taxpayer dollars.

  • [The Facebook Papers] Frances Haugen, a former Facebook employee-turned-whistleblower, provided the Wall Street Journal with documents that became the basis for the outlet’s ‘Facebook Files’ series. Facebook was aware that its flagship social media platform fostered violence and severe episodes of misinformation in India, according to documents leaked by Haugen and obtained by US media outlets. According to the report, the flaggings did not occur because the system was not sophisticated enough to spot such dangerous content when it was written in Bengali and Hindi. The languages were labelled as priorities for “automation on violating hostile speech.” In a statement to the Associated Press, Facebook highlighted that it has “invested significantly in technology to find hate speech in various languages, including Hindi and Bengali,” which has “reduced the amount of hate speech that people see by half” in 2021. “We are improving enforcement and are committed to updating our policies as hate speech evolves online,” said the Facebook spokesperson.

  • [The Facebook Papers] Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen has said that platform’s use by criminal groups outside English-language markets, including human traffickers and armed groups in Ethiopia, was a key factor motivating her decision to leave the company with a trove of documents detailing its shady underside. “I did what I thought was necessary to save the lives of people, especially in the global south, who I think are being endangered by Facebook’s prioritization of profits over people,” the millionaire data engineer told The Observer on Sunday. “If I hadn’t brought those documents forward that was never going to come to light,” she said. Haugen also thinks Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a key obstacle keeping the trillion-dollar tech company from making changes to its policies.

  • In an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN about the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi noted that “the most important vote right now in the Congress of the United States is the vote to respect the sanctity of the vote, the fundamental basis of our democracy. So, if there were one vote that the filibuster could enable to go forward, that would be the vote, and enable so much more, because we’re talking about stopping the suppression of the vote and the nullification of the elections”. After Pelosi communicated her desire to eliminate the filibuster, her brain may have filibustered her mouth from saying the name “Donald Trump”, as she noted that “when what’s-his-name was president and the Republicans were in power, Mitch McConnell pulled back the filibuster with simple majorities”.

  • Research into the millennia-old mummified remains of a nobleman has revealed that advanced mummification techniques were employed in Ancient Egypt much earlier than originally believed, according to The Observer. The mummy of Khufy, a high-ranking official who lived during the time of the Old Kingdom in the third millennium BC, reportedly exhibits considerable sophistication in both the mummification process and the materials involved, which, as the newspaper points out, “was not thought to have been achieved until 1,000 years later.” “If this is indeed an Old Kingdom mummy, all books about mummification and the history of the Old Kingdom will need to be revised,” said Professor Salima Ikram, head of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo. “This would completely turn our understanding of the evolution of mummification on its head. The materials used, their origins, and the trade routes associated with them will dramatically impact our understanding of Old Kingdom Egypt.”

  • The first course in the world for exorcists starts today in Rome. The course on the ministry of the exorcism and prayer of liberation that it offers an academic and interdisciplinary research. The course is based in the Pontifical Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum of Rome, in collaboration with the Group for Socio-religious Research and Information (GRIS) of Bologna and will address a wide range of issues: anthropological, phenomenological, social, theological, liturgical, canonical, pastoral, spiritual, medical, neuroscientific, pharmacological, symbolic, criminological, legal and juridical ones.

  • The British Astronomical Association (BAA) is reporting another strong outburst of Comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann. The volcanic comet suddenly brightened 10-fold on Oct. 23.75 UT when a sunlit vent opened, spewing ‘cryomagma’ into space. Comet 29P is one of the strangest objects in the solar system. In fact, it strains the definition of “comet.” 29P is a ball of ice 60 km wide (much larger than a typical comet) trapped in a planet-like orbit between Jupiter and Saturn. It appears to be festooned with ice volcanoes which erupt ~20 times a year. A rapidfire “super-eruption” of 4 volcanoes in late September created an expanding shell of vaporized cryomagma, which astronomers have been monitoring. Yesterday’s eruption propelled a new compact shell into the old larger one. 29P rotates once every ~58 days. As sunlight sweeps across its frozen surface, cryovolcanoes erupt under the high sun. “The latest eruption has taken place some 59 days after a similar event on August 25th, and may be an example of an outburst from the same cryovolcano erupting a second time on the next rotation of the nucleus.”

As citizens around the world continue to grapple with a global pandemic and the changes it has brought to their everyday lives, many are also expressing a desire for political change.
