  • The highly-discussed AUKUS pact between Washington, London and Canberra to arm Australia with a fleet of nuclear submarines is “reckless” and will only expose the country to danger on multiple fronts, Aussie trade unions said. China blamed Washington, London and Canberra for the “Cold War mentality” as AUKUS is widely seen as an attempt to counter Beijing’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific. Russia warned that the pact may well end up putting “the entire security architecture in Asia” under threat.

  • The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) spent £150,000 ($205,100) on retaining barristers for Assange’s extradition hearing in January. It spent another £22,000 ($30,000) on expert witnesses and a further £5,000 ($6,800) on transcripts, according to a report by investigative news outlet Declassified UK, which cited documents obtained through Freedom of Information requests. According to Declassified, the total costs of the courts, prosecutors and prison used for Assange’s extradition case has been estimated at £317,000 ($433,500). Under the 2003 US-UK Extradition Treaty, Washington does not have to foot the bill for any costs involved in extraditing someone from UK soil. It is only required to pay for the transatlantic flight and the “translation of extradition documents.”

  • Victoria police have opened fire with rubber bullets on demonstrators protesting Covid-19 vaccinations in the city of Melbourne in an attempt to disperse an angry mob, some of whom were decked out in body armor and helmets. On Wednesday, the third day of protests against a vaccine mandate for construction workers in the Australian city of Melbourne, hundreds of demonstrators made camp at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance.

  • Biden says US launching vaccine partnership with EU to expand global vaccination.

  • The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the fastest-growing federal agencies of recent decades. In 1987, their budget was $590 million but by 2020 it had ballooned to over $8 billion, leading journalist Eric Boehm to observe, “If the agency had grown with inflation since 1987, it would have a budget of about $1.3 billion today. Total federal spending, meanwhile, has grown from a hair over $1 trillion in 1987 to $4.4 trillion last year—which means that the CDC’s budget has grown faster [than] the government’s overall spending.”

  • The emails and WhatsApp messages of former British Health Secretary Matt Hancock can be searched, the High Court has ruled amid a court battle over the allegedly unlawful awarding of multi-million-pound Covid testing contracts. The search was ordered by the High Court on Tuesday during hearings of the case, brought by the Good Law Project group against the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). The case revolves around three Covid-19 antibody test contracts, worth more than £80 million, which were awarded to Abingdon Health. “The contracts were awarded directly, and secretly, without any advertisement or competition,” the barrister for the Good Law Project, Joseph Barrett, stated.

  • A new study recently published in the journal Nature Scientific Reports postulates that the ancient city of Tall el-Hammam, which thrived in the Jordan Valley over three and a half thousand years ago, was destroyed by a powerful “cosmic airburst” in about 1,650 BC. In their study, the researchers postulate that the “proposed airburst” was larger than the 1908 Tunguska event where a supposed bolide “detonated with 1000 more energy than the Hiroshima atomic bomb”. The scientists point to a “1.5-m-thick carbon-and-ash-rich destruction layer” at the archaeological site where the city once stood, with said layer apparently dating back to the period of time in question. “We saw evidence for temperatures greater than 2,000 degrees Celsius,” James Kennett, emeritus professor of Earth Science at UC Santa Barbara and one of the authors of the new research, said as quoted by SciTechDaily. The team also suggests that “it is worth speculating that a remarkable catastrophe, such as the destruction of Tall el-Hammam by a cosmic object, may have generated an oral tradition that, after being passed down through many generations, became the source of the written story of biblical Sodom in Genesis.”

  • Biden and British Prime Minister had a brief meeting at the White House on Tuesday, following the gathering at the UN General Assembly – and some of the topics that came up were pretty personal. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson during their bilateral meeting on Tuesday when he called Biden a “living deity on Amtrak” – the rail service which Biden used almost daily during his four decades in the US senate and Barack Obama administration.

  • Haitian migrants, part of a group of over 10,000 people staying in an encampment on the US side of the border, cross the Rio Grande river to get food and water in Mexico, after another crossing point was closed near the Acuna Del Rio International Bridge in Del Rio, Texas on 19 September 2021.

  • In the shadow of a humiliating exit from Afghanistan, a murderous drone strike in Kabul, and a diplomatic row with Paris, Joe Biden gave a speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday morning in New York. Biden reiterated US imperial rhetoric about leading the world against non-democratic nations.

  • Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had personally approved an initiative to use the platform’s News Feed to show people positive stories about the social network, reported The New York Times. The News Feed is the cascading screen of content that is seen when users log in. The initiative, code-named “Project Amplify,” presupposed pushing more pro-Facebook news stories, according to sources cited by the publication. The unveiled plan had purportedly “shocked” several executives at the internal meeting in January, as the idea of positioning the News Feed as a place for explicitly burnishing Facebook’s reputation was a novel one. Facebook has been plagued by bad publicity over privacy issues, misinformation and hate speech on its platform, with a recent series of stories by the Wall Street Journal reporting that while the social network is “riddled with flaws that cause harm, often in ways only the company fully understands”, it does little to fix them.

  • Tucker Carlson’s battle against compulsory CVD vacc took a new turn on Monday when he accused the US Army of being “sympathetic” to Satanism and trying to root out “free thinkers” over its new vaccination mandate. He said the Pentagon was on a mission to “separate the obedient from the free”. “The point of mandatory vaccination is to identify the sincere Christians in the ranks, the free thinkers, the men with high testosterone levels, and anyone else who doesn’t love Joe Biden and make them leave immediately,” Carlson raged during the Monday episode of his programme, proclaiming “It’s a takeover of the US military!” The Army announced last week that active-duty solders would have three months to get both doses of jabs to avoid penalties. According to the plan, 485,900 service members have to be fully inoculated by 15 December.

  • Natural gas prices are set to explode after Europe’s supply line has dwindled, with Britain set to warn its food industry to expect to pay FIVE TIMES more. The price surge has seen six energy firms go bust and a number of gas plants shut in recent weeks, although a three-week emergency deal has been struck with U.S. company CF Industries that supplies about 60% of Britain’s CO2. Ministers also claimed that meat and poultry processing industries were within days of suffering major shutdowns, as Iceland supermarket boss Richard Walker warned “a three-week deal won’t save Christmas.”

News Burst 23 September 2021 - Stone Bull Geoglyph

Geoglyph

The Stone Bull Geoglyph was part of an Early Bronze Era burial more than 4,000 years ago. The discovery was made close to the village of Khondergey in the south-west of the Republic of Tuva, close to Russia’s border with Mongolia. Only the backside of the bull with the hind legs and a tail was preserved, the front part was unwittingly destroyed in 1940s by road construction.
