- The United Nations torture prevention body has suspended its tour of Australian detention facilities, citing local authorities’ efforts to put roadblocks in its way, according to the organization’s statement released on Sunday. The UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) noted that its delegation “has been prevented from visiting several places where people are detained” while lamenting “difficulties in carrying out a full visit at other locations.” Inspectors were not given all the information and documentation they had requested, the organization stated. The SPT went on to accuse Australia of a “clear breach” of its obligations under the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT), adding that the inspection, which kicked off on October 16 and was supposed to run until October 27, was “compromised to such an extent that they had no other option but to suspend it”. Initially, the SPT sought to assess situation on the ground and “examine the existing protection measures against torture” and other cruel treatment.
- Elon Musk called the staff of the Washington Post “such hypocrites,” after the newspaper – which proclaims that “democracy dies in darkness” – ran a series of highly critical articles on him. One referred to the SpaceX CEO as a “security risk.” While it was Bloomberg that first reported the possibility that the federal government may investigate Musk’s companies after the billionaire made them “uncomfortable” with his remarks on Ukraine, the Washington Post fired off a salvo of fiercely critical articles on the SpaceX CEO on Saturday. One piece described how lawmakers in Washington allegedly consider Musk “too powerful and increasingly reckless,” partly over his since-abandoned demand that the government reimburse him for providing Starlink internet access to Ukraine for free. An op-ed suggested that Musk’s Twitter musings on resolving the Ukraine conflict peacefully should make him “a person of interest to security hawks,” and another opinion piece slammed the supposed lack of “discipline and respectability” in Musk’s personal life.
- A team of three researchers concluded that Sars-CoV-2 was nothing but a genetically modified virus, after comparing its genetic structure to that of “wild” and laboratory-borne viruses. Sars-CoV-2 literally has “fingerprints” of genetic manipulations, according to a preprint released by Valentin Bruttel of Germany’s Wuerzburg University, Alex Washburne of the US-based Selva Analytics research center and Antonius VanDongen of Duke University, also in the US. The paper published this week reported that the three scientists had found a recurring genetic structure element called a restriction site, which they describe as a sign of the virus’ genome having been “stitched” together.
- Moscow is likely to agree to extend the International Space Station (ISS) agreement until 2028, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said on Sunday. In the meantime, according to the official, Russia intends to focus on launching its own space facility. The extension would be negotiated with the national space agencies and governments that participate in the international project. In total, 14 countries are involved in the ISS, including Russia, the US, Japan, Canada, and a number of European nations. The operations of the space station are regulated by the 1998 ISS Intergovernmental Agreement, which provides for the use of the facility until the end of 2024. However, Manturov noted that NASA had shifted its official retirement date to 2030 and had asked its partners, including Russian space agency Roscosmos, to continue cooperation until then.
- On 27 April, ABC News reporter James Meek tweeted a single word – “facts” – above another Twitter post from a retired CIA officer, who stated that the 2014-2022 Ukrainian civil war was an eight-year “lab experiment” on Russia’s military “tactics, techniques, and procedures.” It added that US intelligence and “unconventional warfare” experts had “learned a shit ton.” It was the last time, to date, Meek posted on the social network. In fact, it seems it was the last time he did anything in public at all, both online and in-real-life. Rolling Stone has published an investigation into the veteran journalist’s vanishing act in the months since, revealing how just hours after that tweet was posted, a number of menacing vehicles blocked off roads around Meek’s apartment in Arlington, Virginia, then proceeded to raid the premises. Neighbors interviewed by the magazine recall a collection of police cruisers, official-looking cars with blacked-out windows, and even armored tactical vehicles frequently used by the FBI, which resemble tanks. Quick as a flash, their occupants exited and rushed into Meek’s apartment complex, “at least 10” of them being “heavily armed.” The raid was reportedly over very quickly, and Meek apparently didn’t leave the scene with the authorities. To this day, there is no indication of what if anything was seized or why it was conducted, and all records related to the case remain sealed, including the search warrant approved a day prior. While no charges have officially been filed, Meek has dropped off the face of the Earth, and his apartment has remained vacant ever since.
- The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) says it has successfully launched 36 OneWeb satellites into orbit using the LVM3 carrier rocket. The launch was carried out at 00:07 local time on Sunday (19:07 GMT on Saturday, October 22), from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. “LVM3 M2/OneWeb India-1 mission is completed successfully. All the 36 satellites have been placed into intended orbits,” ISRO said in a statement on social media after the launch. According to OneWeb, with this latest launch, the company has more than 70% of its planned Gen 1 low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation in orbit. The OneWeb satellites are designed to build a space-based communications system providing broadband Internet access to any location across the globe.
- Former US President Donald Trump hinted at his readiness to take part in the next US presidential election in 2024. Speaking at a rally in front of his supporters in Texas, Trump reiterated that the results of the 2020 presidential election were “rigged and stolen.” “I ran twice, I won twice. And I did much better the second time than I did the first. Getting million more votes in 2020 than I got in 2016, and, likewise, getting more votes than any sitting president in the history of our country by far. Now, in order to make our country successful and glorious again, i will probably have to do it again,” Trump said.
- A team of researchers in Norway has launched a project to study how living cells respond to deep cooling that may help treat trauma patients and perhaps even deal with neurodegenerative diseases, Phys.org has reported. In their study, researchers used a tiny nematode and cultured neurons that can help fight diseases, travel in space and even challenge death. According to the media outlet, researchers used a nematode called Caenorhabditis elegans, which is widely used in biological research, to further their goals. Having kept these tiny worms at 4 degrees Celsius and then measured their lifespan, the team determined that they lived a week longer than creatures cultivated under the normal temperature. “It looked like they were hibernating, and this is something that has not been described for this organism before,” Ciosk said. “We started looking at what happens in this organism and, while doing genetics on this model, we realized that there are certain manipulations we can do that make the survival of these animals in the cold even more effective.”
