- Eight-year-old Indian diamond heiress who became a nun. Religious scholars say the number of Jains renouncing the material world has been rising rapidly over the years, although cases involving children as young as Devanshi are uncommon. Last Wednesday’s ceremony in Surat city in the western state of Gujarat, where Devanshi took “diksha” — vows of renunciation — in the presence of senior Jain monks, was attended by tens of thousands. After the ceremony, she stood with other nuns, dressed in a white sari which also covered her shaved head. - Convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell claims her partner-in-crime and ex-boyfriend, Jeffrey Epstein, was murdered in his Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 while he was awaiting trial. In a jailhouse interview with Talk TV’s Jeremy Kyle Live, which aired on Monday, Maxwell stated that she didn’t believe the official narrative that the disgraced financier had committed suicide after he was found hanging in his cell just a month after his arrest. “I believe that he was murdered. I was shocked,” she said. She also refused to issue an apology to her victims, saying that “Epstein has died and they should take their disappointment and upset out on the authorities that allowed that to happen.”
- The Catholic Church is investigating allegations of a “sex party” that took place at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Newcastle while the rest of the UK was under strict lockdown rules, the Sunday Times reported. The probe is part of a wider Vatican inquiry into the diocese, involving multiple cases of sexual abuse. In a letter cited by the newspaper on Sunday, the Archbishop of Liverpool wrote that he had been asked by the Pope’s advisers to compile “an in-depth report” into events leading up to the resignation of Robert Byrne as the Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle in December.
- Ukrainian forces are storing Western-supplied missiles and artillery shells in nuclear power plants, Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Director Sergey Naryshkin said on Monday. He claimed that Kiev has been using the plants as cover for ammunition stockpiles. “There is credible information that Ukrainian troops are stockpiling the Western-supplied weapons and ammunition on the territory of nuclear power plants,” Naryshkin said, according to a statement on the intelligence service’s website. He added that the armaments include rockets for US-made HIMARS launchers and missiles used by foreign air defense systems, as well as “large-caliber artillery shells.” “They rely on the calculation that the Russian Armed Forces would not strike nuclear power plants because they realize the danger of a nuclear disaster,” the intelligence chief said.
- The Dutch government is set to stop production at the Groningen gas field later this year, the state secretary for extractive industries, Hans Vijlbrief, has told the Financial Times. The site is already producing only a fraction of its capacity, and it is “very dangerous” to keep operating it, according to the official. “We won’t open up more because of the safety issues…. I’m not going to do it because it means that you increase the chances of earthquakes, which I don’t want to be responsible for,” he told the news outlet. It’s very, very simple: everybody who has some knowledge of earthquake danger tells me that it’s really very dangerous to keep on producing [at Groningen]. I’m quite convinced it’s wise to close it down,” Vijlbrief continued.
- On November 30, the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), an elite military think tank, and lobby group, with deep ties to the UK government, published a landmark report entitled ‘Preliminary Lessons in Conventional Warfighting from Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine: February–July 2022’. While desperate to portray the operation as a failure, even the normally Russophobic RUSI can’t ignore Moscow’s total cyberwarfare dominance over Kiev. Buried in the document is a long section on the electronic warfare aspect of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. It found that within weeks of February 24, Moscow’s forces quickly established total dominance in this sphere by deploying extensive jamming infrastructure. Once achieved, Kiev’s most sophisticated cyber systems were not only totally confused, but absolutely crippled. Before the attack, Ukraine had for some years been receiving the best Western reconnaissance and strike drones – Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) – IMF debt could buy.
- Western countries are shooting themselves in the foot by confiscating Russian assets, billionaire businessman Vladimir Potanin believes. Following the launch of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine in February last year, multiple countries have frozen assets belonging both to the Russian state, and private companies and individuals to the tune of more than $300 billion. In an interview with Russian media outlet RBK published on Monday, Potanin, the largest shareholder of mining giant Nornickel, said: “The confiscation [of assets] is a covert or overt form of theft,” and destroys “the investment climate of the jurisdiction where this is happening.” Potanin noted that the countries comprising the ‘collective West’ had based their societies upon respect for private property.
- Mexico’s former head of public security, Genaro García Luna, has been accused of taking bribes from a major cartel and allowing the criminal group smuggle vast quantities of narcotics into the United States. Now facing charges in a US federal court, the allegations against Luna were first raised during the trial of notorious drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman. “The evidence will show that the defendant, the person who was supposed to be in charge of fighting the Sinaloa cartel, was actually its most valuable asset,” the prosecution said in its opening statement, adding “The defendant took millions of dollars of bribes again, again and again,” and “betrayed his country and ours.”
- The debate over the possible delivery of German Leopard 2 main battle tanks to Ukraine continues to escalate, with Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin barely concealing his disappointment at a press conference at Ramstein Air Base in southwestern Germany last week after failing to get Berlin to agree to hand the tanks over. Austin told reporters that Kiev has a shrinking “window of opportunity between now and spring” before it starts a fresh offensive, and needs to “pull together the right capabilities,” including tanks. Warsaw took the rhetoric up a notch on Monday, with Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk warning that Germany had found “itself in international isolation” over the tank issue.
- The short film “Haulout” by Russian directors Evgenia Arbugaeva and Maxim Arbugaev has been nominated for Best Documentary Short Film at the upcoming 95th Academy Awards in March, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science said on Tuesday. The documentary focuses on the effects of climate change in the Russian Arctic. The 95th Academy Awards will take place on March 12.
- The European Union welcomes the anti-corruption investigation underway in Ukraine against a number of officials, but expects more significant progress from Kiev on this issue, European Commission spokeswoman Ana Pisonero said on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, Ukrainian media said that several senior Ukrainian officials were dismissed amid allegations of corruption. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired Kyrylo Tymoshenko from his position as deputy head of the presidential office and Oleksiy Symonenko from his post as deputy prosecutor general. “We take note of the reports that the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine is investigating these cases,” Pisonero told a briefing.
- Seismologists have published a study in the journal Nature Geoscience revealing what they believe to be the reversal of the Earth’s inner core, which could potentially affect the Earth’s own rotation. In the study, researchers Xi Yang and Xiaodong Song of Peking University, believe the inner core has actually paused its rotation process after looking at data that measured changes in both the waveform and travel time of seismic waves since the 1960s. While reviewing data they found officials determined that seismic waves showed little activity for about a decade until 2009, when the “temporal changes in the waveform shape simultaneously and consistently disappeared,” suggesting it stopped rotating completely. Post 2009, the seismic changes further showed that those patterns predating the “pause” returned, but that the waves were crossing parts of the inner core, suggesting it was now rotating in the opposite direction. Song and Yang believe the inner core could oscillate with a roughly 70-year periodicity while switching directions every 35 years or so. Those oscillations, they think, could help explain 60 to 70 year variations in the length of Earth’s days.
- Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that Sweden should not count on Turkey’s support of their NATO membership bid in the wake of the recent Quran-burning incident in Stockholm. The trilateral talks between Turkey, Sweden and Finland regarding the NATO membership prospects of the latter two countries have been put on hold indefinitely at Ankara’s behest. This development occurred in the aftermath of an incident on Saturday when Rasmus Paludan, head of Danish right-wing party Stram Kurs (“Hard Line”) publicly burned a copy of the Quran in front of the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.
- Twitter stopped paying rent on its San Francisco headquarters at 1355 Market Street in December, a lawsuit filed by the property owner Sri Nine Market Square LLC has alleged. The suit claims that Twitter owes $6.78 for December and January rent on approximately 42,735 square meters of space over eight floors. It’s also stated that Sri Nine Market Square held a letter of credit for $3.6 million as security, which Twitter was required to increase to $10 million if there were a transfer in control. The transfer happened in October 2022, when Musk bought the company for $44 billion. Twitter reportedly argued it didn’t have to boost the line of credit. The property owner said it used the existing line of credit to cover the December rent and a portion of the January rent, thus lowering the credit line balance to $1.
- NASA is considering a faster way of traveling to Mars, which could take astronauts from Earth to the Red Planet in just 45 days. According to the agency’s statement, the idea behind the technology is Nuclear Thermal Propulsion or Nuclear Electric Propulsion. It is a new class of bimodal nuclear propulsion that uses a wave rotor topping cycle. NASA has stressed that this technology will revolutionize deep space exploration.
