News Burst 25 September 2020 - You Tube

YouTube

YouTube is rolling out more artificial intelligence-powered technology to catch more videos that may require age restrictions, meaning more viewers will be asked to sign into their accounts to verify their age before watching.
As part of the changes, people watching YouTube videos embedded on third-party sites will be redirected to YouTube to sign in and verify their age. One of the biggest questions facing creators in YouTube’s Partner Program (those who are able to monetize their videos) is whether these moderation measures will have an effect on their moneymaking potential. YouTube’s team doesn’t believe so because the majority of the videos it anticipates will receive automatic age restrictions also likely violate the company’s advertiser-friendly guidelines. Basically, those videos would already have limited or no ads, according to YouTube.

News Burst 25 September 2020 - Barakah Nuclear Plant

United Arab Emirates

On 1 August 2020, the United Arab Emirates became the first Arab country to operate a nuclear power plant, when the first of four reactors at Barakah station achieved criticality. The project, which is set to be completed in 2021 and has already cost the Arab nation $24 billion, has drawn a great deal of criticism, primarily from neighbouring Qatar, which has been following the developments in the UAE with great concern. But for Qatar, the UAE’s decision to go nuclear rather than concentrate on wind and solar energy generation, which are cheaper and more accessible in the Gulf, has stirred allegations that Barakah plant could be more than just a plant being used for civilian purposes.
This undated photograph released by the United Arab Emirates’ state-run WAM news agency, shows the under-construction Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi’s Western desert.

UK

British undercover spies may soon be universally licensed to kill under updated laws expected to be unveiled soon, as they will provide them with legal protection to commit crimes, the Daily Telegraph reported, citing sources. The fresh legislative updates are expected to create a legal framework to authorise β€œnecessary and proportionate” crime by agents acting on behalf of a variety of public organisations which conduct clandestine investigations and other operations, including MI5.
β€œAll covert human intelligence complies with (the European Convention on Human Rights) and is necessary and proportionate.” The government is now scrambling to try to ensure that the implied power, which originally struck a raw nerve with human rights advocates, is turned into the type of legal protection the Security Service says it needs to freely conduct its undercover operations.

News Burst 25 September 2020 - Indian Farm

India

Farmers in India and opposition parties have been up in arms against two bills introduced by the federal government to bring farming into β€œa competitive pricing environment” and β€œmodern trading system”. Currently farm produce is given price protection by the federal government, called the Minimum Support Price (MSP), a price for crops that the government guarantees, at all costs and under all circumstances. An expert group under the federal government fixes the prices for 22 commodities twice a year.
Farmers fear once the new legislation comes into force, they would lose MSP protection and would be at the mercy of corporate traders.
As most farm produce is perishable and most farmers have no access to cold storage or can afford to hold back produce until they get a profitable price, they would be forced to sell their produce at the discretion of buyers.

Nordic Master in Friluftsliv Studies

Having sold us homewares with the idea of β€˜Hygge’ – scented candles and self-assembly furniture- without anyone outside Scandinavia even knowing what that means, we now have β€˜Friluftsliv’ as the reason to head outside as if it’s an amazing new discovery.
The expression literally translates as β€˜open-air living’, which would all be fine and dandy were we not faced with governments using Covid-19 to lock us all up in our homes and fine us if we don’t. In a nutshell, and without trying too hard to conjure up images of clear, icy waters lapping pine-trimmed shorelines as a log fire crackles drying wet, hand-knitted socks hanging from a branch, it’s simply about enjoying the great outdoors.

News Burst 25 September 2020 - Nikita Khrushchev Plane

Yakutia

Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s historic β€˜personal plane’ found at aviation graveyard in Arctic. Rusting Ilyushin Il-14P with tail number Π‘Π‘Π‘Π -61755 is located 61 years after his famous speech to the United Nations. The Kremlin leader’s former personal aircraft today languishes in an aircraft cemetery in Chersky, in Yakutia region. It was spotted by helicopter pilot and aviation enthusiast Timur Fatkulov, 33, who flies with Polar Airlines. He checked out the sighting with an anonymous aircraft historian who told him: ‘My father flew [the aircraft with tail number] 61755. It is a former private plane of [Nikita] Khrushchev, and he had recollections about it. ‘There was very unusual and very cool American navigation equipment on board for the time. ’In particular, the plane had (radio equipment) that could tune to five world radio stations, among them definitely Japan, Australia, NY, and after adjustment it provided current coordinates of the aircraft in flight, apparently, using the triangulation method.’
