  • Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh has claimed the US intentionally provided false stories to the media to cover up Washington’s involvement in the destruction of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 pipeline. In a post on his Substack blog on Wednesday, the veteran reporter claims the CIA was tasked with preparing a cover story – in collaboration with Berin’s BND intelligence service – to provide the American and German press with an “alternative version” of the Nord Stream 2 explosions. “In the words of the intelligence community, the agency was ‘to pulse the system’ in an effort to discount the claim that Biden had ordered the pipeline’s destruction,” Hersh wrote, citing an anonymous source with access to diplomatic intelligence. He noted that the CIA had completed its task and, with the help of Germany, planted stories in the New York Times and German weekly Die Zeit. These referred to a supposed “ad hoc ‘off the books’ operation” carried out by a “pro-Ukrainian group,” which allegedly used a luxury sailing yacht to plant explosives on the Nord Stream pipelines.

  • Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) gave his harshest rebuke of former president Donald Trump yet, assaulting Trump’s character and highlighting things he would have done differently. “Well, I think there’s a few things. The approach to covid was different. I would have fired somebody like Fauci. I think he got way too big for his britches, and I think he did a lot of damage,” DeSantis told tv host Piers Morgan in a recent interview that will air Thursday on Fox Nation. DeSantis added that George Washington “always put the Republic over his own personal interest.” He also responded to Trump’s nicknames for him – ‘Ron DeSanctimonious’ and ‘Meatball Ron.’ Of course, Trump is still leading in the polls, and Fox News hosts don’t seem very happy about it.

  • Trains in the southern Netherlands were halted on Tuesday afternoon after it was discovered that badgers had been digging under the tracks, jeopardizing passenger safety, the national operator ProRail announced. Badgers are a protected species in the Netherlands, meaning that rail operators need special permission to move or disturb their habitats. ProRail is now in the process of obtaining a permit to relocate the animals, but has complained that the application is taking too long.

  • Lawyers for distiller Jack Daniel’s will take on a pet accessory maker in the highest US court on Wednesday. The famous whiskey brand claims that the “Bad Spaniels Silly Squeaker” dog toy with its poop-themed jokes violates federal trademark law, according to an entry on the US Supreme Court website. The product in question, a squeaky toy by VIP Products LLC, bears a striking resemblance to Jack Daniel’s whiskey bottle, having virtually the same size, shape, a similar font style and a black label. Jack Daniel’s “Old No. 7 Brand Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey” inspired VIP Products to create “The Old No. 2 On Your Tennessee Carpet,” a euphemism for an animal pooping.

  • Elon Musk has proposed a solution to the current banking crisis in the US. The government must do away with the current $250,000 insurance cap on all deposits to stop panicking clients from withdrawing their money, the Tesla CEO wrote in a Twitter post on Tuesday. His comments come in response to a media report that US officials are studying ways to temporarily insure deposits beyond the current limit, without having to get approval from Congress. “Absolutely required to stop bank runs,” Musk wrote. The banking crisis began in the US earlier this month with the sudden collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), a major US lender focused on the tech and startup sectors. Over 92% of deposits in the bank were uninsured and the lender was shut down by regulators after massive deposit outflows. SVB’s failure caused the closure of another lender, Signature Bank. Panicked customers have withdrawn tens of billions of dollars in cash from the smaller banks and placed them with bigger lenders.

  • A US judge has cleared the way for three lawsuits against banking giants JP Morgan and Deutsche Bank, alleging both companies knowingly benefited from their relationships with convicted sex predator Jeffrey Epstein. Manhattan District Judge Jed Rakoff issued the four-page accusation on Tuesday, with a fuller statement to be published “in due course.” The first lawsuit against JP Morgan, filed by an unnamed “Jane Doe” representing a group of the pedophile’s victims, argues the US-based bank “knowingly benefited from participating in a sex trafficking venture” led by Epstein, who was a client there from 1998 through 2013, and “negligently failed to exercise reasonable care to prevent physical harm.” The US Virgin Islands’ own suit against JP Morgan alleges the bank enabled the late predator’s sex trafficking operation, though Judge Rakoff also threw out three of the four claims in that suit.

  • An earthquake in northeastern Afghanistan on Tuesday evening was felt all the way to New Delhi, with city residents in some parts of India and Pakistan fleeing their buildings in fear they might collapse. Initially reported as 7.7 in magnitude, the quake was later confirmed to be a 6.5, deep under the Badakhshan province. The US Geological Survey (USGS) pinpointed the quake’s epicenter as 187 kilometers (116 miles) under the surface, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south-southeast of Jurm in Afghanistan. The shaking reportedly went on for at least 30 seconds.

  • Russian billionaires should be removed from Western sanctions lists if they donate most of their wealth to Ukraine, former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul has suggested. He stressed that the idea is not supported by the Ukrainian government, to which he serves as an adviser. McFaul was speaking in an interview with Russian journalist Mikhail Zygar, former editor-in-chief of the self-exiled Dozhd (Rain) TV channel, during which he claimed that “all billionaires in Russia should be on the sanctions list.” The US and its allies have imposed personal sanctions on dozens of wealthy Russians, accusing them of having close ties to the Kremlin. The individuals face asset freezes, travel bans, and other restrictions. Instead of deciding on a case-by-case basis, McFaul argued that there should be blanket sanctions against wealthy Russians. However, the former diplomat proposed setting several conditions under which Russian billionaires could curry favour in the West.

  • The United Kingdom Ministry of Defense announced that it would be sending anti-tank ammunition for the Challenger 2 tanks being delivered to Ukraine that contain depleted uranium. According to the British MoD, depleted uranium, or DU, “is a standard component and has nothing to do with nuclear weapons,” adding that “The British Army has used DU in its armor piercing shells for decades,” the statement added. Moreover, the ministry stated, “Independent research by scientists from groups such as the Royal Society has assessed that any impact to personal health and the environment from the use of depleted uranium munitions is likely to be low,” declaring that “Russia knows this.”

  • The Military Observatory keeps the sad accounts of the crosses: 7600 Italian soldiers who fell ill with cancer due to the depleted uranium bullets used by NATO during the 1999 bombings in Yugoslavia and, of these, 400 died. Denial has always been the rule. The reports at the time read: the analyzes made it possible to confirm that the levels of radioactive pollution in the areas where our soldiers operate are below the safety limits set by Italian regulations for territory. [Obviously, all false ].

  • On Mar. 27, a planetary parade made up of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Mars and Uranus will march across the sky. At this particular time of the year, amateur astronomers are participating in the Messier Marathon. Originally conceived by the late comet hunter, Don Machholz, it takes place around the time of the new moon, and within a week or so of the Vernal Equinox. It is during this particular time of year, that all 110 of the various deep sky objects cataloged by the French astronomer, Charles Messier, come into view. Those with telescopes and a good knowledge of the sky, will stay up from dusk to dawn, looking for and logging as many Messier objects as they can. Sometimes, there are organized marathons scheduled, such as at the recent International Star Party in Flagstaff, Arizona.

  • A “hole” in the sun’s atmosphere may produce a dazzling light show on Earth in the coming days. A moderate aurora watch is in effect Friday (March 24) for higher latitudes of Earth due to a coronal hole, an opening in the sun’s magnetic field, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(opens in new tab) (NOAA). When these holes open in the corona, the sun’s upper atmosphere, they allow an increased flow of the charged-particle stream known as the solar wind. In similar situations, coronal holes have led to auroral displays as far south as New York and Idaho, according to spaceweather.com

Finland

It can get as low as -40c in Finland during the winter. The trees get covered in so much snow on frost, it ends up looking like a landscape on another planet. Photographer Niccolò Bonfadini captured the shots during his nine-day camping trip to Finland in January 2013.
