- A Christmas decoration manufacturer in the German state of Saxony may close down due to sanctions on Russian timber, newspaper Bild reported on Saturday. The company in question specializes in ‘schwibbogen’, traditional carved wooden arches with Christmas themes used as candleholders. According to the report, the company, which has produced these decorations for 30 years, has seen its warehouse stocks dwindle ever since the EU ban on Russian timber and wood products came into force earlier this year. The company’s owner, Katja Taulin, told the news outlet that while her company usually makes the decorations all year round, work is now carried out only by special order, and that she had to raise prices due to the lack of supplies.
- A wave of anti-French protests has recently swept Africa’s Sahel region, with many protesters expressing pro-Russian sentiments, as Paris begins to withdraw its troops after experiencing military setbacks in countering security threats. Over the weekend, Macron admitted that the French influence in the region has diminished. French President Emmanuel Macron has accused Russia of spreading disinformation to advance what he coined a “predatory project” in Africa. On the sidelines of a summit of French-speaking countries in Tunisia this weekend, Macron was asked by reporters to answer critics who say that France exploits historic ties with its former colonies in many spheres such as economics, politics, and culture, to protect and serve its own interests.
- Twitter has reinstated the account of Kanye “Ye” West, restoring the rapper’s voice on social media. The news came on Sunday, shortly after former US President Donald Trump was taken off the platform’s blacklist. West has nearly 32 million followers on Twitter. The rapper and fashion entrepreneur has been closely watched as a bellwether of how dramatically billionaire Elon Musk will transform the platform after acquiring the company for $44 billion last month. Musk has vowed to make Twitter a bastion of free speech, saying it was “important to the future of civilization” to have a digital town square where a wide range of beliefs could be discussed.

- An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) draft resolution censuring Iran will not stop the country from pursuing its nuclear goals, Mohammad Eslami, the head of the Tehran’s Atomic Energy Organization, has declared. The official commented on the matter on Sunday, referring to the UN watchdog’s stance on allegations that Iran is failing to cooperate with an investigation into traces of uranium said to be found on its soil. “The nuclear programs of the Islamic Republic of Iran are moving forward according to the strategic action plan of the parliament, and the issuance of multiple resolutions against Iran will not cause any disruption in the progress of these programs,” Eslami said during an event in Isfahan. He denounced the IAEA’s decision as a “wrong measure” and vowed a “firm response” to the agency’s hostility.
- Norway will give 2 billion kroner ($195 million) for Ukraine to buy gas during winter through the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Norwegian government said Monday. The Norwegian government called itself the second-largest donor to the EBRD’s work in Ukraine. Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt stated her opinion that Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure ahead of winter were aimed at breaking its “resistance.” “Norwegian support to secure energy supplies is therefore vitally important for Ukraine,” she added, as quoted in the same government statement.
- The UK is still receiving oil from Russia, even if official records suggest otherwise, an investigation published by The Sunday Times has suggested. According to the report, Britain discretely welcomed 39 tankers carrying £200 million worth of Russian oil (around $236 million) since the start of the special military op in Ukraine. The oil was classified as being imported from Poland, Belgium, the Netherlands and Latvia. Moreover, the UK received a total of £778 million (around $919 million) of oil from Russia in British ports since March, according to trade statistics. The newspaper reported it had tracked at least four vessels carrying around a million barrels of Russian oil to the port of Immingham.
- Germany will purportedly back future projects from the ArianeGroup – a joint aerospace venture of Airbus SE and Safran SA, media reports suggest, quoting sources familiar with the matter. The reported backing comes with the condition that the projects must be open to technology from European startups. The cooperation is yet to be officially confirmed but is seemingly aimed at the creation of the Ariane 7 launcher in direct competition with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and its Falcon 9 launch vehicle. According to analyst data, Musk’s Falcon 9 has accounted for 33% of all commercial space launches during 2022, while the French Ariane 5 rocket accounted only for 1%. The unveiling of Ariane 6 – designed to give Europe an upper hand in competition – has been delayed many times with its first blast-off now scheduled for the end of 2023.
- Scheduled Caste citizens are among India’s most disadvantaged socio-economic groups, and were long known as “the oppressed classes”, or “untouchables.” Over the years, however, many scheduled caste people have risen to occupy top positions in various walks of life in India. Upper caste villagers in India’s Karnataka state drained a water tank and ”purified” it with cow urine after a woman from the Dalit community (the lowest stratum of the castes) drank water from it, media reports said on Monday. In Hinduism, cows’ urine is used for purification during various religious rituals. The incident reportedly took place during a Dalit wedding in Heggotara Village in the state’s Chamarajnagar District, when a scheduled caste (SC) woman drank from a water tank. When some upper caste men noticed it, they scolded her. The next day, the locals came to empty the tank and ”clean” it with cow urine.
- A peculiar aerial phenomenon has been spotted recently in the sky above the Pribaikalsk National Park located near the coast of Lake Baikal in Russia. A photo taken by an environmental inspector working at the park shows a vaguely oval shape accompanied by a smoky trail of some sort.
- Egypt will begin construction of one of the world’s largest wind farms in 2024, said Mohamed Mansour, chairman of Infinity Power company that backs the project. The farm is expected to cost $11 billion. The construction of the 10-gigawatt wind farm, which could provide electricity to Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Libya and Europe, is expected to be completed by 2030. Mansour explained that the United Arab Emirates-owned Masdar and Egypt’s Infinity Power Holding are to be involved in the construction.
- NASA’s Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft zoomed just 80 miles (130 kilometers) above the lunar surface Monday (Nov. 21) at 7:44 a.m. ET. and completed an engine burn needed to continue its historic mission. NASA’s Artemis 1 mission fired its engines close to the moon today (Nov. 21), finishing the maneuver successfully out of communication with Earth. Artemis 1’s uncrewed Orion spacecraft has been cruising toward the moon since Wednesday morning (Nov. 16), when it launched atop NASA’s gigantic Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The burn “sent Orion close enough to the lunar surface to leverage the moon’s gravitational force, and swing the spacecraft once around the moon toward entry into a distant retrograde orbit,” NASA’s Sandra Jones said during an Artemis 1 livestream Monday (Nov. 21) at 8:28 a.m. EST, nearly an hour after the burn took place.
