- Only days after the UK returned 351 looted artifacts from the holdings of disgraced British art dealer Robin Symes, an archaeologist has alleged that one work in the collection— a wine vase purported to date from the 5th century BCE—is in fact a fake. The Guardian reports that Christos Tsirogiannis, an archaeologist based in Cambridge, said the vase, or an olpe , has obvious evidence of being made in the 1990s. In a scathing assessment, he called the Greeks’ research “absolutely shameful.” The vase was among 351 artifacts dating from the Neolithic period to the early Byzantine that were rescued from Symes’s holdings. Greece’s Ministry of Culture had waged a 17-year-long legal battle to reclaim the heritage objects after Symes’s criminal dealings were uncovered.
- International media consistently reports about whales attacking small sailboats, generally used by affluent Europeans for recreational purposes. Why are orcas attacking boats? Iberian orcas seem to be holding a grudge against sailboats. Since 2020, these sea creatures have damaged vessels roughly 100 times in the waters off Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, data provided by the Atlantic Orca Working Group shows. The number of unsuccessful attempts against boats is five times higher. Orcas do not consider humans as prey and never attack them on purpose, but rather it is the sailboats they seem to dislike. It is suspected that the orcas in question represent a small group of creatures and that there are only two adults among them. Attempted attacks occur almost every week and follow the same scenario – some orcas destroy the rudder, while others bump into the hull.

- The Crimean parliament has unanimously voted to nationalize the assets of Ukrainian oligarchs and politicians on the peninsula, RIA Novosti news agency reported on Wednesday, citing the State Council’s press service. Among the assets is an apartment belonging to Elena Zelenskaya, the wife of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, Crimean Governor Sergey Aksyonov announced on Telegram. More than 130 properties have reportedly been confiscated, among them a cinema, factories, shopping malls, wineries, and banking structures. Last February the Crimean parliament also voted to nationalize about 500 properties belonging to Ukrainian politicians and businessmen. Zelenskaya’s three-room penthouse on the Black Sea coast near the resort city of Yalta is estimated to be worth $800,000. It was bought from a business tycoon in 2013 for just under $164,000. After Zelensky won the presidential election in April 2019, Reuters reported that the price paid for the property was at least 50% lower than the market rate.
- A new brain implant-related algorithm, which is still at a basic research stage, is expected to provide a ray of hope to plenty of people suffering from spinal cord injuries. A “digital bridge” between the brain and spinal cord helped a patient regain his ability to walk after paralysis, a new study has pointed out. The survey refers to Gert-Jan Oskam, a 40-year-old Dutch man, who suffered from a spinal cord injury as a result of a motor bike accident in China twelve years ago. The operation to restore the patient’s health was carried out in July 2021, when medics managed to install implants in his brain and spinal cord that pair with external devices to translate his thoughts into movement.
- Iran has showcased a new ballistic missile named ‘Kheibar’ that reportedly boasts a range of over 1,200 miles (2,000 kilometers) and carries a payload of 1.5 tons. According to a report by Iran’s state-run media outlet IRNA, the rocket needs relatively little time to be prepared for launch, meaning that it can be used as both a strategic and a tactical weapon. The country’s Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiani noted that the ‘Kheibar’ rocket can penetrate enemy air defenses thanks to the radar-evading equipment on board.
- The US Department of Defense (DOD) has been unable to account for about 1 million missing spare parts for its F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, the costliest weapon system in the nation’s history, a government review has found. The lost parts, which include such items as bolts, tires, and landing gear, are valued at about $85 million, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported on Tuesday. “Without DOD taking steps to ensure that these spare parts are accountable under a contract, the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) will be unable to either gain or maintain accountability over these spare parts and will not have data, such as locations, costs, and quantities, needed for financial reporting or to ensure that government interests are protected,” the GAO said.
- China, Spain and Türkiye have received the largest shipments of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea corridor, the Milliyet newspaper reported on Thursday, citing the government in Ankara. More than 30 million tons of grain have been transported by 953 shipments via the route since it opened last August, the paper quoted Turkish Ministry of Commerce official Yusuf Karakas as saying. According to Milliyet, the amount of grain transported corresponds to 16.8 billion loaves of bread.
- China is reportedly currently in talks with Saudi Arabia and Egypt to sell the two Arab states a variety of new weapons, including the Chengdu J-10C, the fighter jet that forms the backbone of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). - The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has spotted Saturn’s moon Enceladus spraying out a huge plume of water vapour, much bigger than any previously seen there. This enormous cloud might contain the chemical ingredients of life, escaping from beneath the moon’s icy surface. In 2005, a NASA spacecraft called Cassini discovered icy particles squirting from Enceladus’s subsurface ocean through cracks in the moon’s surface. But JWST shows that material is spraying much farther than previously thought — many times deeper into space than the size of Enceladus itself. “It’s immense,” said Sara Faggi, a planetary astronomer at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, on 17 May at a conference at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. She declined to provide further details, citing a scientific paper that will be published soon.
