  • Since the outbreak of the Black Lives Matter protests last year in response to claims of systemic racism and police brutality in the United Kingdom, the London authorities have put together a commission which is meant to review statues glorifying figures involved in the historical slave trade. Effigies of William Beckford and Sir John Cass will be removed from the City of London Corporation’s historic Guildhall headquarters, it has been decided by unanimous vote. The City Corporation will also establish a working group to consider what could replace the statues, and will also think about putting together a new memorial to the slave trade in London.

  • Dave Clark, the incoming CEO of Amazon’s retail unit, earlier offered US President Joe Biden the e-commerce giant’s β€˜operational reach’ in his much-touted 100-day mission to boost COVID-19 vaccination across the nation. Critics on both the left and the right of the political spectrum have wondered why the company seemed to have waited for Democrat Biden to take office before offering assistance to the federal government.

  • Following Brexit, London’s position as one of the world’s biggest financial hubs is hanging by a thread, European economic experts say, admitting however, that the City cannot be immediately replaced by any of the EU’s financial centres or a network of these hubs. On 1 January 2021 the City of London lost its blanket access to EU financial markets which is due to be replaced by the equivalence system, which envisages the bloc recognising Britain’s legal requirements for regulating services, even though they may not be exactly the same. Foreseeing potential post-Brexit disruptions over 7,500 finance jobs and a trillion pounds in assets left the UK by 1 October 2020 to continue serving their clients in Europe, Reuters reported, citing Ernst & Young LLP (UK).

  • A parliamentary standing committee on Information Technology (IT) summoned officials from social networking giants Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to discuss an array of concerns. he topic is of particular interest in India because in 2020 the micro-blogging site restricted the account of federal Home Minister Amit Shah for reasons that were unclear at the time. The minister has more than 24 million followers on Twitter. Focusing on Twitter, the Tharoor-led panel also wanted to discover why the site misrepresented the map of India, showing the geo-location of India’s Leh region in Ladakh as part of China.

  • A falling audience share poses a risk to the BBC’s licence fee income, a new report has found. The National Audit Office said viewing habits in recent years have “shifted dramatically” particularly among younger audiences, with a move away from watching television to streaming and online viewing on demand. The report found this has created “some uncertainty over the BBC’s financial future”. It states the BBC’s licence fee income fell by Β£310 million between 2017-18 and 2019-20, to Β£3.52 billion.

  • A 10-year-old Italian girl was declared brain dead by a Palermo hospital Thursday after taking the Blackout Challenge on TikTok. Her parents have OK’d donating the organs of the girl, who tied a belt around her throat to self-asphyxiate in the challenge on the popular social-media platform. She arrived at the hospital in cardiac arrest. Doctors said they did all they could to try and save her but she was too far gone. The Blackout Challenge, and a milder variant called the Passout Challenge, have been circulating on TikTok over the last year. Italy has also temporarily blocked access to the service for people who are unable to verify their age.

  • After only three days in office the Biden administration has disabled comments on all thirteen videos posted to the official White House YouTube channel, erasing thousands of comments in the process. The White House channel has been under relentless negative commentary from the American people to the point that downvotes were being manipulated to make the Biden videos appear more popular. While the downvotes still wildly exceed the upvotes, all commenting and live chats are now gone.

  • Avi Loeb, Harvard’s Department of Astronomy chair, believes the cigar-shaped blob was space trash dumped by extra-terrestrials over our planet. He laid out a case for why Oumuamua might be proof that life outside Earth exists. An additional blitz of force exhibited by the object, which he called an “excess push”, mimics those displayed by our own space tech, he said. “Some people say, ‘OK it’s not a comet, maybe it’s just a rock’,” Loeb continued. “But the problem is, about half a year later, it was reported that there was an excess push in addition to the force of gravity acting on it by the sun. “It exhibited some additional force. Usually that force comes from the rocket effect of the cometary tail, but there was no cometary tail. So the question was, what produces this excess push?” Loeb highlighted that another space object, this one discovered last year, exhibited a similar “excess push”. Called 2020-SO, it ended up being a rocket booster from a failed mission of lunar lander, Surveyor II that was launched in 1966. Loeb said that because 2020-SO was artificially made and had no cometary trail, it “provides evidence” that we can tell the difference between a rock and an object — like the rocket booster — that is pushed by sunlight. “To me, it demonstrated the case that perhaps ‘Oumuamua was artificial, definitely not made by us because it’s been only a few months close to us. We couldn’t even chase it with our best rockets.” Loeb added that it was on the “shinier end of all the objects we have seen from the solar system.”

  • Four people have been jailed for a total of 78 years for manslaughter after 39 Vietnamese migrants died in the back of a lorry trailer in Essex in October 2019. It came less than 20 years after an almost identical case at Dover. On 18 June 2000 a lorry, being driven by a Dutchman, was stopped at the port of Dover. Inside were the bodies of 58 Chinese migrants, who had suffocated. On 23 October 2019 another truck, this time driven by an Irishman, arrived at the port of Purfleet and within an hour the bodies of 39 Vietnamese migrants were found inside, having suffocated.

  • Cetaceans like dolphins and whales will no longer be kept in Canadian aquariums after the government passed a bill that prohibits their captivity. The bill, S-203, was first proposed in 2015, and it was finally passed after three years of intense legislative battles. With the bill in effect, Canada has taken another step towards becoming more environmentally responsible. Bill S-203 bans the breeding of dolphins and whales in captivity, and it amends the current criminal code to include this as a crime. This means that Canadian marine parks like Marineland can still keep any cetaceans currently under their care, but they cannot breed a new generation or capture more in the wild. The bill also prohibits the importing of cetacean sperm, tissues, or embryos. The goal is to slowly phase out the practice of keeping dolphins and whales in captivity, and the government wants to discourage any further practices of the sort. Activists are still lobbying for the transfer of the remaining 55 cetaceans in Marineland to an open-water sanctuary.
