- Joe Biden’s popularity among American voters continues to slip, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll published on Tuesday, which revealed that only 36% of respondents favorably view his presidency. This is the lowest score since he took office. The poll, which gathered responses from a total of 1,005 adults, including 456 Democrats and 358 Republicans, suggests that more than half of Americans (59%) are dissatisfied with Biden’s performance as president. Even Biden’s popularity among fellow Democrats seems to be waning.
- Beverage company Coca-Cola Namibia has launched a new locally produced fruit juice. Company spokesperson Enid Johr said the new juice forms part of plans to expand Coca-Cola’s product portfolio. The juice will come in a variety of flavours, according to the company’s general manager Pottie de Bruyn, and has 10% natural content. Cappy Delight will come in guava, mango and tropical flavours, and Coca-Cola believe it will create the perfect family sharing breakfast occasion at home. “We are witnessing a trend in which the entire fruit juice and sports drink segment is growing globally as consumer tastes and preferences shift,” said De Bruyn.
- Several French cities have begun handing out food vouchers to the population to compensate for increasing prices, the TV channel France 2 reported on Monday. According to the report, citizens are being given coupons for €5, €20 and €30. To date, city administrations have reportedly spent about €37 million (around $40 million) on the issuance of coupons and certificates, as well as other measures to support the population. A document outlining the subsidies has not yet been adopted. However, the mayor offices of some French cities have decided to introduce food coupons on their own, without waiting for an official government decision.
- Unless Russia is quickly defeated in Ukraine, the collective West won’t be able to address climate change in time to save civilization, billionaire financier George Soros told the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday. He also called Russia and China the greatest threats to his concept of open society. Russia sending troops into Ukraine “may have been the beginning of the Third World War and our civilization may not survive it,” Soros told the WEF, and even when the fighting there stops, “the situation will never revert to what it was before.”
- The Russian ruble set another multi-year high against both the US dollar and euro on Wednesday, even as the central bank loosens capital controls. The ruble was trading below 58 to the euro, its strongest level since May 2015, and below 56 against the dollar, its strongest since February 2018. The quotes are according to Moscow Exchange data as of 07:15 GMT. The Russian currency gave up some of the gains later in the session. The ruble continued to strengthen on Wednesday even as the central bank loosens the capital controls initiated in March to protect it from Western sanctions.
- International relations and cooperation minister Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says if Africa continues the culture of exporting raw materials without value addition, then the continent is exporting African jobs to other countries. Nandi-Nadaitwah was speaking yesterday during the discover Namibia intra-Africa expo and business summit, hosted by the Africa Economic Leadership Council at Swakopmund. She said this leaves African youths in poverty, forcing them to risk their lives on the high seas, running after jobs where they will be labelled as illegal immigrants. “The time has come for African young people to leave the continent as a choice and not to be driven out by poverty,” she said. Nandi-Ndaitwah added that the youth should be on the lookout for these opportunities. She said other industries that have a great impact on the continent’s industrialisation and creation of sustainable jobs are agriculture and tourism, complemented by technology.
- Hunter Biden may never fall under scrutiny by his father’s DOJ, but House Republicans are laying the groundwork for a full-court press into the First Son’s finances as we head into this fall’s midterm elections. On Wednesday, the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, fired off numerous letters to banks and the US Treasury Department to demand more information about Hunter Biden and his circle of associates, according to the Wall Street Journal, which has viewed the letters.

- Mexico – Gold medals for teachers cost education ministry 218 million pesos. The federal government’s austerity drive didn’t stop it from spending 218.2 million pesos (US $11 million), according to a contract seen by the newspaper El Universal. Each 42-gram Maestro Altamirano Medal, awarded to teachers who have worked in public or SEP-affiliated private schools for 40 years, cost 65,966 pesos (US $3,325). The SEP purchased the more than 3,000 engraved medals from the jewelry company Talleres de los Ballesteros, which has stores in Mexico City and several states. The contract was awarded directly, that is without a competitive tendering process. It is public but one of its clauses states that the information derived from the two parties entering into the contract as well as all information the SEP provides to the company is confidential.
- Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) investors voted against Egon Durban, the co-head of private equity firm Silver Lake, who partnered with Tesla (TSLA.O) CEO Musk on his abandoned bid to take the electric carmaker private. The rebuke of Durban comes as uncertainty looms over the deal. Musk tweeted on May 13 that the Twitter deal was “temporarily on hold” while he sought more information about the proportion of fake accounts on Twitter.
- Five Senators have demanded that the Biden administration turn over all internal records relating to the now mothballed Department of Homeland Security Disinformation Governance Board, dubbed the ‘Ministry of Truth’ by critics. The Senators sent a joint letter Monday to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas noting “We write to request immediate access to all records and communications related to the Department of Homeland Security’s new Disinformation Governance Board.” The letter further explained “We are therefore demanding transparency into the Department’s decision-making process so that we can learn why the Department ever thought creating a disinformation board would be a good idea.”
- Vietnamese hacker Ngo Minh Hieu made a fortune stealing the personal data of hundreds of millions of Americans. Now he has been recruited by his own authoritarian government to hunt, he says, the kind of cyber criminal he once used to be. After serving seven years in US prisons for stealing some 200 million Americans’ personal details, Hieu was sent back to Vietnam, which imposes some of the world’s strictest curbs on online freedom. “I fell to the bottom, now I am trying to climb up again,” the 32-year-old told AFP. Hieu says his new job involves educating Vietnamese citizens about the dangers of the same sort of hacking he perpetrated. Hieu in his 20s, he made $100,000 a month hacking and selling some 200 million US social security numbers.
- The Bukit Barisan Military Command (Kodam) 1 has detained five Army personnel after they were named as suspects in the case involving the illegal and fatal caging of people at the residence of the inactive regent of Langkat, North Sumatra. The cages were discovered in January, not long after the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) arrested then-regent Terbit for allegedly demanding kickbacks from private contractors in exchange for infrastructure projects. The KPK and the North Sumatra Police discovered two cages in Terbit’s house that held dozens of people believed to be trapped in forced labor on his oil palm plantation, and opened a separate investigation into the matter.
