  • An American government contract valued at over $700 million with an Arlington, Virginia-based government contractor saw the defendants employed as linguist recruiters for US military operations. Among other things, the defendants are charged with knowingly recruiting linguists who lacked minimum language skills in Dari or Pashto – the two languages of Afghanistan with official status.

  • While the first NATO nuclear submarines are set to dock soon outside the Norwegian city of Tromsø due to a contested recent agreement, the municipality has no plans for the mass evacuation of people in the event of a radioactive leak or other emergency, national broadcaster NRK reported. “As is said in the contingency plan, which will be ready 1 May, we lack the necessary training on everything in the plan, and we also lack the necessary equipment,” the director of Tromsø municipality, Stig Tore Johnsen, told NRK, admitting that the authorities don’t have what is needed if something goes wrong when the nuclear submarines arrive.

  • There has been a rise in shark sightings along the British coast recently, with some of the creatures being spotted in Cornwall, Plymouth and Devon, the Daily Star writes, citing Professor David Sims from the University of Southampton. Sims argues that reduced marine traffic amid the coronavirus lockdown could’ve caused the surge. Sims also explained that sharks are naturally sensitive to sound, including that generated by ships. So the silent periods likely had an impact on the recent shark expansion.

  • The EU is proposing to regulate AI and facial recognition in the interest of privacy, while pushing ahead with an intrusive scheme that would strongarm citizens into disclosing private medical data through digital certificates. This week, when logging into the French government’s TousAntiC-vid smartphone application, French citizens discovered a new feature had been quietly added: “My wallet: Your test certificates will be available here,” it reads.

  • A gender reveal party in New Hampshire ended with a bang after participants detonated a large cache of explosives that caused the surrounding area to violently shake. Some residents of Kingston said they suspected that an earthquake had occurred after the ground began to tremor on Tuesday evening, leading to property damage. But the real culprit was 80 pounds of Tannerite, an over-the-counter explosive target used for firearm practice, that had been detonated in a nearby quarry as part of a “gender reveal” celebration. “We heard this god-awful blast,” one local told the media, adding that the boom shook her whole porch and caused cracks in her home’s foundation. (For those curious, the baby was “revealed” to be a boy.)

  • A Japanese man who pretended to be in a serious relationship with 35 women, and lied to them about his birthday to get gifts, has been arrested in Japan. It was the women who united and exposed him, local media reports. Takashi Miyagawa, 39, a part-time worker from the Kansai region in southern Japan, is suspected of being in a relationship with 35 women at the same time and lying about his date of birth to defraud them. Police believe he managed to receive almost $1,000 worth of gifts such as clothes and money.

  • An Italian man, named Salvatore Scumace, who was supposed to work as a fire response officer at a public hospital has allegedly not been doing his job for a whopping 15 years in a row, while still receiving a salary. Over the 15 years, Scumace, who is now 67, has allegedly defrauded the hospital out of some 538,000 euros ($648,000) that he unduly received in salary. The Italian public sector is infamous for this type of scam, and it appears this particular case sets a new national record for length.

  • Canada – A father jailed for calling his transgender child, who was born female, his ‘daughter’ and speaking out against ‘her’ medical treatment. The man complained about doctors giving puberty blockers to the 14-year-old, and referred to the child with the pronouns ‘she’ and ‘her’, in defiance of a court order. He was sent to prison for six months for contempt of court. Previously, he had been prohibited from calling the teen his daughter and publicly referring to them with the pronouns ‘she’ and ‘her’. The child prefers the use of male pronouns. Another Canadian parent had said that, “it’s like being stuck behind plexiglass watching your children being tortured and unable to do anything.”

  • Amazon reportedly has plans for dozens of new Amazon Fresh supermarkets across the country that feature automated checkout technology and will entirely transform the supermarket industry. The Seattle-based e-commerce giant is quietly building a national grocery chain of at least 37 stores from Philadelphia to the Sacramento suburbs, with 12 stores in operation. Some of the Amazon Fresh supermarkets already employ fleets of smart grocery carts called “Dash Carts,” whose sensors and cameras add up purchases as shoppers walk the aisles. While the intelligent carts make shopping seamless, Amazon could be developing even more advanced automated checkout technology.

  • Ghislaine Maxwell is appeared before court for the first time Friday since she was arrested for allegedly procuring underage girls for her pedophile ex-lover Jeffrey Epstein. The British socialite, 59, will appear for her arraignment on two sex-trafficking charges that were added to her indictment last month. Maxwell had requested that her arraignment took place in person, The New York Post reports.

  • Speaking on Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that Tokyo can no longer pretend to be deaf and dumb over the issue of releasing its supposedly treated nuclear wastewater from the now-defunct Fukushima power plant into the ocean. The spokesman continued, saying Japan must not put its own private interests above international and public interests. “The disposal of nuclear contaminated water in Fukushima, it is definitely not Japan’s housework. If the nuclear sewage is not polluted, why doesn’t Japan keep it for itself?”

  • Montana has been accused of undermining America’s secular values after the state passed a bill that will allow people to object to government regulations on religious grounds.

  • Iowa corrections officials are monitoring 77 inmates at a maximum-security prison for adverse reactions after they were inadvertently given up to six times the normal dosage of the Pfizer-BioNTech CVD vac cine.

  • Russia’s electronic warfare specialists will practice creating ‘protection areas’ in the country’s airspace that could render foreign satellite navigation systems completely useless, disabling an enemy’s high-precision weapons. The system, known as Field-21, creates interference that disorients foreign satellite navigation systems, including the American GPS NAVSTAR.

Chernobyl

Thirty-five years after the world’s worst nuclear disaster—an anniversary commemorated in the ex-Soviet country on Monday—surging flora and fauna have taken over deserted tower blocks, shops and official buildings topped with communist icons. Ukrainian authorities say the area maybe not be fit for humans for 24,000 years, but three startled wild horses with rugged coats and rigid manes dart into the flourishing overgrowth of their unlikely nature reserve: the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

Due to coronavirus, shops across Kerala have been shut for over a month now. However, there was an unexpected visitor at a jewellery shop in Payyanur in Kerala’s northern Kannur district Sunday. The owner, Sajith, had opened his shop Sunday for the first time since the lockdown was imposed. Among some old things in his shop, he discovered a reticulated python curled up and about 20 eggs that it had laid. Sajith screamed and called the state forest department, who came and rescued the snake and eggs. It will remain in their protection until the eggs hatch. The snake is 3 metres in length and weighs 24 kg.

Classified sightings of alleged UFOs in Britain have finally been revealed thanks to a freedom of information request, years after the once specially set up UFO wing of the Royal Air Force was shut after 50 years, on the grounds that there was allegedly no evidence of a potential threat coming from outer space. The newly released records cited by the edition show the top UK hot spots – more than 56 places across England, as well as areas of Scotland, Wales, and even the Channel Islands – where unidentified flying objects were reported from 1959 to 2009. The files offer lengthy descriptions of the alleged evidence of extra-terrestrials’ activity.
