- India imposed tough new rules on social media platforms on Thursday (Feb 25) as it accused US tech giants of “double standards” in taking down disputed content. The regulations take effect in three months and will force social media, online streaming services and digital news services including Facebook and Twitter to remove content within 24 hours of a complaint being made. Tech companies will also have to disclose the origin of a “mischievous tweet or message” if asked by an Indian court or the government. Information technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad justified the move by comparing Twitter’s refusal to take down content after protesting farmers went on a rampage in New Delhi in January to its actions after violence at the US Congress days earlier.
- Animal rights activists are up in arms after Canadian companies last year bought 1,000 monkeys for the purpose of scientific experimentation from Cambodian suppliers, saying their nation should not be supporting potentially notoriously inhumane breeders.
- India and Pakistan said on Thursday they have agreed to “strict observance of all agreements, understandings and cease firing along the Line of Control (LoC) and all other sectors” with effect from midnight of February 24/25.
- Facebook announced on Thursday that it is removing all remaining Myanmar military and military-controlled pages from its site and from Instagram, which it also owns. It said it will also block advertising from military-linked businesses.
- The International Air Transport Association (IATA) just wrapped up a media briefing around 0830 ET Wednesday. The big takeaway from the world’s airlines’ trade association is that air travel trends in the first half of 2021 will be weaker than initially forecasted from December. IATA said booking remains stubbornly “weak” for the summer period. The association is very concerned that only 7% of summer travel bookings have been set, indicating that global travel and tourism will continue to remain weak in the coming months. Even with a vaccine rollout, the airline industry has yet to experience a “V-shaped” recovery.
- Dozens of tons of fresh tar lumps began landing on Israeli beaches in Habonim, Maagan Michael, and Neve Yam on Wednesday, February 17, 2021. On Sunday, February 21, Israel’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MoEP) warned people to refrain from going to beaches from Rosh Hanikra, in the north, down to Zikim Beach in the Hof Ashkelon Coastal Council, until further notice. It’s still unclear what the source of the tar is, landing on the beaches since Wednesday morning, authorities said. Tar is a product of the decomposition and crystallization of oils and oil products. This is usually the result of the illegal dumping of oil into the sea from a passing ship. “The source is not known, but it should be noted that if it’s from the dumping of oil from a ship, it may have traveled a great distance,” MoEP said. “The disaster we are witnessing in recent days on the beaches of Israel is the most serious ecological disaster in recent years, and we’ll see its consequences in years ahead,” the country’s Nature and Parks association said.
- Roughly three dozen House Democrats have asked President Joe Biden to make an unprecedented move for the United States’ national security. The letter from legislators reportedly asked for the procedure surrounding access to nuclear codes and launching a nuclear attack on another country. A suggested alternative to having only the president give permission to launch a nuclear attack is to have both the vice president and speaker of the House agree with a launch order from the president.
