  • The idea behind the Friendship Benches comes from Zimbabwean Psychiatry professor Dixon Chibanda. Chibanda’s project has offered mental health therapy since 2006 to compatriots across the country who cannot afford expensive treatments. Mental health sessions are carried out through lay health workers, colloquially referred to as “grandmothers”. Chibanda’s mental health project started with just 14 grandmothers in Zimbabwe’s oldest and poorest township, Mbare, and has now expanded to nearly 1,000 benches and over 1,500 grandmothers in different localities. The Friendship Benches have helped bridge a shortage of professional healthcare workers in Zimbabwe, which has only 14 psychiatrists, 150 clinical psychologists and less than 500 psychiatric nurses serving a population of 16 million people.

  • Chinese authorities imposed more restrictions to rein in a rapid rise in COVID infections, adding to investors’ worries about the economy just as fresh unrest at the world’s largest iPhone factory highlighted the social and financial toll of these curbs.

  • Short video platform TikTok said it was on high alert for content that violates its guidelines in Malaysia after authorities warned of a rise in ethnic tension on social media following an inconclusive general election.

  • A ‘COMPLETE CATASTROPHE’ has taken place in the German city of Manching, according to its mayor, Herbert Nerb. He was referring to the theft of a cache of 450 Celtic coins that was stolen from a museum there on Tuesday. According to the Guardian, that group is worth several million euros. To undertake the heist, the thieves cut off the museum’s telephone service and the internet connection, and broke into a showcase. Markus Blume , the minister of arts and sciences for the Bavaria region, did not mince words when he called the occurrence a “disaster.”

  • Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has challenged the election he lost last month to leftist rival Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, arguing votes from some machines should be “invalidated” in a complaint that election authorities met with initial skepticism.

  • The New York politician Carolyn Maloney, a Democratic Representative in the House, may have gotten herself into a good deal of trouble by allegedly seeking an invite to the Met Gala, Politico reports. Investigators with the House Ethics Committee have said that Maloney had called Emily Rafferty, a former president of the Metropolitan Museum of Art ’s board, to procure a seat at the closely watched party after being cut from its guest list in 2016. Maloney said she didn’t remember having done so. The committee also claimed to have found an email in which she sought entrée to the 2020 edition of the gala. “If Maloney solicited or accepted impermissible gifts, then she may have violated House rules, standards of conduct and federal law,” an official report said.

  • The United Kingdom’s top court ruled that the Scottish government cannot hold a second referendum on independence without approval from the British parliament, dealing a hammer blow to nationalists’ hopes of holding a vote next year.

  • Goldfish are normally big enough to live in a bowl in people’s homes. However, angler Andy Hackett managed to catch a much bigger version of the fairground prize favourite when he landed one of the world’s largest weighing more than 30kg (67 pounds, or five stone). The elusive fish, known as the Carrot after its orange colour, was landed at Bluewater Lakes in Champagne, France. It was put into the lake 20 years ago. It is a hybrid species of a leather carp and koi, and is thought to be the second largest of its type ever caught. He posed for a photos afterwards before releasing it back into the water.

  • Republicans have criticized Joe Biden for record numbers of migrants caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border during his presidency.

  • FTX was run as a “personal fiefdom” of former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, attorneys for the collapsed crypto exchange said in its first bankruptcy hearing as they detailed ongoing challenges such as hacks and substantial missing assets.

  • The Manto Depression Risk Calculator can estimate a person’s risk for developing depression in the next two years. Answer a few questions about current symptoms of depression and some other life functions and you will receive an estimate of your individual risk score. The information collected by the test is anonymous and cannot be traced back to any person.

  • Credit Suisse expects a pre-tax loss of up to $1.58 billion in its fourth quarter as it keeps bleeding cash, the Swiss bank said, shortly before shareholders approved a $4 billion capital hike.

  • “We’ve taken a major step back in time, beyond what we’d ever expected to be able to do with Hubble. We see GN-z11 at a time when the universe was only three percent of its current age,” observed Pascal Oesch at the University of Geneva and head of the Galaxy Build-Up at Cosmic Dawn team about the discovery of a 13.4 billion-years -old galaxy. It’s mind-boggling by comparison to think that Earth is only 4.5 billion years old. The discovery underscores Edwin Hubble’s observation that the history of astronomy is a history of receding horizons.
