  • Video footage taken on Wednesday went viral today as viewers noticed that when President Joe Biden was walking into the Capitol on inauguration day, he robotically stated aloud β€œSalute the Marines” instead of actually saluting them. The awkward interaction appears to have been prompted by someone communicating with Biden via earpiece, which has become a staple of the 78-year-old Biden’s public appearances due to numerous gaffes and instances of erratic behavior. Biden clearly needed to be reminded to salute the Marines, as he did not end up doing so, but experts have surmised that the newly elected President is so used to repeating words and phrases given to him through an earpiece that he took the command β€œSalute the Marines” as a line to recite.

  • The data is the latest evidence at odds with President Biden receiving the most votes in any presidential election in U.S. history. At the time of publishing, of the seven videos uploaded to the account – which now has comments turned off – all have more dislikes than likes. In most cases, the like to dislike disparity is striking. The video β€œPresident Biden Reviews the Readiness of Military Troops in a Pass In Review” has 12,000 dislikes – nearly seven times the mere 1,800 likes the video garnered.

  • US tech giant Google and French publishers have inked an agreement aimed at facilitating digital copyright remunerations to pay publishers for their online content, it was reported on Thursday. The deal was struck between the Alliance De La Presse D’information GΓ©nΓ©rale (APIG), a French publishers’ organisation, and the California-based tech firm. The agreement would amount to “effective recognition of neighbouring rights for the press and the start of their remuneration by digital platforms for the use of their publications online,” APIG chief Pierre Louette said in a statement.

  • White House spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters that President Joe Biden has tasked the US intelligence agencies with preparing a thorough review of alleged activities undertaken by Russia. According to Psaki, these include reports of “Russian hackers” concerning the recent cyber attack against IT company SolarWinds. The cyberattack against SolarWinds exposed private data from companies and government agencies, including thousands of emails from the US Department of Justice (DoJ). Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov told Sputnik the United States is using the media to spread different versions of what caused the SolarWinds cyberattack, but it never showed any proof that Russia was complicit in it.
  • Twitter is being sued by a child pornography victim for refusing to remove images of him at 13 years old that were posted by predators who blackmailed him. Twitter allegedly told the victim that the child pornography did not violate the platform’s terms of service. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in California on Wednesday on behalf of the now 17-year-old from Florida, who is identified only as β€œJohn Doe.”

  • The president of the Vatican Tribunal Giuseppe Pignatone read the sentence which establishes that Angelo Caloia and Gabriele Liuzzo were sentenced to 8 years and 11 months in prison for the crimes of money laundering and aggravated embezzlement. Lamberto Liuzzo was sentenced to 5 years and two months; the three defendants were banned from public office in perpetuity. The court also ordered the confiscation of the sums already seized from the current accounts of the accused, and ordered compensation to the IOR and Sgir of around 23 million.

  • Facebook currently accounts for 94% of all online child abuse reports, according to the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Yet, the “social” media app has not been removed by Apple or Google from stores.

  • Twitter sued by survivor of child sexual exploitation. A minor boy and his mother are suing Twitter, alleging that it benefited from and neglected to remove an exploitative video featuring him and another minor which was retweeted thousands of times and at least 167,000 views on the platform. Announced on Wednesday, the federal lawsuit claims that the minor, John Doe, and his mother repeatedly contacted Twitter about the content, but the social media giant allegedly didn’t suspend accounts distributing it until a federal agent from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) intervened.

  • [Was it about a virus or the election?] Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser is lifting the ban on indoor dining for restaurants. Isn’t that great news? It’s probably just a coincidence that she is doing this two days after Joe Biden was sworn in as president.

  • Twitter suspends the account of Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei after posting a call for an attack on former President Trump.

  • In 1920, a farmer was plowing a field near Grootfontein, Namibia when his plow suddenly screeched to a halt. Curious about what he had run into, he dug in the soil to find a large piece of metal. The large metal mass quickly attracted the attention of scientists and others, who identified it as a meteorite and removed the soil around it. Although excavated, the meteorite has not been moved from its location of discovery because of its great weight. However, many pieces have been removed for scientific study and through vandalism. The farmer had discovered a 66-ton iron meteorite – the largest single meteorite ever found and the largest piece of iron ever found near Earth’s surface. It is tabular in shape and about nine feet long, nine feet wide and about three feet thick. It was given the name “Hoba” because it was discovered on a farm named “Hoba West.” Hoba is thought to have fallen to Earth about 80,000 years ago. It is composed of about 84% iron, 16% nickel, and trace amounts of cobalt and other metals. An abundance of iron oxides in the soil around the meteorite suggests that it was much larger than 66 tons when it landed and has suffered significant losses from oxidation. It is surprising that this meteorite is not surrounded by a crater. Objects of this size should punch through the atmosphere at a very high rate of speed and hit Earth with enough force to blast a significant crater. No crater is present around the site of the meteorite. This suggests that it fell to earth at a lower rate of speed than expected. Some scientists believe that the flat shape of the object may be responsible for its low velocity at impact. The Namibian government has declared the meteorite and the site where it rests as a national monument. The site now has a small tourist center and is visited by thousands of people each year.

  • A former FBI profiler recently took to NBC to complain that while Big Tech restricting Americans’ ability to freely communicate was all well and good, it was making it harder for the US intelligence apparatus to properly snoop on every aspect of these people’s lives.
