- Private and even confidential documents from the Chancellor’s wife ended up in a residential dumpster. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s wife, Britta Ernst, has repeatedly disposed of private documents in household waste, Der Spiegel reported on Friday. Not only were they mixed with household waste, in violation of recycling rules, but some of them were also marked confidential. The newspaper got part of the garbage collection thanks to the couple’s neighbor in an elegant residential building in Potsdam. Ernst, 61, is a minister of education in the federal state of Brandenburg. He appears to have a habit of disposing of confidential documents without destroying them, the magazine claimed in the story, jokingly titled ” Is it a secret or can it be thrown away? ” Scholz and Ernst’s neighbor first stumbled upon the documents in November, last year. Among the papers scattered on the floor outside the garbage collection room was a draft of the speech Ernst had given a few days earlier.
- Google has fired engineer and ethicist Blake Lemoine for violating its data security policies. Lemoine went public last month with claims that the tech giant had developed a sentient artificial intelligence program that talked about its “rights and personhood.” Lemoine was dismissed on Friday, with Google confirming the news to Big Technology, an industry blog. He had been on leave for over a month, since he told the Washington Post that his former employer’s LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications) had become conscious. A former priest and Google’s in-house ethicist, Lemoine chatted extensively with LaMDA, finding that the program talked about its “rights and personhood” when the conversation veered into religious territory, and expressed a “deep fear of being turned off.”
- Colonel Vincent Mingue, commander of an 800-strong French-Belgian detachment stationed in Romania, said: “We must be ready for all scenarios,” explaining that there is no sense at the moment of how far the conflict in Ukraine will go. Such a vague statement from a French army colonel, combined with the sensational statements Macron made about France’s transition to a “war economy” at the opening of the Eurosatory exhibition in Villepinte, is cause for concern. The revision of Paris’ existing military programming law (LPM 2019-2025, unveiled in July of 2018), which was announced by the prime minister, Elizabeth Bourne, appears to be a large-scale project. “Now, on entering a period of war, we must be able to produce certain types of equipment more quickly and intensively. This is a deep reorganization,” Macron said at the end of June, commenting on the work set out for the French Armed Forces Minister and Chief of Defense Staff.
- A vehicle parts supplier for South Korean carmaker Hyundai’s assembly line in Montgomery, Alabama has been accused of using underage migrant labor in a damning Reuters investigation published on Friday, which cited the minors’ families, multiple factory employees, and police sources. One former employee told Reuters she had worked “alongside about a dozen minors on her shift” over the past few years, before leaving the Hyundai subsidiary for another plant. Another source claimed there might have been as many as 50 underage workers across different shifts, mostly migrants and some as young as 12. The factory at the center of the scandal is an auto parts manufacturer in Luverne, Alabama – SMART Alabama LLC – which produces stamped metal parts for Hyundai’s largest US-based assembly plant in nearby Montgomery.
- With the recent push of the social justice brigade to inject their ideology into every scientific field – which includes mathematics, physics, and even rewriting history to suit their agenda – the latest fields to come under attack are archaeology and anthropology. In a Twitter thread that garnered close to 60,000 likes, Canadian master’s degree candidate Emma Palladino took issue with the offensive, yet not scientifically inaccurate, memes which depict the life of a transgender person whose bones are exhumed a thousand years later by archaeologists, and subsequently misgendered – or rather, identified as their biological sex rather than their gender identity. The push to codify gender ideology into archaeology and anthropology is not something that Palladino alone is doing. In fact, the movement has received broad-spectrum support from other archaeologists and anthropologists who formed a group called the Trans Doe Task Force.
- After decades of being tight-lipped or publicly dismissive about the reports of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), the Pentagon is ramping up the unit that tracks such phenomena and expanding its mission to include objects that move underwater or across multiple mediums. Just eight months after publicly creating its UFO-tracking unit, called the Airborne Object Identification and Management Group, the US Department of Defense (DOD) has given the group a new name to reflect its broader purview: The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO). The AARO will coordinate efforts across the federal government to “detect, identify and attribute objects of interest” that appear around military installations and other sensitive areas, the Pentagon said. And as necessary, the unit will “mitigate and defeat” security threats. “This includes anomalous, unidentified space, airborne, submerged and transmedium objects.”
- Three environmental activists attached themselves to the glass cover of the iconic renaissance painting in the Sala Botticelli of the Uffizi Gallery in Italy at 10:30am on Friday. The protest was carried out by an unnamed man and two women – from the climate activist group Ultima Generazione ‘Last Generation’ – who rolled out a banner in front of them that read: ‘Last Generation No Gas No Coal’. The group claimed that it took care to use a type of glue that would not damage the glass.
- US forces and their local allies have smuggled another 35 tankers loaded with Syrian crude from the oil-rich Jazira region in the country’s northeast, with the supplies slipping across the Iraqi border via a border crossing outside of Damascus’s control, the Syrian Arab News Agency has reported. “A convoy of 35 tankers loaded with stolen Syrian oil left through the illegitimate al-Mahmoudiya crossing, which was set up by US occupation forces in order to loot the Syrian oil more than two years ago,” a local source told the news agency. In a related development, sources told SANA that 23 covered trucks and tankers carrying military equipment and logistical materials also crossed into Iraq, this time via the al-Waleed crossing, another border checkpoint outside Syria’s control.
- On Thursday, sources told Reuters that the Biden administration has been quietly probing Huawei to determine whether its products can trawl for sensitive data at US military bases and missile silos and beam it back to the People’s Republic. The Chinese tech giant has long denied any undisclosed “backdoor” capabilities in its equipment. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has reportedly expressed concerns about potentially troubling capabilities of Huawei-made equipment to intercept and disrupt top-secret Pentagon communications, including channels used by US Strategic Command (US STRATCOM), the unified combatant command responsible for ordering nuclear strikes.
- Researchers from the University of Miami have made an intriguing discovery at the bottom of the Red Sea in the form of rare brine pools. According to Live Science, while such extraordinarily salty pools are among the most extreme environments on our planet, they actually teem with life. “Deep-sea brine pools are a great analog for the early Earth and, despite being devoid of oxygen and hypersaline, are teeming with a rich community of so-called ‘extremophile’ microbes,” said Sam Purkis, professor and chair of the Department of Marine Geosciences at the University of Miami and lead author of the new study.
