- Archaeologists have unearthed several pieces of statues of ancient Egyptian royalty at a temple near Cairo, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced on Monday. Among them are parts of a statue of the Pharaoh Ramses II, Egypt’s most powerful and celebrated ruler, who reigned more than 3,000 years ago. The discoveries also include statues of Ramses IX, Horemheb, and Psamtik II, who reigned from 1126-1108 BC, 1323-1295 BC, and 595-589 BC, respectively. The depictions were unearthed during an excavation by Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities and the University of Leipzig Museum in Germany at an archaeological site near the Museum for the Cultural Heritage of Heliopolis, in Egypt’s Matareya region. The Egyptian team found several pieces of quartzite sarcophagi dating back to Horemheb’s reign, around 3,300 years ago. Another depicting King Psamtik II is made of greywacke stone.
- Two men have been sentenced to life in prison in India for a 2014 killing that was reportedly solved thanks in part to the dead woman’s pet parrot, which is believed to have witnessed the murder. Special Judge Mohammed Rashid sentenced Ashu Sharma and Ronnie Massey to life in prison plus a fine of 72,000 rupees ($874) on Thursday based on evidence collected after Sharma confessed to killing his aunt, Neelam Sharma, with the help of his friend. The pair entered the victim’s home in Agra on February 20, 2014, when her husband was away at a wedding with their children. They stabbed her 14 times and even stabbed her pet dog nine times, Neelam’s daughter Nivedita Sharma told India Today. Her father Vijay had even given his nephew 80,000 rupees ($972) toward an MBA degree. Vijay Sharma returned from the wedding to find his wife’s and her dog’s corpses and reportedly became “suspicious” after her pet parrot stopped eating, drinking, and talking. Believing the bird might have witnessed the murder, he read off a list of suspects in front of it. When he got to his nephew Ashu, the bird reacted strongly, screaming his name in horror – a behavior it allegedly repeated in front of police. They subsequently arrested Ashu, though the parrot was never presented as evidence during the prosecution due to a legal technicality.
- Russian President Vladimir Putin told Russia 24 TV on Saturday, he agrees with the conclusions made by veteran American journalist Seymour Hersh. The Russian leader then cited Hersh, calling him “an American journalist, who recently gained prominence in the world.” In February, Hersh published a bombshell report on the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines, accusing Washington of orchestrating the attack. The US has denied responsibility. In March, Hersh went on to claim that the CIA and Germany’s intelligence service, the BND, were tasked with covering up Washington’s involvement by providing an alternative story to the media.
- Polish households have been urged by the country’s national grid operator to refrain from using washing machines and electric heaters in the evenings, to avoid straining the power supply. PSE, a state-owned firm and sole operator of Poland’s national grid, has designated 6pm to 9pm “peak energy hours,” according to its website. To lessen the load, PSE’s site is asking households to switch off unnecessary lighting, reduce the temperature of electric heaters, and avoid the use of “energy-intensive devices” like washing machines, kettles, microwaves and ovens during these times.
- The Iranian Foreign Ministry has condemned France’s harsh response to pension reform protests, calling on Paris to “talk to its people and listen to their voices.” With violence in their own streets, French officials should avoid “preaching to others,” Tehran said. “We strongly condemn the crackdown on peaceful protests by the French people,” the ministry tweeted on Friday. “We call on the French government to respect human rights and avoid using force against its people who are pursuing their demands in a peaceful manner.” France has been rocked by protests since President Emmanuel Macron’s government bypassed parliament last week to pass a controversial pension reform bill. More than a million demonstrators took to the streets across the country on Thursday, and hundreds were arrested in Paris for lighting fires and clashing with riot police.
- The Vatican has returned three fragments of the Parthenon sculptures kept by the Vatican for centuries to Greece. The decision to return the 2,500-year-old marbles was announced by Pope Francis last year, who described the decision as a gesture of friendship. One of the fragments depicts the head of a boy, another the head of a horse, and the third the head of a bearded man.
- French President Emmanuel Macron has been criticised after he removed his watch during an interview about pension changes. Mr Macron’s representatives said the president took off the watch because it was “clinking on the table”. But his critics have claimed the watch shows he is out of touch with the public. Some wrongly claimed it was worth up to €80,000 ($86,000; £70,000), but the Élysée Palace said this was not correct.
- Combating disinformation has been elevated to a national security imperative under the Biden administration, as codified in its first-of-its-kind National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism, published in June 2021. That document calls for confronting long-term contributors to domestic terrorism. In connection therewith, it cites as a key priority “addressing the extreme polarization, fueled by a crisis of disinformation and misinformation often channeled through social media platforms, which can tear Americans apart and lead some to violence.” Media literacy specifically is seen as integral to this effort. The strategy adds that: “the Department of Homeland Security and others are either currently funding and implementing or planning evidence–based digital programming, including enhancing media literacy and critical thinking skills, as a mechanism for strengthening user resilience to disinformation and misinformation online for domestic audiences.” ~ Ben Weingarten
- An investigation by Al Jazeera has revealed some of southern Africa’s largest gold-smuggling operations, exposing how these gangs help criminals around the world launder billions of dollars while aiding governments in circumventing international sanctions. ‘Gold Mafia’, a four-part series by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit (I-Unit) based on dozens of undercover operations spanning three continents and thousands of documents, also shows how government officials and businesspeople are profiting off the illegal movement of gold across borders. The investigation reveals how billions of dollars’ worth of gold is smuggled every month from Zimbabwe to Dubai, allowing criminals to whitewash dirty money through a web of shell companies, fake invoices and paid-off officials.
- Facebook and parent company Meta are well known for their practice of cloning features from competing services. Whether it is grabbing audio functions from Clubhouse or reproducing new apps entirely, there are few original ideas coming out of the company. Well, here is another one of those. The project is known internally as P92 and is supposed to be a standalone text-based app that supports ActivityPub. Which, if you are paying attention, is the technology that underpins Twitter rival Mastodon. The information on the P92 project turned up via an Indian website, MoneyControl. It was later confirmed by the company itself. A spokesperson said, “We’re exploring a standalone decentralised social network for sharing text updates. We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests.” Meta provided no further information, but the original report claims that the unnamed app will be supported by Instagram.

Planetary Parade
In late March, a stunning visual takes shape when five planets line up beneath the moon in a display sometimes called a planetary parade or alignment. Onlookers will be able to catch the best glimpse of the alignment – which will include Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Uranus – on Tuesday evening, just after sunset. Much of the display will become visible on Friday and will continue to be so over the next couple of weeks, according to Cameron Hummels, a computational astrophysicist at the California Institute of Technology.
